Mineralogical And Paleobotanical Investigations Of Oligo-Miocene Petrified Wood Fromthe Southwest Of Thrace Basin (Nw Turkey), Burcu Üner, Sabah Yilmaz Şahi̇n, Ünal Akkemi̇k

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Petrified wood samples are found within terrestrial sediments belonging to the Late Oligocene-Early Miocene Danişmen Formation in Malkara-Keşan located in the southwest of the Thrace Basin. The petrified wood in both regions is usually silicified and partly coalified. The silicification of the Tertiary wood in the Malkara-Keşan region is associated with volcanic activity and coeval sedimentation. Thin sections from petrified wood samples were taken as transverse, tangential, and radial sections. The mineralogicalpetrographic- botanical studies were carried out under a polarizing and botanical microscope. Opal-moganite-chalcedony-quartz, which are different polymorphs of silica, were detected under the microscope in the petrified wood. Results …

Geochemistry And Petrography Of Beach Sands Along The Western Coast Of Ghana:Implications For Provenance And Tectonic Settings, Mahamuda Abu, Emmanuel Daanoba Sunkari

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The paleoweathering, provenance, and tectonic setting of sediments of the western coast of Ghana were unraveled using the geochemistry of 29 beach sands, which are characterized by coarse-, medium-, and fine-grained sizes. The coarse-grained beach sands contain higher SiO2 content (2.9-96 wt.%) than the medium-grained (4.9-94 wt.%) and fine-grained (16.1-90.7 wt.%) sands, implying that the increase in grain size is related to the increase in SiO2 content. Al2O3 and CaO concentrations are higher in the fine- and medium-grained sands than the coarse-grained sands. The beach sands are compositionally immature based on the index of compositional variable values (1.17-141) and Th/Sc …

Testing Of The Recently Developed Tectonomagmatic Discrimination Diagrams From Hydrothermally Altered Igneous Rocks Of 7 Geothermal Fields, Kailasa Pandarinath

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Recently developed multidimensional tectonomagmatic discrimination diagrams based on log-ratio variables of chemical elements, discordant outlier-free databases, and probability-based boundaries have been shown to work better than the earlier diagrams. Hydrothermally altered drilled well rock cuttings obtained from different depths of geothermal fields were used to test these diagrams to compare the inferred tectonic setting with the expected one. In spite of the hydrothermal alteration effects, these diagrams provided the following expected tectonic settings: (1) an arc setting for Ahuachapán and Berlin geothermal fields, El Salvador; (2) a rift setting for Cerro Prieto geothermal field, Mexico, and Tendaho geothermal field, Afar …

A Microscopic Approach To The Pedogenic Formation Of Palygorskite Associated With Quaternary Calcretes Of The Adana Area, Southern Turkey, Meryem Yeşi̇lot Kaplan, Muhsi̇n Eren, Selahatti̇n Kadi̇r, Seli̇m Kapur, Jennifer Huggett Jan 2014

A Microscopic Approach To The Pedogenic Formation Of Palygorskite Associated With Quaternary Calcretes Of The Adana Area, Southern Turkey, Meryem Yeşi̇lot Kaplan, Muhsi̇n Eren, Selahatti̇n Kadi̇r, Seli̇m Kapur, Jennifer Huggett

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Quaternary calcretes in the Adana area (southern Turkey) are widespread and occur in a variety of forms such as nodular, columnar/tubular, fracture-infill, laminated hardpan, and conglomeratic crusts. Palygorskite associated with calcrete nodules, tubes, and fracture-infills in the columnar horizon and adjacent host-rock mudstones suggests a cogenetic formation. The Beta-fabric (biogenic) constituents and stable isotope values of calcretes support a pedogenic origin for calcretes and also palygorskite. Extensions of palygorskite fibre and fibre bundles from euhedral to subhedral calcite crystals in calcretes and from smectite flakes in adjacent host-rock mudstone suggest an authigenic origin related to calcretisation in which precipitation and …

