Creating Characters In A Game Based Learning System, Jaehyun Park, Siegwart Mayr Apr 2023

Creating Characters In A Game Based Learning System, Jaehyun Park, Siegwart Mayr

Campus Research Day

Gamification is the idea of adding video game elements into a non-gaming context, such as for educational or business purposes. Game-based learning takes that idea one step further by not only adding elements of video games, but turning the whole process into a game-like structure.

The Center for Innovation and Research in Computing (CIRC) is currently developing a game-based learning system that can be used in place of a traditional classroom setting. The focus of this research work is on the relationship between users and characters within a course in the Character Module. The Character Module encompasses everything to do …

Game-Based Learning Activities And Assignments, Samuel Rivera, Siegwart Mayr

Campus Research Day

The Center for Innovation and Research in Computing (CIRC) is creating a web application that uses game-based learning to help students be engaged and collaborate, as an adventure-based quest.

In this research project, the activity module was created for this web application. This module contains assignment creation, completion, and grading. These assignments can be included in the quests and courses. The seamless connection between the activity module and the course module was possible with the Yii framework.

Open Data Indicates That Collegedale Could Be A Bluezone, Tristan Deschamps, Alva Johnson Apr 2023

Open Data Indicates That Collegedale Could Be A Bluezone, Tristan Deschamps, Alva Johnson

Campus Research Day

A blue zone is an indicator of exceptional health in a community. Adventists have a blue zone community in Loma Linda, but there has been little research into other Adventist populated areas that could be blue zones. Therefore, our goal is to show that open data suggests that a blue zone may exist near Southern Adventist University, specifically in Collegedale. This data has been gathered from different federal sources, including, the CDC, the US Census Bureau, the Tennessee Department of Health, official state records, and federal documents that are available to the public.

Generating University Course Catalogs Via A Php Based Module, Chileleko Chileya, Siegwart Mayr Apr 2023

Generating University Course Catalogs Via A Php Based Module, Chileleko Chileya, Siegwart Mayr

Campus Research Day

Catalogs are a requirement at any university. The current academic system at Southern Adventist University entails creating catalogs for the school by hand. The current model is very outdated and time consuming especially considering the database of all related school records available. The solution is a module using the PHP based framework called Yii to construct a module that will be integrated into the Southern Adventist University website that will automatically generate formatted catalogs through the frontend of the website. The previous module uses Kuali to store academic data as well as provide an API for third-party applications but was …

Creating And Evaluating Dimensional Analysis Software For University Students, Ac Hýbl Apr 2023

Creating And Evaluating Dimensional Analysis Software For University Students, Ac Hýbl

Campus Research Day

Most scientific disciplines depend on mathematics to varying degrees. Real-world problems often include quantifiable measurements with units. For example, chemistry, physics, and pharmacology require flawless unit conversions and dimensional homogeneity to obtain acceptable results. Students often choose to ignore units until the end of the problem-solving process, but this introduces errors and robs students of a deep understanding of units. Current tools for teaching dimensional analysis are limited both in scope and accessibility. Unit Playground addresses this issue by providing an interactive interface to experiment with units and their relationships.

Visualizing The Spread Of Western Music Throughout The World Using Big Data, Dakota C. Cookenmaster Apr 2023

Visualizing The Spread Of Western Music Throughout The World Using Big Data, Dakota C. Cookenmaster

Campus Research Day

Music, perhaps the most prevailing form of art throughout the ages, has impacted the world in countless ways. Due to the vast magnitude of published musical compositions, it is difficult to comprehend the full extent of how Western music has spread from Europe to the rest of the world. Our contribution is a presentation of the history of music throughout the ages, highlighting the countries of publication by year since the 15th century. Our visualization also exhibits the top 10 most prevalent composers within the British Library, with additional information such as the composers’ number of works and lifespan.

Incorporation Of Thiophenes And Benzothiophenes Into Novel Pi-Extended Dibenzophosphole Systems, Joshua Kim, Conner Schell Apr 2023

Incorporation Of Thiophenes And Benzothiophenes Into Novel Pi-Extended Dibenzophosphole Systems, Joshua Kim, Conner Schell

Campus Research Day

Dibenzophospholes are molecules with extended pi conjugation. This project aims to incorporate thiophenes and benzothiophenes into dibenzophosphole systems by using 2-bromothiophene, 2-bromobenzothiophene, and 3-bromobenzothiophene as starting materials. An ethyne intermediate is created via the Sonagashira reaction, which is further reacted to form the novel dibenzophosphole system. The ultimate goal is to fuse the newly incorporated functional groups, creating an even greater degree of conjugation.

An Ab Initio Computation Of The Potential Energy Surfaces Of The Dna Bases, Anjali F. Filinovich, Vola Andrianarijaona

Campus Research Day

The potential energy surfaces of atoms in DNA can be analyzed and compared to show how their bonds break. This DNA potential energy reference data is very useful to understanding how DNA damage occurs, however, a dataset of relevant potential energy surfaces is not available for scientific use. We obtain the potential energy surfaces of various atoms in the four DNA bases adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine, by moving an atom in these molecules in three orthogonal directions using ORCA, an ab initio quantum chemistry software. Density functional theory is
used to compute potential energies as an atom is moved, …

Visualizing Literary Narratives With A Graph-Centered Approach., Meg Ermer Apr 2023

Visualizing Literary Narratives With A Graph-Centered Approach., Meg Ermer

Campus Research Day

The art of storytelling is multifaceted and nonlinear, involving multiple characters, themes, and symbols while often jumping between the present and past. While media forms such as novels can encapsulate these complexities, it is often difficult to visualize a narrative in an easy-to-understand format. Our contribution is a graph-based system to let users organize and visualize those narratives. Events and characters are represented as nodes and their relationships are represented as edges. Neo4J is used as a database management system to store the graph and to run queries on it, and Streamlit and Pyvis are used to represent the database …
