Thermal Transport Across 2d/3d Van Der Waals Interfaces, Cameron Foss Apr 2023

Thermal Transport Across 2d/3d Van Der Waals Interfaces, Cameron Foss

Doctoral Dissertations

Designing improved field-effect-transistors (FETs) that are mass-producible and meet the fabrication standards set by legacy silicon CMOS manufacturing is required for pushing the microelectronics industry into further enhanced technological generations. Historically, the downscaling of feature sizes in FETs has enabled improved performance, reduced power consumption, and increased packing density in microelectronics for several decades. However, many are claiming Moore's law no longer applies as the era of silicon CMOS scaling potentially nears its end with designs approaching fundamental atomic-scale limits -- that is, the few- to sub-nanometer range. Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) materials present a new paradigm of materials science and …

Properties And Manipulation Of Ionic Liquid-Solid Interfaces In Complex Oxide Materials, Anthony Thomas Wong May 2017

Properties And Manipulation Of Ionic Liquid-Solid Interfaces In Complex Oxide Materials, Anthony Thomas Wong

Doctoral Dissertations

Ionic liquids are liquid salts that are bringing rapid changes to the field of solid electronic materials. The implementation of ionic liquids in conjunction with these solid materials produces interfacial effects, especially when a bias is applied across the ionic liquid, forming an electric double layer. Electric double layers in ionic liquids are unique in their formation and the interfacial charges that are orders of magnitude higher than conventional techniques they can impart, providing new techniques for device design and implementation. In chapter 1, the fundamentals of the solid state electronic and magnetic materials are introduced, along with ionic liquids, …

Polymer And Fullerene Zwitterions: From Synthesis To Solar Cells, Zachariah A. Page Nov 2015

Polymer And Fullerene Zwitterions: From Synthesis To Solar Cells, Zachariah A. Page

Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis describes the synthesis and applications of hydrophilic conjugated polymers and fullerenes containing dipole-inducing pendent groups. The pendent groups include tertiary amines, sulfobetaine (SB) zwitterions, quaternary ammoniums, and sulfonates, providing solubility in polar solvents. Particular emphasis is placed on zwitterions functalized structures. Suzuki-Miyaura (SM) and Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) coupling reactions proved valuable for the preparation of the hydrophilic conjugated polymers, while the Prato reaction afforded the functional fulleropyrrolidines. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) probed the interactions between the hydrophilic conjugated polymers and conductive metal substrates. In particular, UPS revealed that conjugated polymer zwitterions (CPZs) substantially reduce work function (Φ) of metals, …

Effects Of 2000-2050 Global Climate Change On Ozone And Particulate Matter Air Quality In The United States Using Models-3/Cmaq System, Yun-Fat Lam Aug 2010

Effects Of 2000-2050 Global Climate Change On Ozone And Particulate Matter Air Quality In The United States Using Models-3/Cmaq System, Yun-Fat Lam

Doctoral Dissertations

The Models-3/Community Multi-scale Air Quality modeling system (CMAQ), coupled with Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) atmospheric General Circulation Model (GCM), fifth Generation Mesoscale Model system (MM5), and Goddard Earth Observing System-CHEMistry (GEOS-Chem), was used to simulate atmospheric concentration of ozone and particulate matter over the continental United States 12-km and 36-km (CONUS) domains at year 2000 and year 2050. In the study, GISS GCM model outputs interfaced with MM5 were utilized to supply the current and future meteorological conditions for CMAQ. The conventional CMAQ profile initial and boundary conditions were replaced by time-varied and layer-varied GEOS-Chem outputs. The future …
