Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Bahçecik travertines, located in Gümüşhane (NE-Turkey) have been investigated for the first time using a multidisciplinary approach, which included sedimentological (lithofacies, depositional system), petrographic, radiometric 230Th dating, geochemical analysis (stable isotopes), palynomorphs and geophysics (GPR). A carbonate build-up, 12 m thick, was formed with some interruptions, through the middle Pleistocene period. For this study, two travertine sections (F and D) were extensively used to figure out palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic proxies. The main precipitation cycles, separated by palaeosol levels, have been described and interpreted from a sedimentological perspective. The carbonate deposits consist of shrubs, crystalline crust, reed, laminated (micritic), pisoids, …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In this study seasonal changes in the geochemical and stable isotope compositions of Hisaralan thermal waters in Simav Graben, western Turkey, were investigated with regards to a variety of mineral-water interactions and mixing processes. The Hisaralan and Emendere geothermal waters, with temperatures of up to 99 °C, were mostly of Na-HCO3 and Ca-HCO3 types. The δ18O and δ2H values of the Hisaralan waters ranged from -9.32‰ to -8.73‰ and -65.02‰ to -61.10‰, with maximum seasonal differences of 0.3‰ and 1.8‰. The Emendere waters were represented by a more positive range of δ2H values (-54.95‰ to -54.61‰), while their δ18O compositions …

Stable Carbon And Oxygen Isotopes As Environmental Indicators Of The Late Pleistocene Inel Arenoso, Sonora, Northwest Mexico, Victor Adrian Perez Crespo, Tamara Cruz Y Cruz, Alejandro Terrazas Mata, Pedro Morales Puente, Martha Benavente, Edith Cienfuegos-Alvrado, Francisco J. Otero Jan 2020

Stable Carbon And Oxygen Isotopes As Environmental Indicators Of The Late Pleistocene Inel Arenoso, Sonora, Northwest Mexico, Victor Adrian Perez Crespo, Tamara Cruz Y Cruz, Alejandro Terrazas Mata, Pedro Morales Puente, Martha Benavente, Edith Cienfuegos-Alvrado, Francisco J. Otero

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The paleoenvironment conditions that existed in the Late Pleistocene at the archaeological-paleontological site of El Arenoso, Sonora, NW Mexico, were inferred using the carbon and oxygen stable isotopes from one bison, one mammoth, and thirteen horses as well as the pedological characteristics and the carbon isotopes of calcium carbonates from paleosoil. The values δ13C of the bison (-1.4‰), the horses (-2.8‰), and the mammoth (-4.3‰) show that these animals fed mainly on C4 plants and carbon isotopic values from profile horizons of locality 4Bgk (-3.4‰), 3Ck (-3.4‰), and 2Bgk2 (-5.7‰) indicated the presence of C3/C4 vegetation mixed in El Arenoso. …

The Impact Of Eustasy, Tectonics, And Paleoclimate On The Dolomitization Of The Syn-Rift Neogene Carbonate Platforms In The Red Sea Coastal Area, Egypt, Abdallah Mohammed Hassan Jan 2017

The Impact Of Eustasy, Tectonics, And Paleoclimate On The Dolomitization Of The Syn-Rift Neogene Carbonate Platforms In The Red Sea Coastal Area, Egypt, Abdallah Mohammed Hassan

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

A very significant quantity of dolomites and dolomitic limestones of variable origins occurs in the syn-rift Neogene carbonate platforms of the NW Red Sea coast and the Gulf of Suez. These are more common in the Um Diheisi Member of the Ranga Formation (early Miocene), the Um Mahara Formation (middle Miocene), the Um Gheig Formation (late Miocene), and the Dashet El Dabaa Member of the Shagra Formation (Pliocene). Based on their stratigraphic distribution, petrography, and cathodoluminescent characteristics, as supported by geochemical data, syn-rift irregular morphotectonic relief, and the eustasy, four distinct types of dolomites have been identified and were interpreted …

Evaluation Of Hydrogeochemical And Isotopic Properties Of The Geothermal Waters In The East Of Mount Sabalan, Nw Iran, Rahim Masoumi, Ali Asghar Calagari, Kamal Siahcheshm, Soheil Porkhial Jan 2017

Evaluation Of Hydrogeochemical And Isotopic Properties Of The Geothermal Waters In The East Of Mount Sabalan, Nw Iran, Rahim Masoumi, Ali Asghar Calagari, Kamal Siahcheshm, Soheil Porkhial