Magmatic Processes At The Volcanic Front Of Central Mexican Volcanic Belt: Sierra De Chichinautzin Volcanic Field (Mexico), Fernando Velasco-Tapia, Surendra Pal Verma

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Sierra de Chichinautzin (SCN) volcanic field is considered one of the key areas to understand the complex petrogenetic processes at the volcanic front of the Mexican Volcanic Belt (MVB). New as well as published major- and trace-element and Sr and Nd isotopic data are used to constrain the magma generation and evolution processes in the SCN. From inverse and direct modelling, combined ^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr and ^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd data, and use of multi-dimensional log-ratio discriminant function based diagrams and other geological and geophysical considerations, we infer that mafic magmas from the SCN were generated by partial melting of continental lithospheric mantle in …

The skarn and associated ore formations mainly occur at the contact between intrusive rocks of the Eğrigöz Plutonic Complex (EPC) and calcareous pelitic schists with limestone lenses of the Sarıcasu Formation and meta-carbonate rocks of the Arıkaya Formation. The major, trace, and rare earth element analysis of the igneous rocks indicate that they are high level, subalkaline, calc-alkaline, peraluminous to metaluminous I-type intrusions, generated in a continental arc setting. Three distinct skarn-type mineralization, differing in their host rocks and distance from the …

Genesis Of The Hydrothermal Karaçayır Kaolinite Deposit In Miocene Volcanics And Palaeozoic Metamorphic Rocks Of The Uşak-Güre Basin, Western Turkey, Selahatti̇n Kadi̇r, Hülya Erkoyun Jan 2013

Genesis Of The Hydrothermal Karaçayır Kaolinite Deposit In Miocene Volcanics And Palaeozoic Metamorphic Rocks Of The Uşak-Güre Basin, Western Turkey, Selahatti̇n Kadi̇r, Hülya Erkoyun

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Karaçayır kaolinite deposit, situated in the Uşak-Güre basin of western Turkey, is hosted by rhyolite and andesite of the Miocene Dikendere volcanics, and by muscovite schist, glaucophane schist, talc schist and chlorite schist of the Palaeozoic Eşme Formation. The association of kaolinization with silicification and Fe-oxidation, and the presence of pyrite, chalcopyrite and gypsum, suggest that hydrothermal alteration processes in the volcanics and schists were controlled by faults. Thus, prevalent kaolinite is associated with quartz, smectite, illite and opal-CT in the centre of the deposit, with relative increases in smectite, illite, chlorite and Fe (oxyhydr)oxide phases outwards and upwards. …

Volcanic Rocks From Foça-Karaburun And Ayvalik-Lesvos Grabens (Western Anatolia) And Their Petrogenetic-Geodynamic Significance, Samuele Agostini, Murat Tokçaer, Mehmet Yilmaz Savaşçin

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Foça-Karaburun and Ayvalık-Lesvos grabens (western coast of Anatolia, Turkey) are two important NW-SE-trending extensional areas generated in response to the Early Miocene-Holocene extension of the Western Anatolian region, related to the opening of the "unconventional" back-arc basin of the Aegean Sea. The abundance of geo-structural evidence and the occurrence of volcanic rocks representing all the stages of the Aegean-Western Anatolia volcanism render the Foça-Karaburun and Ayvalık-Lesvos Grabens key localities to exemplify the petrogenetic and geodynamic evolution of the area. In this context, the Foça-Karaburun and Ayvalık-Lesvos grabens, possibly formerly a single graben, formed along an original NE-SW-trending extension, later …

The Jajarm bauxite deposit, northeast Iran, is the largest such deposit in Iran. The deposit is sandwiched between the Triassic Elika formation and the Jurassic Shemshak formation, housed within karstic features developed within the former unit. The deposit generally shows an internal layering defined by the following four distinct horizons (from bottom to top): (a) a lower argillaceous horizon, approximately 50-80 cm thick, is mainly composed of clay minerals that directly overlies the carbonate footwall (Elika formation); (b) a bauxitic clay layer approximately 2-3 m thick that consists mainly of hematite, kaolinite, anatase, and diaspore; (c) a red bauxite layer …
