In August 2017, a dynamite-sourced 2D seismic reflection survey was conducted along a gravel road northwest of Portland, Indiana. The main focus of the survey was to determine the orientation of a lithologic unit previously identified by Welder (2014) on a similar 2D seismic reflection survey in the same area. Drillers logs of two wells within this area identified a limestone layer below the Mt. Simon Sandstone, and a similar limestone layer was identified in a well drilled in Clark County, Ohio. The influence of surface effects on a hysteresis loop for single domain, ferromagnetic nanoparticles was examined. Theoretical equations were derived to describe the magnetic behavior of the domains and a MATLAB program was used to solve them. M-H curves were calculated for the case when a magnetic field is applied in the favorable magnetization direction (easy axis). In contrast, the calculations show there were no hysteresis loops when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to the easy axis. Plume clouds can be produced from blast mining, chemical warfare, unintended man-made disasters, and natural causes. This thesis provides implementation of the capability to simulate a 3D environment in which UAVs are individually controlled and each report a plume's concentration value at a specific location. Streams modify the transport of these resources to receiving ecosystems through uptake, transformation, and mineralization. However, until recently, there has been little concrete progress on developing an analytical result to relate soil depth or quality to measurable variables that represent the five soil-forming factors including time, parent material, topography, climate, and organisms. Recurrent neural language (RNN) models are the state-of-the-art method for language modeling. When the vocabulary size is large, the space taken to store the model parameters becomes the bottleneck for the use of these type of models. We introduce a simple space compression method that stochastically shares the structured parameters at both the input and output embedding layers of RNN models to significantly reduce the size of model parameters, but still compactly represents the original input and the output embedding layers. Previous fractal analyses of shoreline roughness have measured the fractal dimension of long segments of shoreline, e.g. Mandelbrot (1983) quantified the shoreline of the west coast of Britain and Feder (1988) quantified the shoreline of Norway. Consequently, changes in roughness along short segments are not captured by the analysis. In this study, the fractal dimension of the mainland shoreline of the contiguous United States has been measured in 125, 250, and 375 km segments using the box-counting method. Lake Erie experiences annual cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (HABs), comprised mostly of non-nitrogen-fixing Microcystis, due to excess nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) inputs (eutrophication). Lake Erie's watershed is mostly agricultural, and fertilizers, manure, and drainage practices contribute to high nutrient loads. This study aimed to clarify the role of Lake Erie sediments in either exacerbating or mitigating conditions that fuel HABs via recycling and/or removal, respectively, of excess N and P. In this thesis, the effects of the external pressure and surface energy on stability and wetting transition at nanotextured interfaces are studied using molecular dynamics and continuum simulations. The surface roughness of the composite interface is modeled via an array of spherical nanoparticles with controlled wettability. It was found that in the absence of external pressure, the liquid interface is flat and its location relative to the solid substrate is determined by the radius of the particle and the local contact angle. Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant toxic to humans and wildlife. Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a bioavailable compound that bioaccumulates and biomagnifies in food webs. Humans are primarily exposed to MMHg from seafood consumption (Sunderland 2007), and high quantities of the neurotoxin lead to reduced neurocognitive functioning in adults and the children of exposed mothers (Cohen et al. 2005, Yokoo et al. 2003). The synthesis of N-heterocycle functionalized triphenylphosphine oxide based PAEs, utilizing 3,5 difluorinated diphenyl sulfone systems was achieved. 3’-Iodo 3,5-difluorodiphenylsulfone was subjected to copper and palladium catalyzed coupling reactions with carbazole, phenothiazine, and indole. The syntheses of 3’-(9-carbazole) 3,5-difluorodiphenylsulfone, 3’-(9-phenothiazine) 3,5-difluorodiphenylsulfone, and 3’-(9-indole) 3,5-difluorodiphenylsulfone were successfully carried out. Copolymers with 4,4’ difluorotriphenylphosphine oxide, as well as 4,4’ dihydroxydiphenyl ether (DPE), as the nucleophilic partner, were prepared via standard nucleophilic aromatic substitution (NAS) polycondensataion reactions. This thesis presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a visualization enabling users to browse through voluminous information and comprehend the data. Implemented with the JavaScript library Data Driven Documents (D3), the visualization represents the search as clusters of similar documents grouped into bubbles with the contents depicted as word-clouds. An important research element in the Turnbull laboratory has been the one-pot synthesis of 5-methyl-3-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one from sydnone. The present study reexamined the reaction of 5-methyl-3-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one with electrophiles and optimized methods for synthesis of oxadiazolinone derivatives. Further the oxadiazolinone derivatives were reacted with electrophiles to better comprehend the donating ability of the oxadiazolinone ring system in general with the expectation that the oxadiazolinone ring system is a slightly donating system. Binary sequences and arrays, their higher dimensional counterparts, play a critical role in today's technologically advanced world. This thesis explores such sequences and their optimality under various conditions along with their applicability to problems in engineering such as communication and radar systems. A new asymptotically orthogonal type of matrix is defined with computational examples given along with infinite theoretical families. A high energy ternary sequence is developed and shown to have real world promise by simulation of its radar ambiguity function and frame synchronization.