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Mount Sabalan district is regarded as the best place to investigate geothermal activities in northwest Iran. Since the last episode of volcanic activity in the Plio-Quaternary time, hot springs and surficial steams as conspicuous manifestation of geothermal activities have appeared around the slopes of Mount Sabalan. The hot fluids circulating in this geothermal field contains anions chiefly of HCO3- and Cl-; however, SO42- content in some water samples is relatively high, imparting sulfate characteristics to such fluids. Geothermometric studies provided compelling evidence for estimation of the reservoir temperature (~150 °C) in the study areas. Thus, in this respect, the …

Geology, Mineralogy, Geochemistry, And Depositional Environment Of A Late Miocene/Pliocene Fluviolacustrine Succession, Cappadocian Volcanic Province, Central Anatolia, Turkey, Ersel Göz, Selahatti̇n Kadi̇r, Ali̇ Gürel, Muhsi̇n Eren

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This paper investigates the mineralogy, geochemistry, and depositional environment of Late Miocene/Pliocene fluviolacustrine deposits, including multiple ignimbrite levels and andesitic and basaltic lavas, within the Cappadocian Volcanic Province (CVP) of central Anatolia, Turkey. Palaeosols and calcretes formed within these terrestrial sedimentary rocks under near-surface or surface conditions. The palaeosols are composed predominantly of smectite ± illite with feldspar, quartz, calcite, opal-CT, and amphibole, and the calcretes mainly of calcite with minor feldspar, quartz, and accessory smectite ± palygorskite. The palygorskite occurs on and between the calcite crystals in the calcretes and at the edges of smectite flakes within the palaeosols, …

The Çankırı Basin, located in the northern part of the Central Anatolian Plateau, is a large Tertiary basin where thick Miocene to Quaternary continental sediments overlay the Cretaceous-Tertiary units. This investigation focuses on the Tuğlu Formation, an Upper Miocene succession mainly composed of dark grey silty and organic rich clays. The type section of Tuğlu has been sampled for an array of multidisciplinary analyses. The palaeontological proxies included ostracod, foraminifer, nannoplankton, pollen, molluscs, charophytes, small mammal assemblages, fish, and crab remains. The abiotic parameters studied were: palaeomagnetism and environmental magnetism, stable carbon and oxygen isotope ratios (on ostracods and bulk …

Stable Isotope-Based Reconstruction Of Oligo-Miocene Paleoenvironment And Paleohydrology Of Central Anatolian Lake Basins (Turkey), Tina Lüdecke, Tamás Mikes, Fuat Bora Rojay, Michael A. Cosca, Andreas Mulch

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Isotope geochemistry of lacustrine carbonate represents a powerful tool to reconstruct paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental conditions. Here, we present a comprehensive set of long-term oxygen (delta^{18}O) and carbon (delta^{13}C) stable isotope records from 5 Chattian to Burdigalian lacustrine sequences distributed over the Central Anatolian Plateau. Field relationships combined with stable isotope geochemistry indicate a relatively humid subtropic Late Oligocene climate with an environment characterized by large, temporally open freshwater lakes. Approximately during the middle Aquitanian, a 4%o-5%o increase in lake delta^{18}O values indicates changes in regional climate including more arid conditions and an increasing dominance of closed saline lake conditions in …

Palaeoenvironmental Investigation Of Sapropelic Sediments From The Marmara Sea: A Biostratigraphic Approach To Palaeoceanographic History During The Last Glacial-Holocene, Elmas Kirci Elmas, Oya Algan, İzver Özkar Öngen, Ulrich Struck, Alexander V. Altenbach, Eni̇s K. Sagular, Ati̇ke Nazi̇k

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

High-resolution micropalaeontological examination of two cores recovered from the Central Basin of the Marmara Sea distinguishes seven biostratigraphical zones within pre-sapropelic (Pr1 & 2 zones), sapropelic (Sap1 & 2 zones) and post-sapropelic (Po1-2-3 zones) sediments. The pre-sapropelic sediments at the basal section of the cores reflect the lake stage of the Marmara Sea when it was isolated both from the Black and Mediterranean seas. First colonization of foraminifers at about 11-10.4 ky BP indicate the beginning of marine conditions following the entry of Mediterranean waters through the Çanakkale Strait. Sapropelic sediments deposited at about 10.3-6.2 ky BP were associated with …
