Quantum-Dot Mode-Locked Lasers With Optical Injection, Tatiana Habruseva Jan 2012

Quantum-Dot Mode-Locked Lasers With Optical Injection, Tatiana Habruseva

Theses

In this thesis novel stabilised ultra-fast pulse sources for a range of practical applications have been developed.

Semiconductor mode-locked lasers have much promise as sources of short, low- jitter, high repetition rate pulses. Development of stabilised semiconductor sources is in a great demand for applications, such as optical telecommunications, frequency metrology, optical sampling and clock recovery. Arbitrary waveform generation, wavelength-division and orthogonal-frequency-division multiplexing techniques need wide stable frequency combs with low phase noise. A low level of pulse-to-pulse timing fluctuations is essential for clock recovery, optical sampling and optical time- division multiplexing. Therefore, this work dealing with the development of …

Optically Injected And Mutually Coupled Frequency Distinct Semiconductor Lasers, Beatriz Baselga-Pascual Jan 2011

Optically Injected And Mutually Coupled Frequency Distinct Semiconductor Lasers, Beatriz Baselga-Pascual

Theses

In the following work we examine the dynamics of semiconductor lasers under different types of coupled oscillator configurations, namely optical injection and mutual coupling. We examine both discrete-mode quantum well lasers and distribute feedback quantum dot lasers. First we describe optical injection experiments carried out on single mode semiconductor lasers. Conventional diagnostic tools such as optical spectra, RF spectra and intensity time series are used to describe the dynamics. We also describe a novel interferometric technique used to experimentally resolve the phase of the slave laser. This new technique has proved successful, revealing some heretofore hidden dynamical features and showing …
