A Study Of The Christian Public's Engagement With The New Geology Of The 19th Century And Its Implications For The Succeeding Centuries, Cornelis Bootsman, Kevin C. De Berg, Lynden Rogers Oct 2016

A Study Of The Christian Public's Engagement With The New Geology Of The 19th Century And Its Implications For The Succeeding Centuries, Cornelis Bootsman, Kevin C. De Berg, Lynden Rogers

Lynden Rogers

While Christian communities had no problem engaging positively with the sciences of astronomy, physics and chemistry, they had difficulty engaging with the emerging geology and biology of the 19th century. The ancient earth and evolutionary models of geology and biology respectively were seen as a direct attack on the biblical Genesis model of a young earth and a creation that took place over the period of a week. Some Christian apologists used Baconianism and the Scottish Common Sense philosophy to suggest that geology was not a real science. Geology was characterised as consisting of wild speculation, hypotheses and theories …

Biophysical And Hydrological Effects Of Future Climate Change Including Trends In Co2, In The St. Joseph River Watershed, Eastern Corn Belt, Ruoyu Wang

Ruoyu Wang

Future climate change has the potential to significantly impact crop growth, both directly due to CO2 enhancement and indirectly, through temperature and moisture impacts. This work investigates the biophysical and hydrological effects of future climate change, including trends in CO2, in the St. Joseph River watershed, Eastern Corn Belt. In this study, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was first modified to take dynamic CO2 concentration as input. A regional crop leaf development curve from Landsat TM imagery was also used to adjust model performance in corn leaf area development for the historical period. A multi-objective calibration strategy was …

The exchange of carbon dioxide is a key measure of ecosystem metabolism and a critical intersection between the terrestrial biosphere and the Earth’s climate. Despite the general agreement that the terrestrial ecosystems in North America provide a sizeable carbon sink, the size and distribution of the sink remain uncertain. We use a data-driven approach to upscale eddy covariance flux observations from towers to the continental scale by integrating flux observations, meteorology, stand age, aboveground biomass, and a proxy for canopy nitrogen concentrations from AmeriFlux and Fluxnet-Canada Research Network as well as a variety of satellite data streams from the MODIS sensors. …

Determining The Influence Of Emission Pathways On Outgoing Longwave Radiation Over Africa, Thomas Rechtman Aug 2016

Determining The Influence Of Emission Pathways On Outgoing Longwave Radiation Over Africa, Thomas Rechtman

Thomas Rechtman

The increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into the atmosphere has long been know for it effects on the climate. As of yet, the amount of longwave radiation leaving the top of the atmosphere - known as outgoing longwave radiation or OLR - has not been studied in the context of cli- mate change on a regional basis. Using the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) historical models and Representative Concentration Path- way (RCP) scenarios; along with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Ad- ministrations (NOAA) OLR satellite data, we determine if observed trends in OLR are forced by GHG emissions or …

The Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test: Should It Be Used In Iowa?, John E. Sawyer, Mohammod Ali Tabatabai

John E. Sawyer

The test was developed several years ago at the University of Illinois by researchers in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences. It is a laboratory procedure designed to measure N liberated from soil heated for 5 hours with dilute alkali solution (sodium hydroxide). The test does not measure nitrate, but does measure exchangeable ammonium and a fraction of soil organic N.

Interpreting P And K Soil Test Results, John E. Sawyer, Antonio P. Mallarino Jul 2016

Interpreting P And K Soil Test Results, John E. Sawyer, Antonio P. Mallarino

John E. Sawyer

Soil testing is a key component for determining the need for phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilization. Also, if fertilization is required, test results guide the rate of application recommended to optimize production. Through extensive field research, specific soil tests are calibrated against the expectation of response to applied P and K; that is, they provide both a relative index of the availability of P and K to the crop being grown and an indication of the magnitude of yield increase one might expect when nutrients are applied, thus providing the interpretation of text results.

