Modification Of Biomass-Derived Activated Carbon With Magnetic $\Alpha $-Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$ Nanoparticles For Co$_{2}$ And Ch$_{4}$ Adsorption, Çi̇sem Kirbiyik

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Magnetic and nonmagnetic activated carbons (ACs) were successfully prepared by using AC obtained from spent coffee grounds (SCGs) for use in CO$_{2}$ and CH$_{4}$ capture. SCGs were activated by chemical activation to produce ACs and a magnetic $\alpha $-Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$/AC composite was prepared by coprecipitation method from the ACs produced. Magnetic and nonmagnetic samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) techniques. The textural properties of samples were determined by nitrogen adsorption-desorption using the Brunauer--Emmett--Teller (BET) and Barrett--Joyner--Halenda (BJH) methods. The results showed that the porosity of …

Why Protein Conformers In Molecular Dynamics Simulations Differ From Their Crystal Structures: A Thermodynamic Insight, Fi̇li̇ppo Pullara, Mao Wenzhi, Mert Gür

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Conformers generally deviate structurally from their starting X-ray crystal structures early in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Studies have recognized such structural differences and attempted to provide an explanation for and justify the necessity of MD equilibrations. However, a detailed explanation based on fundamental physics and validation on a large ensemble of protein structures is still missing. Here we provide the first thermodynamic insights into the radically different thermodynamic conditions of crystallization solutions and conventional MD simulations. Crystallization solution conditions can lead to nonphysiologically high ion concentrations, low temperatures, and crystal packing with strong specific protein--protein interactions, not present under physiological …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Low-cost activated carbon (AC) samples obtained from waste coffee grounds were used for CO$_{2}$ and CH$_{4}$ adsorption. ACs were prepared by chemical activation and carbonized at three different temperatures. AC carbonized at 800 $^{\circ}$C showed a relatively high surface area (582.92 m$^{2}$ g$^{-1})$ and high adsorption capacities of 2.6 mmol g$^{-1}$ and 1.1 mmol g$^{-1}$ at 25 $^{\circ}$C for CO$_{2}$ and CH$_{4}$, respectively. Adsorbent samples were prepared by loading of Fe$^{3+}$ metal ions onto ACs and their adsorption capacities were compared with those of nonloaded ACs. As expected, the loading of Fe$^{3+}$ metal ions increased the adsorption capacities at all …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of The Antimycobacterial Activity Of 3-Mercapto-1,2,4-Triazole--Pyrrole Hybrids, Gheorghe Roman, Andra-Cristina Bostanaru, Valentin Nastasa, Mihai Mares

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A series of 3-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole--pyrrole hybrids was designed as antimycobacterial agents by employing 5-(4-(1$H$-pyrrol-1-yl)phenyl)-4$H$-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol as the scaffold onto which several types of moieties were introduced in the triazole ring at N-4 and N-2 and as substituents of the mercapto function. The aforementioned moieties are an allyl or a phenyl moiety at N-4; an aminomethyl group at N-2; or methyl, substituted benzyl, ethoxycarbonylmethyl, or substituted phenacyl at sulfur. Investigation of the compounds in the resulting library as growth inhibitors of Mycobacterium smegmatis showed that their minimum inhibitory concentration was higher than 64 mg/L.

A Case Study Of Antiaromaticity: Carbomethoxy Cyclopropenyl Anion, Zi̇kri̇ Altun, Erdi̇ Ata Bleda, Carl Trindle Jan 2019

A Case Study Of Antiaromaticity: Carbomethoxy Cyclopropenyl Anion, Zi̇kri̇ Altun, Erdi̇ Ata Bleda, Carl Trindle

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The simplest ideas of antiaromaticity refer to regular monocyclic systems and the eigenfunctions of the H\"{u}ckel Hamiltonian for 4n $\pi $ electrons in such systems. The antiaromaticity is expressed in the energy penalty for such idealized systems relative to the H\"{u}ckel energy for 2n noninteracting $\pi $ pairs. Observed systems seldom achieve the regular planar geometry assumed in this picture, owing to their ability to ease the antiaromaticity penalty by departures from the regular geometry and also by export of the 4n $\pi $ electrons' charge to substituents. In this report we estimate numerical values for the stabilization derived from …

Synthesis And Antitumor Activities Of 2-(Piperidin-4-Yl)-Thiazole-4-Carboxamides Analogues Of Tubulysins, Xiangfu Peng, Mingsha Shao, Shuchao Ma, Lei Yao

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

}Tubulysins are a family of natural products that exhibit potent antitumor activities, which have attracted much attention from synthetic and medicinal chemists. Previous attempts to aromatize the Tuv part of tubulysin analogues led to a loss in antitumor activity, which suggested that the Ile and Tuv fragments of these analogues were adopting different conformations than the natural products. In this study, a series of 2-(piperidin-4-yl)-thiazole-4-carboxamides have been prepared to investigate whether an intramolecular H-bond between key NH and OH groups is responsible for the conformational control. The antitumor activities of these analogues have been screened using MDA-MB-231-breast, Siha-cervical, MCF7-breast, and …

Effect Of Crosslinking Patterns On The Properties Of Conjugated Microporous Polymers, Hakan Bi̇ldi̇ri̇r

