Lasing Conditions Of Elemental Sulfur In A Gas Discharge, David E. Egbert Sep 1972

Lasing Conditions Of Elemental Sulfur In A Gas Discharge, David E. Egbert

Theses and Dissertations

The partial pressures from heated sulfur crystals and helium, and sulfur and nitrogen required for ionic sulfur laser action in a gas discharge were determined. Previous work with sulfur lasers is reviewed and population inversion mechanisms are presented for the ionic sulfur laser lines. Possible excitation mechanisms are presented for both electron and ion or atomic collision excitation. Transition diagrams for all the known ionic sulfur laser transitions and an approximate potential energy curve for the diatomic sulfur molecule are presented. Laser action was achieved only when a spark gap pulser was used with a laser tube especially designed to …

Enzymatic Synthesis Of Oligoribonucleotides Of Defined Base Sequence, Bronwyn Geraldine Hughes Jul 1972

Enzymatic Synthesis Of Oligoribonucleotides Of Defined Base Sequence, Bronwyn Geraldine Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

A possible method for the synthesis of ordered oligoribonucleotides involves primer-dependent polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPase) synthesis using the RNase A or T1 resistant N-cyclohexyl-N'-β(4-methylmorpholinium)ethylcarbodiimide chloride (CMC-Cl) derivatives of uridine or guanosine containing primers. Thus, CMC-UpA, CMC-GpA, CMC-UpCpC, CMC-GpApC, and ApApApApU-CMC were prepared and studied as primers for PNPase in 15 min 14C-ADP polymerization reactions and also in 6-10 hr synthesis reactions. The CMC-primers were not suitable primers for PNPase catalyzed synthesis reactions for either time. The PNPases used in such studies were contaminated with nuclease that showed the following order of susceptibility: UpA > CpC, GpA > ApU, ApA. Even a highly purified …

Synthesis And Metal Coordination Properties Of Some Cyclic Polyethers And Polythioethers, Barry Lant Haymore May 1972

Synthesis And Metal Coordination Properties Of Some Cyclic Polyethers And Polythioethers, Barry Lant Haymore

Theses and Dissertations

Thermodynamic values for cation-cyclic polyether interactions for several systems are reported and discussed in light of ligand geometry, cation selectivity, solvent effects, structure, stoichiometry and the nature of the coordinate bond. Cyclic polyethers are shown to be remarkably good ligands even in water and to have marked selectivity for d0, d10 and d10 s2 cations. Syntheses of one new cyclic polyether and several new mixed cyclic polyether-thioethers are reported. Cyclic chelates with smaller rings are shown to prefer smaller cations, but this selectivity is masked by the hydration energy of the cation. Except for thiophillic cations such as Hg2+ and …

A New Method For The Preparation Of Alkylnaphthyl Ethers And Sulfides, Edward Ying-Shih Chen May 1972

A New Method For The Preparation Of Alkylnaphthyl Ethers And Sulfides, Edward Ying-Shih Chen

Theses and Dissertations

The reaction of monohalonaphthalenes with metal alkoxides and mercaptides in a solvent mixture of the corresponding alcohol and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been studied. These reactions are convenient methods for the preparation of alkylnaphthyl ethers and sulfides. Only direct nucleophilic substitution was observed in the reactions of bromonaphthalenes with sodium methoxide and sodium nbutyl mercaptide. The reaction of fluoronaphthalene with potassium t-butoxide also proceeded by way of direct nucleophilic substitution rather than the 1,2-dehydronaphthalene intermediate as in the reactions of bromonaphthalene with potassium t-butoxide. The use of a base which is weaker than t-butoxide can change the apparent reaction mechanism …

Rhenium Catalyzed Hydrogenation Of Maleic Anhydride And Crotonaldehyde, William Russel Dixon May 1972

Rhenium Catalyzed Hydrogenation Of Maleic Anhydride And Crotonaldehyde, William Russel Dixon

Theses and Dissertations

The preparation of a number of supported rhenium catalysts is reported. The determination of their activity and selectivity and of optimal reaction parameters for the reduction of maleic anhydride and crotonaldehyde is reported. Optimal time of hydrogenation was chosen as one hour and pressures were chosen as 2000 psig for crotonaldehyde and 3000 psig for maleic anhydride. Quantitative reduction of maleic anhydride to tetrahydrofuran occurred at 275° with charcoal supported rhenium catalysts. Lower temperatures (ca. 200°) produce quantitative amounts of butyrolactone. Unsupported catalysts at low temperatures (100°) selectively reduce crotonaldehyde to crotyl alcohol, but at very low conversion rates. Temperatures …

Toward Hydrogen Bonds Of Predictable Geometry, Robert Shao-Chih Hsu May 1972

Toward Hydrogen Bonds Of Predictable Geometry, Robert Shao-Chih Hsu

Theses and Dissertations

A literature review on the geometry of hydrogen bonding showed that the geometry is often de-emphasized or even ignored, probably because of the inherent flexibility of many systems studied. Examination of molecular models suggested the geometrically constrained bicyclo [2, 2, 1] heptane system wherein hydrogen bond distances and angles might be more easily predicted. Dihydroboration-oxidation of norbornadiene was shown to yield exo, exo-2,5-norbornadiol, thus clarifying uncertainties in the literature. 2, 5-Norbornadiol was oxidized to the corresponding dione, heretofore inadequately characterized. Several derivatives of the dione were prepared, and spectral data were accumulated for the dione, its precursor, and its derivatives. …

