The Geology Of The Eastern Half Of The Lake City Quadrangle, Anderson And Campbell Counties, Tennessee, Joseph B. Cathey Jr.
The Geology Of The Eastern Half Of The Lake City Quadrangle, Anderson And Campbell Counties, Tennessee, Joseph B. Cathey Jr.
Masters Theses
Preface:
The field work involved in the preparation of this thesis was begun in the fall of 1949 and completed during the summer of 1950. The writer used the geological folio of the area (Keith, 1897) to orient himself in general in the field. The geologic mapping was started in the eastern part of the quadrangle in the Valley and Ridge portion of the area and then continued westward into the Plateau portions. The final study resulted in both stratigraphic and structural modification of some of Keith's interpretations.
The writer gratefully acknowledges the counsel and assistance of Dr. Harry J. …

Statistical Analysis And Forecast Of The University Of Tennessee Enrollment, Edward J. Boling
Masters Theses
Statement of the Problem: It is the problem of this investigation to analyze by use of statistical methods the number of students enrolled at The University of Tennessee from 1899 to 1950, and with the aid of such analysis to forecast possible future enrollments.
The data used in this investigation will be limited in that only the resident students of that portion of The University of Tennessee which is located at Knoxville, Tennessee, will be used. Thus, the Colleges, Schools and Experiment Stations located in Memphis, Martin, Jackson, Columbia, Greeneville, Nashville, Crossville and Springfield, and the University extension work carried …
The Galois Group Of A Polynomial Equation With Coefficients In A Finite Field, Charles Leston Bradshaw
The Galois Group Of A Polynomial Equation With Coefficients In A Finite Field, Charles Leston Bradshaw
Masters Theses
Introduction [Abbreviated]:
The primary purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate a method for the determination of the Galois group of a polynomial equation with coefficients in a finite field. The problem of finding the Galois group of an arbitrary equation, where the coefficient field is either finite or infinite, is neither new nor unsolved.
Rhenium And Rhenium-Nickel Alloys As Hydrogenation Catalysts, Norma Connell Bowen
Rhenium And Rhenium-Nickel Alloys As Hydrogenation Catalysts, Norma Connell Bowen
Masters Theses
The use of the element rhenium and its compounds for catalytic work is suggested by the position of the metal in the periodic table. Very little experimental work has been done, however, in the field of rhenium catalysis. Compounds of rhenium, as well as the metallic form, both supported and unsupported have been tried for oxidation, dehydration, dehydrogenation and hydrogenations reactions.
Prime Ideals In Semigroups, Helen Bradley Grimble
Prime Ideals In Semigroups, Helen Bradley Grimble
Masters Theses
The concept of prime ideal, which arises in the theory of rings as a generalization of the concept of prime number in the ring of integers, plays a highly important role in that theory, as might be expected from the central position occupied by the primes in arithmetic. In the present paper, the concept is defined for ideals in semigroups, the simplest of the algebraic systems of single composition, and some analogies and differences between the ring and semigroup theories are brought out. We make only occasional references to ring theory, however; a reader acquainted with that theory will …
A Study Of The Retail And Wholesale Distribution Of Frozen Foods In Tennessee, John F. Boyd Iii
A Study Of The Retail And Wholesale Distribution Of Frozen Foods In Tennessee, John F. Boyd Iii
Masters Theses
[From the Introduction]
One of the most amazing stories to come from the foods business during the past decade is the growth of the frozen foods industry. Its rapid development, after having partially solved many perplexing problems of production and distribution, was somewhat accelerated by higher consumer incomes and wartime scarcities. Equally important is the fact that housewives have been relatively quick to adopt frozen foods. Therefore, today frozen foods are occupying an increasingly important position and the industry no longer considers itself as being in the "infant" stage of development.
The Determination Of The Solubility Of Hafnium Oxide In Aqueous Solution By The Radioactive Tracer Technique, Hampden O. Banks
The Determination Of The Solubility Of Hafnium Oxide In Aqueous Solution By The Radioactive Tracer Technique, Hampden O. Banks
Masters Theses
"To date, there is no information in the open literature concerning the solubility of hafnium oxide in water other than the fact that it is very insoluble. This lack of experimental information is due, partly, to the fact that hafnium is a relatively new addition to the list of known elements"--Introduction, page 1.
An Ecological Study Of The Foraminifera Of Mason Inlet, North Carolina, Daniel N. Miller Jr.
An Ecological Study Of The Foraminifera Of Mason Inlet, North Carolina, Daniel N. Miller Jr.
Masters Theses
"Mason Inlet. North Carolina is a lagoonal marsh area with warm-temperate water, the salinity ranging from fresh to salt water. Nine collecting stations comprise an ecological gradient across the environment.
Forty-two species of foraminifera are recorded from the inlet, ranging in their affinities from brackish water to open-sea facies. Several extensions of range are recorded both northward and southward.
Substratum conditions apparently control the distribution of foraminifera within the inlet. Clean, fine sand provided the largest faunal populations. A depauperate assemblage was found in an inorganic, argillaceous substratum. The largest population of arenaceous forms was found at the channel through …
The Energy Levels Of Potassium Chloride, Clifford L. Adams
The Energy Levels Of Potassium Chloride, Clifford L. Adams
Masters Theses
"An understanding of the electronic energy states of solids has long been considered of importance. And the energy levels of the alkali halides have been the subject of much study in recent years. The present work is an attempt to set up an energy-level diagram for potassium chloride"--Introduction, page 1.