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Syntheses and detailed spectroscopic characterizations of two similar conjugated microporous polymers formed by A4 $+$ B2 and A2 $+$ B3 type functional monomers via Sonogashira--Hagihara polycondensation are presented in this report. The two porous polymeric networks possess mono-, di-, and tri- (1-, 1,4-, and 1,3,5-, respectively) substituted benzene rings and fused thiophenic moieties (dithienothiophenes). Because of the different conjugation patterns, their solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, and ultraviolet/visible light absorption analyses indicated significant differences. Besides the discussions on the porous properties of the obtained polymeric networks, the presented spectroscopic investigations can be useful for identifying the structure-property relationship of …

A Microwave-Assisted Highly Stereoselective One-Pot Wittig Reaction Under Solvent-Free Conditions, Kalyani Rajkumari, Bittu Lama, Lalthazuala Rokhum

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

We report a novel microwave-assisted two-step, one-pot protocol for the synthesis of olefins (alkenes) via Wittig reaction. The reaction was carried out under solvent-free conditions using basic alumina both as a heterogeneous catalyst and a solid support. Varieties of aromatic aldehydes were converted into their corresponding olefins within 30-50 min with good to excellent yields. An excellent predominance of E-isomers over Z-isomers (up to 100% E-selectivity) for all the olefin products was observed. This showed the attractive stereocontrol of our reported protocol. In addition, owing to the solid-state nature of the reactions, our procedure prevented the need for tedious aqueous …

Curcuminoids, reported to have important biological properties, such as antioxidant, anti-Alzheimer, and antidiabetic properties, comprise curcumin (CRM; 1,7-bis [4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione) and its derivatives demethoxycurcumin (DMC; (E,6E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxy-cyclohexyl)-7-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dione) and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC; 1,7-bis[4-hydroxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione). Their electrochemical oxidations are thoroughly explored by applying cyclic and differential pulse voltammetric techniques. The dependence of current intensities and potentials on pH, concentration, scan rate, and nature of the buffer was investigated. The outcome is supported by density functional theory computations indicating the transfer of 4-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$, 6-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$, and 8-e$^{-}$/H$^{+}$ couples involved in the oxidation mechanisms of CRM, DMC, and BDMC, respectively, leading to the formation of the same oxidized product.

Synthesis Of Tetrakis Bromine Terminated Phthalocyanine And Its Methyl Methacrylate Polymers Via Atr, Tuba Çakir Çanak, Damla Yeşi̇ldağ, Ilgin Nar, Esi̇n Hamuryudan, İbrahi̇m Ersi̇n Serhatli

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A phthalocyanine (Pc) initiator, tetrakis(2-bromopropyloxyester)ethylthiophthalocyaninatozinc(II) (ZnPc-Br), was prepared and successfully applied to atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) for the first time. Bromine end groups of the synthesized Pc took part in the initiation of the MMA chain growth. Polymerization was demonstrated by monomodal molecular weight distribution of the synthesized polymers and their increasing molecular weight behavior with reaction time. UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence, and transmittance properties of the polymers were also examined. The results indicate that the ZnPc-Br-based initiator is potentially applicable in ATRP applied to MMA in order to obtain and develop functional acrylic materials.

Pore Length- And Ion Concentration-Dependent Ionic Current In Cylindrical Nanopores: An Atomistic Molecular Dynamics Study, Nazar İleri̇ Ercan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The sensing of individual molecules as they pass through nanopores under an external field is a popular research field. The approach is simply based on the detectable temporary blockades in the ionic current as the molecules pass through the nanopores. These signatures of the current have been shown to be a function of nanoparticle and nanopore size and geometry as well as the external electric field. However, models developed in this context fail to predict the experimentally observed behavior in technologically important shorter nanopores. Here we present atomistic molecular dynamics simulation results from colloidal nanoparticle translocation through mid-to-low aspect ratio …

The seaweeds Fucus serratus and Alaria esculenta, and a mixture of seaweeds, mainly consisting of Cystoseria sp$.$ and Laurencia sp$.$, were subjected to hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) in subcritical water at three different temperatures: 200, 225, and 250 $^{\circ}$C. Fuel characteristics and chemical properties of the derived hydrochars were determined using the standard fuel analysis and spectroscopic methods. The combustion behavior of seaweeds and hydrochars was examined via nonisothermal thermogravimetric analysis under air atmosphere. The seaweed-derived hydrochar yields were lower than those …

Zeolite Cs-ABW nanocatalyst has been hydrothermally synthesized without using any harmful organic template. The zeolite nanocrystal with very high solid yield (81.88%) can be obtained within 60 min and at 180 $^{\circ}$C (∼ 20 atm), conditions that are much faster and gentler than the existing synthesis methods. The orthorhombic Cs-ABW nanocrystals (mean size of 32 nm) have high aluminum content (Si/Al ratio $=$ 1.14) and possess high basicity. The nanocrystals also exhibit better catalytic activity than conventional homogeneous catalysts in the Henry (nitroaldol) reaction of benzaldehyde with nitroethane under microwave heating conditions. The nanocatalyst does not suffer from coking and …
