Tidal Sediment Yield Estimate Methodology In Virginia For The Chesapeake Bay Program Water Quality Model, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., Donna A. Milligan, Lyle M. Varnell, Julie Herman

Reports

Water quality in Chesapeake Bay has degraded over the past 50 years with respect to oxygen depletion and reduced light attenuation. While the causes are numerous, sediment resuspension from wave and tidal action cloud the water column and reduce light attenuation thereby negatively affecting submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) beds. Sediments on the Bay bottom come from upland runoff and shoreline erosion, each of which has significant contributions to the loading of sediments into estuary. The purpose of this report is to assess the present methods used to calculate sediment loading from tidal shoreline erosion that is input to the Chesapeake …

Supplemental Data: Effects Of Physical Mixing On The Attenuation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Estuarine Sediments., Krisa M. Arzayus, Rebecca M. Dickhut, Elizabeth A. Canuel

Reports

To examine the role of physical disturbance on the long-term preservation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments, cores were collected from two sites removed from point sources of PAHs and representing contrasting seabed mixing regimes. Although SPAH concentrations in sediments over the past 50 years were not significantly different between the two sites, several PAH isomer ratios were significantly different (p

The Effects Of Sewage Pollution Abatement On Environmental Quality In Hillsborough Bay, Florida, Joseph J. Simon, Wen H. Huang

Reports

Owing to the construction of a large municipal advanced (tertiary) waste water treatment (AWT) plant, a unique opportunity exists to study the side effects of removal of a major point source of pollution on the estuarine environment of Hillsborough Bay. The data is still in more or less raw form, with little analyses or interpretation attempted to date.
