Using Deep Neural Networks To Classify Astronomical Images, Andrew D. Macpherson
Using Deep Neural Networks To Classify Astronomical Images, Andrew D. Macpherson
Honors Projects
As the quantity of astronomical data available continues to exceed the resources available for analysis, recent advances in artificial intelligence encourage the development of automated classification tools. This paper lays out a framework for constructing a deep neural network capable of classifying individual astronomical images by describing techniques to extract and label these objects from large images.
A Comprehensive Survey On Functional Approximation, Yucheng Hua
A Comprehensive Survey On Functional Approximation, Yucheng Hua
Honors Projects
The theory of functional approximation has numerous applications in sciences and industry. This thesis focuses on the possible approaches to approximate a continuous function on a compact subset of R2 using a variety of constructions. The results are presented from the following four general topics: polynomials, Fourier series, wavelets, and neural networks. Approximation with polynomials on subsets of R leads to the discussion of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem. Convergence of Fourier series is characterized on the unit circle. Wavelets are introduced following the Fourier transform, and their construction as well as ability to approximate functions in L2(R) is …
An Exploratory Analysis Of The Bgsu Learning Commons Student Usage Data, Emily Eskuri
An Exploratory Analysis Of The Bgsu Learning Commons Student Usage Data, Emily Eskuri
Honors Projects
The purpose of this study was to explore past student usage data in individualized tutoring sessions from the Learning Commons from two academic years. The Bowling Green State University (BGSU) Learning Commons is a learning assistance center that offers various services, such as individualized tutoring, math assistance, writing assistance, study hours, and academic coaching. There have been limited research studies into how big data and analytics can have an impact in higher education, especially research utilizing predictive analytics.
This project applied analytics to individualized tutoring data in the Learning Commons to create a better understanding of why those trends happen …
Black Swamp Pub And Bistro Analysis, Sara Aniol
Black Swamp Pub And Bistro Analysis, Sara Aniol
Honors Projects
The Black Swamp Pub and Bistro is a full-service restaurant located in the Union on the Bowling Green State University Campus. We mainly do sit-down service, but we also do take-out orders and have a full bar with draft beers as well as mixed drinks. Our menu tends to change a lot, with new additions as well as some of the items being deleted. My goal of this project is to try to give some insight on the patterns that are too big to see with day-to-day operations as well as give some recommendations for the future that is backed …

Statistical Analysis Of Momentum In Basketball, Mackenzi Stump
Statistical Analysis Of Momentum In Basketball, Mackenzi Stump

The “hot hand” in sports has been debated for as long as sports have been around. The debate involves whether streaks and slumps in sports are true phenomena or just simply perceptions in the mind of the human viewer. This statistical analysis of momentum in basketball analyzes the distribution of time between scoring events for the BGSU Women’s Basketball team from 2011-2017. We discuss how the distribution of time between scoring events changes with normal game factors such as location of the game, game outcome, and several other factors. If scoring events during a game were always randomly distributed, or …
Graph-Ene, James E. Torres
Graph-Ene, James E. Torres
Honors Projects
GRAPH-ENE is a rich internet application for building and manipulating undirected, simple graphs. It is intended for use as a classroom teaching aid, plus as a tool for students to interactively manipulate graphs for assignments. Being web based, it is portable—it can run anywhere a browser is available. Since it is interactive, it provides problem-solving capabilities that are not available using pencil and paper.
