Essays On Applied Welfare Economics., Sutirtha Bandyopadhyay Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The measurement of welfare forms the foundation of public policy analysis. It is an area where empirical investigations clearly benefits from theoretical insight and where theoretical concepts are brought alive and appropriately focused by the discipline of empirical relevance and policy design. While welfare measurement at the micro level is of independent interest, of greater concern is the well-being of groups of households/individuals.A widely discussed issue in the literature of welfare economics is ‘whose welfare to measure’ when we are interested to measure the well-being of a group of individuals. The most common approach is to assume the existence of …

Essays On Air Pollution, Global Warming And Agriculture Productivity., Ridhima Gupta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This dissertation consists of three chapters, each of which deals with a particular aspect of environmental policy. The first chapter focuses on the determinants of open-field burning of rice-residue with the aim of analysing possibilities for its regulation. Open field burning is the second-largest contributor to black carbon in South Asia, the second most important greenhouse agent after carbon dioxide. Thus, dealing with the problem of burning of rice residue will tackle a significant proportion of the black carbon emissions released into the atmosphere. The third chapter proposes a new approach for estimating the contribution of agricultural fires to atmospheric …

Three Essays On The Impact Of Global Warming In India., Eshita Gupta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This dissertation consists of three chapters. The Örst chapter studies the impact of climate change on electricity demand in Delhi using daily data on electricity demand and apparent temperature for the period 2000-09. It estimates a semi-parametric variable coe¢ - cient model that allows for a non-linear relationship between temperature and electricity to shift over time, a feature that is necessary to incorporate given the rapid economic growth in India. As evident from previous studies, electricity demand is a U-shaped function of temperature. Three results from our analysis have important implications for electricityclimate policy: Firstly, the rising part of the …

Agriculture Trade And Protectionism., Debasmita Basu Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Ever since the inception of the World Trade Organization free trade in agricultural goods has been difficult to implement. The developed countries, who are otherwise active proponents of free trade, seem reluctant to remove the subsidies from the agricultural sector, making way for unfair competition against the poor developing nations. The Common Agricultural Program (CAP) spending of around ¿58 bn each year in the European countries as agricultural subsidy has always been subject to controversy. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has also devised a variety of programs to supplement the farmers’ income, support commodity market price and manage supply. Public Policy, Long Run Growth And Economic Transition From Agriculture To Industrial Mass Production., Rudrani Bhattacharya Dr. Apr 2011

Public Policy, Long Run Growth And Economic Transition From Agriculture To Industrial Mass Production., Rudrani Bhattacharya Dr.

Doctoral Theses

It has been recognized that the heart of the development process lies on the transformation of an economy from traditional activities in agriculture to industrial activities. As emphasized by Lewis (1954), the movement of labor from primary sector to industry is conducive to the rise of economy’s savings and investment rate and thus fostering economic growth. The core of this paradigm is the historically observed rapid growth in today’s developed countries associated with expansion of industrial activities. It is well-documented by now that at least over a few centuries leading up to 1800 AD there was little change in the world …

The primary goal of economic development is to achieve high rates of growth of outputs and incomes so to ensure high per as capita income and levels of living in the economy. Quite expectedly, this has evoked substantial debate on the factors influencing and/or …

Interaction Of Price And Technology In The Presence Of Structural Specificities:An Analysis Of Crop Production In Kerala., Delampady Narayana Dr.

The present study attempts to understand the agricultural economy of Kerala in terms of the structural characteristics specific to the state. This approach requires such aspects to be incorporated in the analysis, and also entails a shift from certain accepted modes of thinking and statistical treatment used in the analysis of field crops. The specificities arise from certain distinctive features on the demand and supply sides'. On the demand side, there is substi tution between rice and tapioca, and the two crops constitute the food group. The rest of the crops form the non-food group, and there is no substitution among …

Agricultural Tenancy In Palanpur., Naresh Kumar Sharma Dr. Feb 1993

Agricultural Tenancy In Palanpur., Naresh Kumar Sharma Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Institutions and arrangements governing the property and use of land are crucial to the development of productive forces. This is true, in particular, of triennial arrangements. The system of land tenures that prevailed during the colonial period was widely considered the main cause of economic stagnation at the time of India's independence (1947). It was also perceived as highly exploitative of the tenants. Thus, land reforms were accorded the highest priority by the new Indian Government. Soon all the State Legislatures started enacting land reform laws - starting with the Legislative Assembly of Bihar immediately after 1947 and the Legislative …

Multisectoral Model Of Income Distribution Poverty And Growth:Some Policy Exercies For Indian Economy., Debdas Bandyopadhyay Dr. Feb 1987

Multisectoral Model Of Income Distribution Poverty And Growth:Some Policy Exercies For Indian Economy., Debdas Bandyopadhyay Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The extent of poverty in any country depends upon two factors vlz, the average level of income anxd the degree of inequality in its distribution. The central theme in the continuing debate on the relationship between growth and poverty is whether past growth process in the developing countries has caused any signi.licant benefit to the poor. Kuznets (1955) was first to observe from cross country data that procosa of development is likely to be accompanied by increase in inequality, whhich would reverse itself only at a relatively advanced stage. This hypothesis has been subsequently confirned to some extent by several …

On The Choice Of Shadow Prices For Project Evaluation., Jean Dreze Dr. Aug 1984

On The Choice Of Shadow Prices For Project Evaluation., Jean Dreze Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Manohar athanna is one of the remotest parts of Jhalawar District (Rajasthan, India). In the month of June it offers a striking contrast of scenic beauty and economic destitution. Agricultural activity is at a virtual standstill. The soil is very arid, irrigation practically non-existent, and by then the villagers (many of them tribals) have resolved to wait upon the good will of the rain gods.. Hence they have very little to do, or at least so they believe. Some gather wood to sell it in Manohar, walking miles under the scorching sun for a meagre reward, and adding slowly but …

Replacement Strategies For Ageing Assets With Specific Reference To Coconut Plams In Kerala., Chandan Mukherjee Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Produotion assets which deteriorate in performance with time (or age) are required to be replaced. In general, a stream of benefits and costa are associated with every productive asset, be it a machine or a tree. Ugually, in replacement theory, the benefits and costs are taken as given functions of the age of the asset. These functions provide the oriteria for identifying the pÅ‚ysical condition of the asset. In simple replacement models, an asset is replaced by an ider tical one. The objective of a replacement policy is to find a sequence of time pointe (or alternatively, replacement ages) for …