Evaluation Of Fertilizer Additives For Enhanced Nitrogen Efficiency In Corn, Daniel W. Barker, John E. Sawyer, Michael J. Castellano Jul 2016

Evaluation Of Fertilizer Additives For Enhanced Nitrogen Efficiency In Corn, Daniel W. Barker, John E. Sawyer, Michael J. Castellano

John E. Sawyer

The use of N additives and slow release materials with ammoniacal fertilizer varies throughout the U.S. Corn Belt due to differing N loss potentials across climate, soils, and production systems. In Iowa, recent years of high rainfall events and prolonged wet soil conditions has renewed interest to protect fertilizer N loss from denitrification, leaching, and greenhouse gas emission with use of nitrification inhibitors. These loss processes can be significant in Iowa soils that are poorly drained and have high organic matter, high pH, and high populations of denitrifying bacteria. Subsurface tile drainage is also prevalent in farmer fields throughout the …

Drought Impacts On Soil Fertility Management, John E. Sawyer Jul 2016

Drought Impacts On Soil Fertility Management, John E. Sawyer

John E. Sawyer

If crop production was severely reduced because of dry conditions this year, there are a few items you can consider when planning for next year's crop. One, with severely damaged crops and low yields you might credit some of the phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) applied for this year's crop to next year, as much less removal will occur in grain harvest of the lower than expected yield.

Anhydrous Ammonia Application And Dry Soils, John E. Sawyer Jul 2016

Anhydrous Ammonia Application And Dry Soils, John E. Sawyer

John E. Sawyer

It is almost time that anhydrous ammonia (NH3) applications could begin (remember 50 F and cooling 4-inch soil temperature). However, many soils in Iowa are quite dry this fall. So, can anhydrous ammonia be applied to dry soil? Will it be held in dry soil?

Hornbrook Formation, Oregon And California: A Sedimentary Record Of The Late Cretaceous Sierran Magmatic Flare-Up Event, Kathleen D. Surpless Jul 2016

Hornbrook Formation, Oregon And California: A Sedimentary Record Of The Late Cretaceous Sierran Magmatic Flare-Up Event, Kathleen D. Surpless

Kathleen D. Surpless

Early Late Cretaceous time was characterized by a major magmatic flare-up event in the Sierra Nevada batholith and early phases of magmatism in the Idaho batholith, but the sedimentary record of this voluminous magmatism in the U.S. Cordillera is considerably less conspicuous. New detrital zircon U-Pb ages from the Hornbrook Formation in southern Oregon and northern California reveal a significant and sustained influx of 100–85 Ma detrital zircons into the broader Hornbrook region beginning ca. 90 Ma. Detrital zircon ages and hafnium isotopic compositions, combined with whole-rock geochemistry, suggest that sediment was largely derived from the Sierra Nevada, requiring uplift …

Exchange Flows In An Urban Water Body: Bayou St. John Responses To The Removal Of Flood Control Structures, Future Water Elevation Control, And Water Quality, Robin L. Schroeder Jul 2016

Exchange Flows In An Urban Water Body: Bayou St. John Responses To The Removal Of Flood Control Structures, Future Water Elevation Control, And Water Quality, Robin L. Schroeder

Robin S. Schroeder MD

Bayou St. John, an urban water body extending south from Lake Pontchartrain, has two anthropogenic structures that regulate flow from the Lake . The City of New Orleans has plans to remove the inner control structure to improve water quality. Field and numerical methods used in this study show removing this structure increased water elevations throughout the Bayou but resulted in lower water elevation signal amplitudes that caused a lower tidal flow exchange from north to south. Bulk Richardson numbers showed mixing was inversely related to flow and the Bayou generally remains stratified. Resuspension of contaminated sediment could negatively impact …

Three-Dimensional Geologic Modeling And Groundwater Flow Modeling Above A Co2 Sequestration Test Site, Eric Wade Peterson, David H. Malone

