Several important classes of normal logic programs, including the classes of acyclic, acceptable, and locally hierarchical programs, have the property that every program in the class has a unique two-valued supported model. In this paper, we call such classes unique supported model classes. We analyse and characterize these classes by means of operators on three-valued logics. Our studies will motivate the definition of a larger unique supported model class which we call the class of Phi-accessible programs. Pertussis (whooping cough) incidence in the United States has oscillated with a period of about four years since data was first collected in 1922. An infection with pertussis confers immunity for several years, but then the immunity wanes, so that reinfection is possible. A pertussis reinfection is mild after partial loss of immunity, but the reinfection can be severe after complete loss of immunity. Three pertussis transmission models with waning of immunity are examined for periodic solutions. Equilibria and their stability are determined. Hopf bifurcation of periodic solutions around the endemic equilibrium can occur for some parameter values in two …

The k-means algorithm and the principal curve algorithm are special cases of a self-consistency algorithm. A general self-consistency algorithm is described and results are provided describing the behavior of the algorithm for theoretical distributions, in particular elliptical distributions. The results are used to contrast the behavior of the algorithms when applied to a theoretical model and when applied to finite datasets from the model. The algorithm is also used to determine principal loops for the bivariate normal distribution.

Influence of oxygen pressure on the epitaxy, surface morphology, and optoelectronic properties has been studied in the case of ZnO thin films grown on sapphire ~0001! by pulsed-laser deposition. Results of Rutherford backscattering and ion channeling in conjunction with atomic force microscopy clearly indicate that the growth mode, degree of epitaxy, and the defect density strongly depend on the oxygen background pressure during growth. It is also found that the growth mode and the defects strongly influence the electron mobility, free-electron concentration, and the luminescence properties of the ZnO films. This paper presents a new recursive Bayesian learning approach for transformation parameter estimation in speaker adaptation. Our goal is to incrementally transform (or adapt) the entire set of HMM parameters for a new speaker or new acoustic enviroment from a small amount of adaptation data. By establishing a clustering tree of HMM Gaussian mixture components, the finest affine transformation parameters for individual HMM Gaussian mixture components can be dynamically searched. The on-line Bayesian learning technique proposed in our recent work is used for recursive maximum a posteriori estimation of affine transformation parameters. Low-Frequency Noise In N-Gan With High Electron Mobility, M. E. Levinshtein, S. L. Rumyantsev, David C. Look, Richard J. Molnar, M. A. Khan, G. Simin, V. Adivarahan, M. S. Shur

We report on the results of measurements of low frequency noise in n-type gallium nitride (GaN) grown on sapphire with 300 K electron mobility of 790 cm2/V s. The noise spectra have the form of 1/f noise with a Hooge parameter α of approximately 5×10−2. This value of α is two orders of magnitude smaller than that observed before in n-GaN. The obtained results show that the level of flicker noise in GaN, just like that in GaAs and Si, strongly depends on the structural perfection of the material (the amplitude of the …

High-quality ZnO crystals have been grown by vapor-phase techniques and by the hydrothermal method. Depending on the surface preparation technique, some hydrothermally grown crystals contain strain. These strains result in energy shifts of the free excitons as well as relaxation of the selection rules. The Γ6 unallowed exciton is observed in these samples without the application of a magnetic field. The Γ6 exciton is also observed to split in a strain field, consistent with the Γ9 symmetry for the top valence band in ZnO. The Γ5 and Γ6 excitons have been observed to split in …

Velocity Distributions Of C Atoms In Co+ Dissociative Recombination: Implications For Photochemical Escape Of C From Mars, Jane L. Fox, Aleksander Hać

We have carried out Monte Carlo calculations to determine the velocity distributions of C atoms produced by dissociative recombination of CO+ using recent data for the branching ratios of various allowed channels and ion and electron temperatures appropriate to the Martian thermosphere. We find that the fractions of 12C atoms with velocities greater than the escape velocity are ∼ 0.66 and ∼ 0.62, and those for 13C are ∼ 0.47 and ∼ 0.48 at the plasma temperatures characteristic of the exobases at low and high solar activities, respectively. Image resolution is the primary parameter for performance characterization of any imaging system. In this work, we present an axiomatic approach for quantification of image resolution, and demonstrate that a good image resolution measure should be proportional to the standard deviation of the point spread function of an imaging system.