The Theory Of The Specific Heat Of A Body Centered Cubic Lattice, Curtis Cleveland Webster
The Theory Of The Specific Heat Of A Body Centered Cubic Lattice, Curtis Cleveland Webster
Masters Theses
"In normal crystalline solids the atoms are at rest in their lattice points at absolute zero of temperature. Increasing the temperature of the crystal increases the motion of the atoms about their lattice points. Approximately, each atom or ion may be treated as a harmonic oscillator. then from the equations of motion of the atoms, by the Born-von Karman theory of specific heats, the normal modes of vibration of the lattice can be expressed as the roots of a secular determinant. Application of this theory to determine the thermodynamic properties of crystals has resulted either in solutions that are inaccurate …
The Theory Of The Specific Heat Of A Face-Centered Cubic Lattice, Charles Robert Bonnell
The Theory Of The Specific Heat Of A Face-Centered Cubic Lattice, Charles Robert Bonnell
Masters Theses
"It is generally accepted that a normal crystalline solid can be pictured at absolute zero as an assembly of atoms at rest arranged at periodic lattice points. Since at higher temperatures each molecule becomes a harmonic oscillator about its lattice point, it is necessary to know the distribution of normal modes of vibration in order to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the lattice...Many approaches have been made to get a simple solution of the problem, but either accuracy is sacrificed for simplicity, or the solutions demand a very considerable amount of labor. The classical theories failed to explain the change …
Intermolecular Potential Functions For Liquid Argon And Liquid Mercury, Richard H. Kerr
Intermolecular Potential Functions For Liquid Argon And Liquid Mercury, Richard H. Kerr
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this research is to obtain such intermolecular potential functions for liquid argon and liquid mercury by use of the experimental radial density functions available for these two liquids over a wide range of temperatures. We shall introduce the notion of a correlation between the motions of atoms in neighboring cells in a cell theory of liquid structure, and derive a theoretical radial density function involving the intermolecular potential function for a pair of atoms in the liquid. This radial density function, or as it is frequently termed, the atomic distribution function, applied to the experimental data should …
Ammonium And Alkylammonium Salts Of Carboxylic Acids As Characterizing Derivatives, Hal Gilbert Lankford
Ammonium And Alkylammonium Salts Of Carboxylic Acids As Characterizing Derivatives, Hal Gilbert Lankford
Masters Theses
"One of the methods widely used to establish the identity and purity of an organic compound is to prepare various derivatives, the properties of which have been reported in the literature. The object of this investigation was to prepare ammonium and alkylammonium salts of carboxylic acid and determine their utility as characterization derivatives. Should these salts meet the requirements of a satisfactory derivative, they would be particularly valuable from a standpoint time, since they are generally very quickly formed"--Introduction, page 1.
A Determination Of The Surface Tension Of Bismuth, Cadmium, Tin, And Lead, Edward Mckee Chandler
A Determination Of The Surface Tension Of Bismuth, Cadmium, Tin, And Lead, Edward Mckee Chandler
Masters Theses
"Various methods have been employed for the determination of surface tension including capillary rise, drop weight, maximum bubble pressure, sessile drops on flat surfaces, sessile bubbles formed underneath flat surfaces, and the shape of pendent drops. Each method is subject to characteristic advantages and disadvantages. Only two of these will be discussed. The method of maximum bubble pressure allows the formation of a fresh surface for every bubble but does not permit the study of a given sample over a period of time. The sessile drop in direct contrast, allows the observation of the same sample over any period of …
A Grazing Incidence Vacuum Grating Spectrograph For Far Ultra Violet Spectroscopy, Lawrey Huber Chapin
A Grazing Incidence Vacuum Grating Spectrograph For Far Ultra Violet Spectroscopy, Lawrey Huber Chapin
Masters Theses
"Spectroscopy, in the region of the far ultraviolet from 100 Angstroms to 1000 Angstroms, requires special equipment and techniques, inasmuch as these wavelengths are highly absorbed by air. Many gases have resonant frequencies corresponding to the wavelengths mentioned and hence absorption bands appear in the spectrograms obtained by using spectrographs for the visible region. One solution of the problem of obtaining data in this region is to construct a spectrograph from which all intervening gas molecules have been removed, thus eliminating the absorbing material. A vacuum of 10⁻⁴ mm. of mercury is necessary to reduce the absorption to a value …
The Reflection Coefficient At The Truncated Corner Of A Rectangular Wave Guide, John Raymond Barcroft
The Reflection Coefficient At The Truncated Corner Of A Rectangular Wave Guide, John Raymond Barcroft
Masters Theses
"The term wave guide refers to a hollow conducting tube (usually of rectangular or circular cross section) filled with a dielectric (or vacuum) and used for the transmission of electromagnetic waves. We shall consider the guide to be bounded by a perfect conductor and to be filled with a lossless homogeneous isotropic dielectric (or vacuum). The electromagnetic wave in the guide must of course satisfy Maxwell's equation. It must also satisfy the boundary condition that there be no tangential component of electric field at the surface of the conductor. If the electromagnetic waves traveling along the guide meet a discontinuity …
Geology Of The Crystal Mine, Hardin County, Illinois, John Amsden Emery
Geology Of The Crystal Mine, Hardin County, Illinois, John Amsden Emery
Masters Theses
"The study of the geology and mineralization of the Crystal Mine was undertaken at the suggestion of Mr. Dodson G. Gibson of the Crystal Fluorspar Company, who allowed access to the mine and its records for this purpose. The problem was to develop a system of prospecting the so-called bedded-replacement fluorspar deposits of Hardin County, Illinois. It is believed that an economically feasible method has been developed. This method involves not only the actual finding of fluorspar, but also serves as a guide in revealing structural trends suggestive of mineralization.
The fluorspar deposits of the Crystal Mine are representative of …