Eric Wade Peterson

As temperatures rise and climate change becomes an increasingly important issue, geologic carbondioxide (CO2) sequestration is a viable solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Subsurface3-D modeling and groundwater flow modeling were completed as a component of a CO2sequestration feasibility study in the city of Decatur, Illinois. The Decatur Archer Daniels MidlandCompany Ethanol Plant (ADM) serves as the injection site for a CO2 sequestration project within adeep saline reservoir. Petrel was successfully used to model the glacial deposits in the area. The3-D geologic model shows the Peoria Silt, Wedron Formation, and Cahokia Formation at the surface …

Three-Dimensional Geological Model Of Quaternary Sediments In Walworth County, Wisconsin, Usa, Jodi Jau, Jason F. Thomason, David H. Malone, Eric Wade Peterson

Eric Wade Peterson

A three-dimensional (3D) geologic model was developed for Quaternary deposits in
southern Walworth County, WI using Petrel, a software package primarily designed for use in
the energy industry. The purpose of this research was to better delineate and characterize theshallow glacial deposits, which include multiple shallow sand and gravel aquifers. The 3D modelof Walworth County was constructed using datasets such as the U.S. Geological Survey 30 mdigital elevation model (DEM) of land surface, published maps of the regional surficial geology andbedrock topography, and a database of water-well records. Using 3D visualization and interpretationtools, more than 1400 lithostratigraphic picks were …

Modeling The Sediment Fill Of The Uppertroy Pre-Glacial Bedrock Valley,Mchenry County, Llinois, Usa, Jodi Lau, Jason F. Thomason, David H. Malone, Eric Wade Peterson

Eric Wade Peterson

The Troy Bedrock Valley (TBV) and its tributary valleys are the principal pre-glacial drainage insouthern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, USA. This study focused on the headwaters of a tributarythat occurs in McHenry County, IL. Drilling, geophysical surveys, and the analysis of existinggeologic and water well data were used to determine the lithologic and geometric characteristicsof the sediments that fill the paleovalley. A 3D geologic model of these sediments was then developedin Petrel. More than 65 m of Quaternary sediments filled the paleovalley. The model domaincovers approximately 30 km2. The valley drains to the west and meanders, which is …

Effects Of Changes In Moisture Source And The Upstream Rainout On Stable Isotopes In Precipitation – A Case Study In Nanjing, Eastern China, Y. Tang, H. Pang, W. Zhang, Y. Li, Shuang-Ye Wu, S. Hou Apr 2016

Effects Of Changes In Moisture Source And The Upstream Rainout On Stable Isotopes In Precipitation – A Case Study In Nanjing, Eastern China, Y. Tang, H. Pang, W. Zhang, Y. Li, Shuang-Ye Wu, S. Hou

Shuang-ye Wu

In the Asian monsoon region, variations in the stable isotopic composition of speleothems have often been attributed to the "amount effect". However, an increasing number of studies suggest that the "amount effect" in local precipitation is insignificant or even non-existent. To explore this issue further, we examined the variability of daily stable isotopic composition (δ18O) in precipitation from September 2011 to November 2014 in Nanjing, eastern China. We found that intra-seasonal variations of δ18O during summer were not significantly correlated with local rainfall amount but could be linked to changes in the moisture source location and rainout processes in the …

Paleogeographic, Paleoceanographic, And Tectonic Controls On Early Late Ordovician Graptolite Diversity Patterns, Daniel Goldman, Shuang-Ye Wu Apr 2016

Paleogeographic, Paleoceanographic, And Tectonic Controls On Early Late Ordovician Graptolite Diversity Patterns, Daniel Goldman, Shuang-Ye Wu

Shuang-ye Wu

The Katian Age (early Late Ordovician) was a time of significant decline in marine biodiversity, but whether this decline was a real phenomenon or an artifact of the relatively few studies devoted to this interval requires further research. We examined the pattern of graptolite faunal changes across the boundary between the Climacograptus bicornis and Diplacanthograptus caudatus graptolite zones in North America and on several other continents.

A sharp decline in species diversity occurs in the Appalachian Basin. Scores for normalized diversity dropped from 20 in the C. bicornis Zone to 7 in the D. caudatus Zone. Only 11% of the …
