Essays In Monetary Policy For Emergingmarket Economies., Sargam Gupta Dr. Nov 2020

Essays In Monetary Policy For Emergingmarket Economies., Sargam Gupta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The eectiveness of monetary policy in emerging market economies (EMEs) depends on both internal and external factors. Central banks in EMEs have been grappling with volatile capital ows and instability in exchange rates, as a result of unconventional monetary policies adopted by advanced economies (AEs) in the post Global Financial Crisis (GFC) period of 2008-2009 (see Dedola et al. (2017) and Korinek (2018)).1 Concerns related to the inadequacy of monetary policy in EMEs in stabilizing exchange rates have also been raised in a recent speech delivered by Agustin Carstens at the London School of Economics.2 Domestically, what makes monetary policy …

Price Vs Quantity: Essays On Strategic Choice In Differentiated Oligopoly., Arindam Paul Dr. May 2020

Price Vs Quantity: Essays On Strategic Choice In Differentiated Oligopoly., Arindam Paul Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Industrial economists are often interested in comparing different market structures which are primarily based on their market outcomes and then try to determine the best market structure considering either the society’s welfare or the firm’s profit and sometimes considering both. In this context, the "Cournot-Bertrand comparison" is one such important comparison that has often been analyzed in the literature of industrial economics. The main structural difference between Cournot competition and Bertrand competition arises due to the strategic variable through which firms interact with each other in the market. To be more specific, in case of Cournot competition, firms compete with …

Modeling Reit Returns With Macroeconomic, Monetary Policy And Financial Variables In The Frameworks Of Structural Break And Regime-Switching Var: Evidence From The Usa And The Uk., Mahamitra Das Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis is basically concerned with studying the various relationships involving REIT returns, inflation, monetary policy variables, and general equity market returns in the USA and the UK markets by considering modeling approaches which allow for either structural breaks or regime-switching behavior in the relationship. Although study of such relationships, especially the one involving inflation and REIT returns, have evoked significant interest amongst researchers, the number of such studies is still very few in number. Moreover, there is an element of ‘puzzle’ embedded in this relationship. Hence, it is imperative as well as interesting that further empirical investigations are done …

Modelling The Links Between Inflation, Output Growth, Inflation Uncertainty And Output Growth Uncertainty In The Frameworks Of Regime-Switching And Multiple Structural Breaks: Evidence From The G7 Countries., Kushal Banik Chowdhury Dr. Jul 2015

Doctoral Theses

One of the long-standing and most investigated issues in macroeconomics is the nature of the relationship between inflation and output growth. Given this relationship as a central point of intense interest, one strand of studies has focused on the levels of the two series, while, more recently, an overgrowing body of research has highlighted the importance of the effects which are due to both the levels and the uncertainties associated with these two variables. These studies raise a number of interesting issues regarding the relationship between inflation and output growth. First, is there any direct effect of inflation on output …

Wealth Inequality And Economic Performances., Sahana Roy Chowdhury Dr. Mar 2011

Wealth Inequality And Economic Performances., Sahana Roy Chowdhury Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Ever since the inception of Development Economics as a separate discipline inequality has been a major area of extensive study. Economists and researchers have deliberated both on the causes and the effects of inequality in a wide range of treatise, books and essays. So far, in this regard, two fundamental approaches came across viz., the Classical approach and the Credit Market Imperfection approach. The Classical approach was originated by Smith (1937) and was further interpreted and developed by Keynes (1920), Lewis (1954), Kaldor (1957), and Bourguignon (1981). According to this approach, savings rate is an increasing function of wealth and …

Some Issues On Time Varying Risk Premium In Arch-M Model., Samarjit Das Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Since the 1970's it has been observed in many economies that financial and macroeconomic variables like equity prices, treasury bill rates and exchange rates have become more and more volatile in nature. This may be due tumor flexible monetary policies pursued in these countries as well as due to their increasing exposure towards various international developments. Accordingly, economic agents are facing increasingly more and more risky environment. Re- searchers as well as professional economists in the area of capital and business finance have, therefore, been increasingly attracted in recent years towards studying the effect of risk and uncertainty on asset …

Aspects Of Financial Dualism In Less Developed Country., Rajalaxmi Mallik Dr. May 2003

Aspects Of Financial Dualism In Less Developed Country., Rajalaxmi Mallik Dr.

