Archaeological And Geological Concepts On The Topic Of Ancient Mining, Prentiss De Jesus, Gonca Dardeni̇z

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Geological and archaeological research on ancient mining and metallurgy are actually targeting the same goals: understanding the nature and value of a mining operation. Geologists are intent on locating and qualifying ores and minerals for future use, whereas archaeologists strive to link ores to relevant historic and prehistoric metal artifacts and activities. This article discusses research into ancient Anatolian metallurgy by underscoring the overlap between geological and archeological practices. The work of archaeologists and geologists can be mutually beneficial through a close collaboration on the collection and analysis of field data. Their accumulated and combined knowledge would accelerate the progress …

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Biga Peninsula has many varied and interesting medical geologic problems, as well as being rich in natural geological resources. Mainly these problems are natural radioactivity, mineral dust, metal/mineral contamination in drinking water, acid rock/mine drainage, and problems related to geothermal and drinking water. With this view exposure to asbestos was surveyed and the results of this survey were evaluated by earth scientists and medical doctors. This inter-disciplinary study was done in Dumanl› village (Çanakkale-Turkey) in the Biga Peninsula, NW Turkey. Studies have been carried out in earth sciences and the health sciences simultaneously. The asbestiform minerals around Dumanl› village are …

Geochemistry Of Travertine Deposits In The Eastern Anatolia District: An Example Of The Karakoçan-Yoğunağaç (Elazığ) And Mazgirt-Dedebağ (Tunceli) Travertines, Turkey, Leyla Kalender, Özlem Özteki̇n Okan, Murat İnceöz, Bahatti̇n Çeti̇ndağ, Vesi̇le Yildirim Jan 2015

Geochemistry Of Travertine Deposits In The Eastern Anatolia District: An Example Of The Karakoçan-Yoğunağaç (Elazığ) And Mazgirt-Dedebağ (Tunceli) Travertines, Turkey, Leyla Kalender, Özlem Özteki̇n Okan, Murat İnceöz, Bahatti̇n Çeti̇ndağ, Vesi̇le Yildirim

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Karakoçan-Yoğunağaç (Elazığ) and Mazgirt-Dedebağ (Tunceli) travertines, which are related to thermal springs, are situated on the right-lateral strike-slip Karakoçan Fault Zone (KFZ) and left-lateral strike-slip Pamuklu Fault Zone (PFZ) in eastern Anatolia. The surface area of the travertines varies from m2 to km2. Morphologically, the travertines are classified as ridge, banded, and terrace types due to deposition in different ways, in the releasing/restraining bends of the KFZ and PFZ and on the segments of faults. The banded travertines were dated by U-series, and an age of 160,000 ± 76 years was determined in only one sample from the Mazgirt-Dedebağ …

Determining The Main Strand Of The Eskişehir Strike-Slip Fault Zone Using Subsidiary Structures And Seismicity: A Hypothesis Tested By Seismic Reflection Studies, Gürol Seyi̇toğlu, Gali̇p Berkan Ecevi̇toğlu, Bülent Kaypak, Yücel Güney, Muammer Tün, Korhan Esat, Uğur Avdan, Abi̇di̇n Temel, Alper Çabuk, Sevgi̇ Telsi̇z, Güzi̇n Gülsev Uyar Aldaş

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Eskişehir Fault Zone is one of the major neotectonic structures of Turkey, extending from İnegöl (Bursa) to Cihanbeyli (Konya). The fault zone presents a considerable seismic risk for the city of Eskişehir but the exact locations of active segments and the source of the major seismic event, the 1956 earthquake (M = 6.5) that occurred in the instrumental period (from 1900 to 2013), have been debated in recent literature. The structural data obtained from field studies indicate an approximately N60W-trending main strand of the right lateral strike-slip Eskişehir Fault Zone. This trend corresponds to the en echelon bends on …

Thuringian Affinity Of The Silurian?Lower Devonian Succession From The Eastern Taurus, Turkey, Valeri Sachanski, Hüseyi̇n Kozlu, Mehmet Cemal Göncüoğlu Jan 2015

Thuringian Affinity Of The Silurian?Lower Devonian Succession From The Eastern Taurus, Turkey, Valeri Sachanski, Hüseyi̇n Kozlu, Mehmet Cemal Göncüoğlu

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Silurian-Lower Devonian succession in the Değirmentaş-Halevikdere section (E Taurides) shows considerable lithostratigraphic similarities to the three-partite subdivision, initially documented in the same stratigraphic interval in Saxo-Thuringia and later in other peri-Gondwanan terrains. The Llandovery-Wenlockian part of the studied section (ca. 40 m) is characterized by black graptolitic shales. The Llandoverian part is dominated by radiolarian ribbon cherts (ca. 20 m). The Rhuddanian Akidograptus ascensus, Parakidograptus acuminatus, and Cystograptus vesiculosus biozones have been recognized in its lower part, while in the upper part of the succession, the lowermost Telychian Rastrites linnaei Biozone has been documented. The Telychian Spirograptus turriculatus and …

Petrography And Palynology Of Late Oligocene And Middle Miocene Coals In The Gelibolu Peninsula, Nw Turkey, Ferdi̇ Demi̇rtaş, Mustafa Bozcu, Erdal Koşun, Mehmet Serkan Akki̇raz Jan 2015

Petrography And Palynology Of Late Oligocene And Middle Miocene Coals In The Gelibolu Peninsula, Nw Turkey, Ferdi̇ Demi̇rtaş, Mustafa Bozcu, Erdal Koşun, Mehmet Serkan Akki̇raz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In this study, coal samples from two different coal zones located close to each other were examined. They occur in the Late Oligocene Osmancık and Miocene Gazhanedere formations in the Gelibolu peninsula, in the SW part of the Thrace Basin (NW Turkey). This paper focuses on the organic-petrographic composition and depositional conditions of the two coal zones by using coal petrography, including maceral ratios, and palynology. The maceral composition of the Oligocene coal samples is similar to that of the Miocene coal samples. The coal samples from both locations are characterized by a high content of huminite group macerals, ranging …