Electrolytic Synthesis Of [Gamma]-Diketones, Leon F. Pahler May 1972

Electrolytic Synthesis Of [Gamma]-Diketones, Leon F. Pahler

Theses and Dissertations

Four γ-diketones were synthesized by using a modification of the Kolbe electrolytic condensation of β-ketocarboxylic acids. [--see equation in thesis--] The following γ-diketones were synthesized in moderate yields: 2,5-hexanedione, 4,7-decanedione, 2,2,7,7-tetramethyl- 3,6-octanedione, and 1,4-diphenyl-1,4-butanedione (34, 39, 23, and 27, respectively). However, attempted preparation of the following γ-diketones failed: 3,4-dimethyl- 2,5-hexanedione, 3,3,4,4-tetramethyl-2,5-hexanedione, and 1,4-di(2-thienyl)-1,4-butanedione. Attempts to electrolytically condense α-alkyl and α, α-dialkyl substituted monocarboxylic acids have been reported and all attempts have ended in failure; similarly, the attempts to synthesize 3,4-dimethyl and 3,3,4,4-tetramethyl- 2,5-hexanedione from 2-methyl and 2,2-dimethyl-3- oxobutanoic acid, respectively, failed. The preparation of 1,4-di(2-thienyl)-l,4-butanedione failed because the product or …

Enzymatic Synthesis Of Oligoribonucleotides Of Defined Base Sequence, Mark J. Rowe May 1972

Enzymatic Synthesis Of Oligoribonucleotides Of Defined Base Sequence, Mark J. Rowe

Theses and Dissertations

The synthetic reaction of ribonuclease T_1 has been studied as to its potential for the synthesis of oligoribonucleotides of defined base sequence. Conditions have been determined for maximum synthesis with respect to percentage incorporation of both guanosine 2',3'-cyclic phosphate (donor), and cytidine (acceptor). With regard to maximum acceptor incorporation, a donor blocked at the 5'-hydroxyl has been used to drive the reaction. It has also been shown that acceptor incorporation decreases as the chain-length increases up to the hexanucleotide. Synthesis of a 3'-blocked substrate for polynucleotide phosphorylase for use in chain termination studies was attempted using adenylate kinase. In this …

Black Magnetic Spherules From The Glacial And Sea Ice Of Fletcher's Ice Island (T-3), Richard Scattolini

Theses and Dissertations

Black magnetic spherules are particles which can be derived by ablationary processes from cosmic sources. Spherules from both the glacial ice and sea ice of Fletcher's Ice Island (T-3) were studied to determine their size distribution, sedimentation rates, and other parameters. The results were examined and shown to be similar to those of other researchers' work elsewhere.

Calculated sedimentation rates for glacial ice spherules, extrapolated for the entire earth's surface, range from 1.1 x 10⁴ to 1.1 x 10⁵ metric tons per year. Calculated sedimentation rates for sea ice spherules range from 5.0 x 10³ to 1.6 x 10⁵ metric …

Applied Geology Of The Bismarck-Mandan Area, North Dakota, Gerald H. Groenewold Jan 1972

Applied Geology Of The Bismarck-Mandan Area, North Dakota, Gerald H. Groenewold

Theses and Dissertations

The Bismarck-Mandan area includes about 350 square miles located along both sides of' the Missouri River in south-central North Dakota. The area can be divided into two major physiographic divisions: the broad Missouri River floodplain and the nearly flat uplands which are dissected by minor streams. Geologic units in the area include Upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary sandstone, siltstone, and shale and Quaternary sand, silt, clay, and gravel.

Expansion of residential areas around the cities of Bismarck and Mandan results in conflicts in land-use between agricultural, urban, and resource development. This study consists of detailed geologic maps and a series …

Septic Tank Nutrients In Groundwater Entering Lake Sallie, Minnesota, David Robert Lee Jan 1972

Septic Tank Nutrients In Groundwater Entering Lake Sallie, Minnesota, David Robert Lee

Theses and Dissertations

The nutrient contribution of septic tanks to a lake was evaluated at Lake Sallie, in glacial outwash terrain of northwestern Minnesota. Groundwater entering the lake was collected by covering 0.258 m2 of lake bed with a bottomless cylinder vented to deflated plastic bag. Inflow velocity ranged from 0.01 to 2.5 micrometers per-second along 30% of the lakeshore. Groundwater inflow along an 800 m segment of shore amounted to 4.50 x 105 m3/year, and was uniformly distributed along the shore, but decreased exponentially away from shore.

Effluent from a heavily-used lakeside septic tank fanned out along the surface of the water …

Groundwater Of The Spiritwood Lake Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota, Frank J. Schulte Jan 1972

Groundwater Of The Spiritwood Lake Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota, Frank J. Schulte

Theses and Dissertations

The Spiritwood Lake study area is in a generally undulating to rolling glacial plain 17 miles north and east of Jamestown, North Dakota. Spiritwood Lake is about 50 feet below the surface of the bedrock plain in a former melt-water channel. In the study area, glacial drift unconformably overlies the Pierre Shale, the youngest pre-Pleistocene sediment. The boundary between the two units is marked by a zone of shattered Pierre Shale. The top of this shattered zone forms a plain of moderate relief which probably was the preglacial surface of the study area.

Two large valleys can be distinguished in …

Geology Of Southern Nelson County, North Dakota, Roger J. Reede Jan 1972

Geology Of Southern Nelson County, North Dakota, Roger J. Reede

Theses and Dissertations

Southern Nelson County occupies 576 square miles in northeastern North Dakota (Twps. 149-152 N., Rgs. 57-62 W.). Its surface is mantled with glacial drift resting unconformably on the Cretaceous Pierre Shale, which is exposed along the Sheyenne River Valley and the Stump Lake Basin. The entire mantle of glacial drift is part of the Coleharbor Formation, which, in southern Nelson County, averages 45 feet thick with a maximum thickness over 200 feet. Drill-hole data and missile site excavations provide good evidence for the existence of multiple drift sheets, including layers of till separated by more than 25 feet of outwash, …
