Among the different energy storage systems, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely applied in various portable electronic devices due to their high energy densities, long cycle life, and lack of significant memory effect [1]. For wide-scale implementation of renewable energy, LIBs, however, face challenges related to their safety, lifetime, and cost. Based on the wide availability and low cost of sodium, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have the potential for meeting the demands of large-scale and sustainable applications. Many cathode materials have been proposed, whereas only a few anode materials have been investigated for SIBs [2]. The sodium ion (1.02 Å) …

Paper-like free-standing germanium (Ge) and single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) composite anodes were synthesized by the vacuum filtration of Ge/SWCNT composites, which were prepared by a facile aqueous-based method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the Ge/SWCNT composite paper anode with the weight percentage of 32% Ge delivered a specific discharge capacity of 417 mA h g−1 after 40 cycles at a current density of 25 mA g−1, 117% higher than the pure SWCNT paper anode. The SWCNTs not only function as a flexible mechanical support for …

Here we have designed a strategy to improve the electronic conductivities of polyoxometalates (POMs) via property-oriented organic grafting for use in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). POMs usually exhibit limited electronic conductivity that hinders their use in electronic applications. Organic grafting of POMs defines a valuable path for improving electronic conductivities of POMs, due to the enhanced metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) via d-π electronic interactions, and results in their feasible application in LIBs. Comparative practical and theoretical study of the effect of functional groups revealed that grafting of the remote electron withdrawing group (-SCN) on POMs via organo-imidoylization along with …
