The Geography Of Open Dumps In Rural Appalachia, Bj Jones Jan 2008

The Geography Of Open Dumps In Rural Appalachia, Bj Jones

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The dumping of waste into the environment has plagued the mountains of Rural Appalachia for decades. Tire, cars, appliances, and drug producing materials routinely are illegally disposed of via open dumps. The purpose of this research is to reveal the motives of the damaging open dumpsites that damage the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains. The states of Kentucky and West Virginia were analyzed through the use of GIS and descriptive statistics. The distance to refuse centers and application of disposal fees are the leading factors that result to the use of open dumps.

Non-Preemptive Shunting In M/M/1 And Dynamic Service Queueing Systems, Steven Lacek Jan 2008

Non-Preemptive Shunting In M/M/1 And Dynamic Service Queueing Systems, Steven Lacek

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

We provide a study of two queueing systems, namely, an M/M/1 queueing system in which an incoming customer shunts, or skips line, and a dynamic server in an infinite capacity system moving among service nodes. In the former, we explore various aspects of the system, including waiting time, and the relationships between shunting and position in queue and rate of service. Through use of global balance equations, we find the probability that an arriving non-priority customer, finding customers waiting in the system, will shunt to a position other than behind the queue. In the latter, we explore a system in …

Not Your Father’S Border: An Examination Of The Border In Northern Ireland And Its Relevance To The Global Change In The Importance Of World Borders, Aaron Patterson Jan 2008

Not Your Father’S Border: An Examination Of The Border In Northern Ireland And Its Relevance To The Global Change In The Importance Of World Borders, Aaron Patterson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Humanity has long maintained barriers separating specific entities from others. Ranging from cultural, religious, financial, and racial differences among a few others, the reasoning behind borders has remained a purely human endeavor. But our current golden age of technology has somewhat shrunk, or at least reassessed the necessity for borders. The boundaries of today, while many remain in the same locations as in the past, are vastly different from the borders created by previous generations. Globalization, a relatively new term, has made communication simple and fast. The noticeable result has been, of course, better communication between locations, and thus easing …

A Study Of Present Value Maximization For The Monopolist Problem In Time Scales, Keshav Prasad Pokhrel Jan 2008

A Study Of Present Value Maximization For The Monopolist Problem In Time Scales, Keshav Prasad Pokhrel

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

There are some mathematical characters in the abstract that will not transfer. Refer to the download to read full abstract.

General results for time scales with right dense points are established. A study of issues that arise when unifying (C) and (D) is included in the analysis

A Continued Study Of The Use Of Created Ponds For Amphibian Breeding In Fragmented Forested Areas, Amy Elizabeth Schneider Jan 2008

A Continued Study Of The Use Of Created Ponds For Amphibian Breeding In Fragmented Forested Areas, Amy Elizabeth Schneider

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Amphibian populations are declining worldwide due to factors such as habitat degradation, fragmentation and destruction. I conducted a study to explore the use of created ponds in a forested habitat by breeding amphibians, specifically Rana sylvatica and Ambystoma maculatum. The objectives were to examine the movement of these animals after leaving the ponds, the survival and movement of juveniles, how both respond to fragmentation, and how similar the created ponds were to natural ones. Nine ponds were constructed in December 2003 in the MeadWestvaco Wildlife Ecosystem Research Forest (MWERF) in Randolph County, West Virginia. All trapped amphibians were measured and …

Residential Building Energy Consumption And Loss Reduction Methods, Edward J. Balthazar Jan 2008

Residential Building Energy Consumption And Loss Reduction Methods, Edward J. Balthazar

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Home energy costs can be a large monthly expense for many people. Reduction of home energy consumption has multiple benefits – personal cost reduction, increased comfort, and global stewardship. The author embarked on a multi-year series of projects to reduce energy losses. The projects include plugging air infiltration gaps, installing further insulation layers, and buying an energy efficient heat pump. Data for natural gas and electricity use and local weather are presented, with heating as the major energy use. A linear correlation between cold weather conditions and natural gas consumption, and a cyclical annual weather-energy algorithm were both developed. Conductive …

Mass Spectrometry Of Dendrimer Metal Complexes, Jason David Batchelor Jan 2008

Mass Spectrometry Of Dendrimer Metal Complexes, Jason David Batchelor

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Dendrimers are hyper-branched macromolecules with unique properties. They form using a “cascade-like” synthesis involving repetitive reaction steps. These steps are controlled, resulting in monodisperse dendrimers. Synthesis is divergent, core to exterior, or convergent, exterior to core. Dendrimers are created from various molecules with numerous functional properties. They are used as catalysts, diagnostic agents, and others.

This thesis studies 1st generation poly(propylene) imine, consisting of a diaminobutane core with 4 propyl amine branches. Fragmentation of protonated and metal (Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) complexed dendrimers was analyzed by ion-trap mass spectrometry. Two isotopically labeled dendrimers were synthesized for neutral loss identification …

Identification And Analysis Of Prohibitin In B16 Mouse Melanoma Cells, Christopher Francis Jan 2008

Identification And Analysis Of Prohibitin In B16 Mouse Melanoma Cells, Christopher Francis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Prohibitin, a highly conserved protein found in eukaryotic cells, has been found in recent years to possess a wide variety of functions in the cell. Whereas the mechanisms by which the protein functions are still largely unknown, it is clear that prohibitin possesses very strong anti-proliferative properties in the cell, as well as potentially both nuclear and mitochondrial functions based upon its movement and localization upon apoptotic signaling. Upon treatment with retinoic acid, transformed B16 mouse melanoma cells also indicate a differential expression of prohibitin in which production of the protein is increased. The purpose of this work was to …