Doctoral Theses

One significant aspect of the economic dualism that characterises less developed countries (LDCS) is financial dualism. This is manifested through the co-existence of formal-lenders (FLs) and informal-lenders (ILs), in the credit markets of LDCS, which stands in stark contrast to the integrated, organised and efficiently functioning credit markets of the developed countries. FLs refer to the large institutional lenders, like commercial banks and other government owned banks that are subject to various central bank regulations. The ILs on the other hand are a heterogeneous lot and consist of non-institutional lenders like indigenous bankers, moneylenders, traders, landlords etc., who are outside …

Essays On Cooperative Behaviour And Collective Action., Anindya Bhattacharya Dr. Jan 2002

Essays On Cooperative Behaviour And Collective Action., Anindya Bhattacharya Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This dissertation explores some issues concerning the behaviour of coalitions of individuals in a game theoretic set-up and also studies one aspect of a society facing collective action of the masses. The common feature of the issues explored in the dissertation is that it investigates the properties of stable social states. Chapter 2 introduces a notion of a social state that is unlikely to be displaced by any coalition of agents endowed with a certain notion of rationality and a certain degree of farsightedness and explores the properties of such states. Chapter 3 is also concerned with coalitionally stable social …

Some Aspects Of Banks And Financial Markets In Emerging Economics., Gurbachan Singh Dr. May 2001

Some Aspects Of Banks And Financial Markets In Emerging Economics., Gurbachan Singh Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Liquidity and Bank RunsThe policy of deposit insurance in the banking sector has succeeded in pre- venting bank runs but it has encouraged moral haxard (Kane, 1985 and 1989). This has increased the cost of capital. So the government and/or the central bank need to regulate (Flannery, 1982). In chapter 2, we ask the question - Is there an alternative to deposit insurance? What is the role of equity capital in this context? Is full insurance optimal? The seminal paper on bank runs by Diamond and Dybvig (1983) argues that a lack of deposit insurance leads to muitiple Nash equilibria, including …

Planning And Resource Mobilization In A Developing Economy., Dilip Ratha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In developing economies, the per capita availability of essential goods and services is quite low. Hence a large section of the society cannot afford even the mininum necessities of 1ite. While human and natural resources are plenty, produced means of produetion like plant and equipment and construction materiais are soaroe. Hence the human resources are not fully utilized. Since the distribution of income and assets is highly skewed, even the snall quantity of essential goods and services is not equitably distributed. When resources 11ke land and capital are privately owned and goods and services are distributed through the narket mechanism, …

If I am given the cholce to define Development Economi ea, I would do so in such a way that the work reported here aust eni nent ly belong to the realm of that discipline. Before proceeding further one must remenber what Hirschman said nearly 28 yeara ago ...probably that econonists have not been able to construct, much less agree on, a alngle and unbroken chain of causes and effects that would neatly explain the transition from While this f ailure is of course only to the credit of economists, it cannot be denied that Underdevelopment to development. General Equilbrium Analysis Of Price And Distribution Controls For Foodgrains And Textiles In India., P. V. Srinivasan Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Unlike in many developed countries, in India, institutions for distribution of goods and services are not well developed. Hence policy makers are concerned with the development of economic institutions to promote growth, remove unemployment and eradicate poverty. In addition to the general fiscal and monetary policy instruments such as taxes, su bsidies, bank rate, open market operations etc, the government also uses several price and non-price controls. For example, it administers the prices of essential inputs such as steel, coal, power ete, and distributes certain essential commodities through ration s hops at a price lower than the market prices. One way …