In the coming era of segment-of-one marketing, decisions about business transactions will be quite intricate, so that customer treatments can be highly individualized, reflecting customer preferences, targeted business objectives, etc. This paper describes a paradigm called “decision flows” for specifying a form of incremental decision-making that can combine a myriad of diverse business factors and be executed in near-realtime. Starting with initial input, a decision flow will iteratively gather and derive additional information until a conclusion is reached. Decision flows can be specified in a rules-based manner that generalizes so-called “business rules” but provides more structure than traditional expert systems. …

High-energy (>1.6 MeV) electrons create acceptors and donors in single-crystal ZnO. Greater damage is observed for irradiation in the [0001] direction (Zn face) than in the [000] direction (O face). The major annealing stage occurs at about 300–325 °C, and is much sharper for defects produced by Zn-face irradiation, than for those resulting from O-face irradiation. The defects appear to have a chain character, rather than being simple, near-neighbor vacancy/interstitial Frenkel pairs. These experiments suggest that ZnO is significantly more “radiation hard” than Si, GaAs, or GaN, and should be useful for applications in high-irradiation environments, such as electronics …

The emission and reflection spectra of ZnO have been investigated in the intrinsic region and the data have been interpreted in terms of the wurtzite crystal band structure. Free-exciton emission is observed for the first time. Both the Γ5 and Γ6 state excitons associated with top valence band have been identified. This identification has established the valence-band symmetry ordering in ZnO.

The Department of Defense (DoD) needs multilevel secure (MLS) workflow management systems to enable globally distributed users and applications to cooperate across classification levels to achieve mission critical goals. An MLS workflow management system that allows a user to program multilevel mission logic, to securely coordinate widely distributed tasks, and to monitor the progress of the workflow across classification levels is required. In this paper, we present a roadmap for implementing MLS workflows and focus on a workflow builder that is a graphical design tool for specifying such workflows.

High-energy electron irradiation in ZnO produces shallow donors at about EC-30meV. Because the production rate is much higher for Zn-face (0001) than O-face (0001̅ ) irradiation, the donor is identified as a Zn-sublattice defect, most likely the interstitial ZnI or a ZnI-related complex. The donor energy is quite close to that of the unirradiated sample, and of other samples discussed in the literature, strongly suggesting that ZnI (and not VO) is the dominant native shallow donor in ZnO. We develop a data integration approach for the efficient evaluation of queries over autonomous source databases. The approach is based on some novel applications and extensions of constraint database techniques. We assume the existence of a global database schema. The contents of each data source are described using a set of constraint tuples over the global schema; each such tuple indicates possible contributions from the source. Partial periodicity search, i.e., search for partial periodic patterns in time-series databases, is an interesting data mining problem. Previous studies on periodicity search mainly consider finding full periodic patterns, where every point in time contributes (precisely or approximately) to the periodicity. However, partial periodicity is very common in practice since it is more likely that only some of the time episodes may exhibit periodic patterns.

A theory of charged-dislocation-line scattering is developed within the framework of the Boltzmann transport equation. A fit of the theory to temperature-dependent Hall-effect data in GaN gives dislocation densities which are in excellent agreement with those measured by transmission electron microscopy. This work shows that threading edge dislocations in GaN indeed are electrically active, in agreement with recent theoretical predictions.

In this paper, we discuss the semantics of disjunctive programs and databases and show how multivalued mappings and their fixed points arise naturally within this context. A number of fixed-point theorems for multivalued mappings are considered, some of which are already known and some of which are new. The notion of a normal derivative of a disjunctive program is introduced. Normal derivatives are normal logic programs which are determined by the disjunctive program. Thus, the well-known single-step operator associated with a normal derivative is single-valued, and its fixed points can be found by well-established means. It is shown how fixed …

It is common knowledge that relational calculus and even SQL are not expressive enough to express recursive queries such as the transitive closure.
