Performance Optimization Of Big Data Computing Workflows For Batch And Stream Data Processing In Multi-Clouds, Huiyan Cao Dec 2020

Performance Optimization Of Big Data Computing Workflows For Batch And Stream Data Processing In Multi-Clouds, Huiyan Cao

Dissertations

Workflow techniques have been widely used as a major computing solution in many science domains. With the rapid deployment of cloud infrastructures around the globe and the economic benefits of cloud-based computing and storage services, an increasing number of scientific workflows have migrated or are in active transition to clouds. As the scale of scientific applications continues to grow, it is now common to deploy various data- and network-intensive computing workflows such as serial computing workflows, MapReduce/Spark-based workflows, and Storm-based stream data processing workflows in multi-cloud environments, where inter-cloud data transfer oftentimes plays a significant role in both workflow performance …

Energy And Performance-Optimized Scheduling Of Tasks In Distributed Cloud And Edge Computing Systems, Haitao Yuan Aug 2020

Energy And Performance-Optimized Scheduling Of Tasks In Distributed Cloud And Edge Computing Systems, Haitao Yuan

Dissertations

Infrastructure resources in distributed cloud data centers (CDCs) are shared by heterogeneous applications in a high-performance and cost-effective way. Edge computing has emerged as a new paradigm to provide access to computing capacities in end devices. Yet it suffers from such problems as load imbalance, long scheduling time, and limited power of its edge nodes. Therefore, intelligent task scheduling in CDCs and edge nodes is critically important to construct energy-efficient cloud and edge computing systems. Current approaches cannot smartly minimize the total cost of CDCs, maximize their profit and improve quality of service (QoS) of tasks because of aperiodic arrival …

Storage Systems For Mobile-Cloud Applications, Nafize R. Paiker Dec 2018

Storage Systems For Mobile-Cloud Applications, Nafize R. Paiker

Dissertations

Mobile devices have become the major computing platform in todays world. However, some apps on mobile devices still suffer from insufficient computing and energy resources. A key solution is to offload resource-demanding computing tasks from mobile devices to the cloud. This leads to a scenario where computing tasks in the same application run concurrently on both the mobile device and the cloud.

This dissertation aims to ensure that the tasks in a mobile app that employs offloading can access and share files concurrently on the mobile and the cloud in a manner that is efficient, consistent, and transparent to locations. …

High Performance Cloud Computing On Multicore Computers, Jianchen Shan May 2018

High Performance Cloud Computing On Multicore Computers, Jianchen Shan

Dissertations

The cloud has become a major computing platform, with virtualization being a key to allow applications to run and share the resources in the cloud. A wide spectrum of applications need to process large amounts of data at high speeds in the cloud, e.g., analyzing customer data to find out purchase behavior, processing location data to determine geographical trends, or mining social media data to assess brand sentiment. To achieve high performance, these applications create and use multiple threads running on multicore processors. However, existing virtualization technology cannot support the efficient execution of such applications on virtual machines, making them …

Performance Optimization And Energy Efficiency Of Big-Data Computing Workflows, Tong Shu Jul 2017

Performance Optimization And Energy Efficiency Of Big-Data Computing Workflows, Tong Shu

Dissertations

Next-generation e-science is producing colossal amounts of data, now frequently termed as Big Data, on the order of terabyte at present and petabyte or even exabyte in the predictable future. These scientific applications typically feature data-intensive workflows comprised of moldable parallel computing jobs, such as MapReduce, with intricate inter-job dependencies. The granularity of task partitioning in each moldable job of such big data workflows has a significant impact on workflow completion time, energy consumption, and financial cost if executed in clouds, which remains largely unexplored. This dissertation conducts an in-depth investigation into the properties of moldable jobs and provides an …

Protecting Sensitive Data In Clouds Using Active Data Bundles And Agent-Based Secure Multi-Party Computation, Akram Y. Sarhan Apr 2017

Protecting Sensitive Data In Clouds Using Active Data Bundles And Agent-Based Secure Multi-Party Computation, Akram Y. Sarhan

Dissertations

Protection of data in cloud computing including distributed environments is a critical concern for many enterprises. This study proposes a solution that protects sensitive data outsourced to a cloud throughout their entire life cycle—both in the cloud as well as outside of the cloud (e.g., during transmission to or from the cloud). The solution enhances the existing data protection approach known as Active Bundle scheme, which uses a Trusted Third Party (ABTTP).

The Active Data Bundle (ADB) was formerly called an Active Bundle (AB). It is a software construct that encapsulates data, metadata, and a virtual machine (VM). The metadata …

Enabling Virtualization Technologies For Enhanced Cloud Computing, Kashifuddin Qazi Jan 2015

Enabling Virtualization Technologies For Enhanced Cloud Computing, Kashifuddin Qazi

Dissertations

Cloud Computing is a ubiquitous technology that offers various services for individual users, small businesses, as well as large scale organizations. Data-center owners maintain clusters of thousands of machines and lease out resources like CPU, memory, network bandwidth, and storage to clients. For organizations, cloud computing provides the means to offload server infrastructure and obtain resources on demand, which reduces setup costs as well as maintenance overheads. For individuals, cloud computing offers platforms, resources and services that would otherwise be unavailable to them.

At the core of cloud computing are various virtualization technologies and the resulting Virtual Machines (VMs). Virtualization …

Cloud Computing:Strategies For Cloud Computing Adoption, Faith Shimba Sep 2010

Cloud Computing:Strategies For Cloud Computing Adoption, Faith Shimba

Dissertations

The advent of cloud computing in recent years has sparked an interest from different organisations, institutions and users to take advantage of web applications. This is a result of the new economic model for the Information Technology (IT) department that cloud computing promises. The model promises a shift from an organisation required to invest heavily for limited IT resources that are internally managed, to a model where the organisation can buy or rent resources that are managed by a cloud provider, and pay per use. Cloud computing also promises scalability of resources and on-demand availability of resources.

Although, the adoption …
