Chemical And Toxicological Characterization Of The Lower Mobjack Bay, York River, Virginia Segment Of The Chesapeake Bay, Morris H. Roberts Jr., Mark A. Richards, Peter F. Delisle

Reports

The Chesapeake Bay segment called Lower Mobjack Bay Lower York River Virginia was found to have insufficient data to characterize in 1999. Therefore this area was selected for a chemical, toxicological, benthic community characterization study of the sediments in 2002. The segment was divided into 3 strata: the lower York River, the Poquoson River, and Back River, each with 4 randomly selected stations. Samples were collected in October 2002 for evaluation of conditions.

There were few significant chemical exceedances of the ER-L or ER-M in the three strata and no toxicologically effects from exposure to sediment samples from any stratum. …

Benthic Algae Control Sediment-Water Column Fluxes Of Organic And Inorganic Nitrogen Compounds In A Temperate Lagoon, Ac Tyler, Kj Mcglathery, Iris C. Anderson

VIMS Articles

Coastal lagoons are a common land-margin feature worldwide and function as an important filter for nutrients entering from the watershed. The shallow nature of lagoons leads to dominance by benthic autotrophs, which can regulate benthic-pelagic coupling. Here we demonstrate that both microalgae and macroalgae are important in controlling dissolved inorganic as well as organic nitrogen (DIN and DON) fluxes between the sediments and the water column. Fluxes of nitrogen (NH4+, NO3-, DON, urea, and dissolved free and combined amino acids [DFAA, DCAA]) and O-2 were measured from October 1998 through August 1999 in sediment cores collected from Hog Island Bay, …

An Experimental Evaluation Of The Effects Of Scale On Oyster Reef Restoration, Mark W. Luckenbach, Paige G. Ross Oct 2003

An Experimental Evaluation Of The Effects Of Scale On Oyster Reef Restoration, Mark W. Luckenbach, Paige G. Ross

Reports

We investigated the effects of spatial scale, ranging from 10’s of meters to several km’s, on the development of oyster populations and other reef-associated organisms during the early stage of reef restoration. Employing a block design, experimental reefs were constructed at four sites in the lower Rappahannock River, VA. We tested the effects of sites (scale ≈ 1 – 10 km), reef sizes (scale ≈ 100 m) and locations within reef (scale ≈ 10 m) on the settlement, survival and growth of oysters and on the abundance, biomass, species richness and diversity of developing communities utilizing the reefs.

The project …

Climatic Warming And Accompanying Changes In The Ecological Regime Of The Black Sea During 1990s, T Oguz, T Cokacar, P Malanotte-Rizzoli, Hw Ducklow Sep 2003

Climatic Warming And Accompanying Changes In The Ecological Regime Of The Black Sea During 1990s, T Oguz, T Cokacar, P Malanotte-Rizzoli, Hw Ducklow

VIMS Articles

The Black Sea ecosystem is shown to experience abrupt shifts in its all trophic levels from primary producers to apex predators in 1995 - 1996. It arises as a manifestation of concurrent changes in its physical climate introduced by intensive warming of its surface waters as well as abrupt increases in the mean sea level and the net annual mean fresh water flux. The warming is evident in the annual-mean sea surface temperature (SST) data by a continuous rise at a rate of similar to 0.25 degreesC per year, following a strong cooling phase in 1991 - 1993. The most …

Modeling Sediment Transport In The York River : Final Report, Jerome P.-Y. Maa Sep 2003

Modeling Sediment Transport In The York River : Final Report, Jerome P.-Y. Maa

Reports

Numerical simulation on the formation of an Estuarine Turbidity Maximum (ETM) is a difficult task because of the incomplete knowledge on cohesive sediment transport. For example, it is difficult to well simulate the erosion process when the bed erosion properties are only poorly known. It is also hard to simulate the settling process when the bulk density and size of suspended sediment flocs are changing with the ambient environments.

Despite of the difficulties, some processes can be parametricalized, even not perfectly, to make the simulation results close to observed. In this project, we demonstrated the possibility of using a constant …

Arts & Sciences Articles

We consider a dynamical system given by an area-preserving map on a two-dimensional phase plane and consider a one-dimensional line of initial conditions within this plane. We record the number of iterates it takes a trajectory to escape from a bounded region of the plane as a function along the line of initial conditions, forming an “escape-time plot.” For a chaotic system, this plot is in general not a smooth function, but rather has many singularities at which the escape time is infinite; these singularities form a complicated fractal set. In this article we prove the existence of regular repeated …

Geometry And Topology Of Escape. Ii. Homotopic Lobe Dynamics, K. A. Mitchell, J. P. Handley, John B. Delos, Stephen Knudson

Arts & Sciences Articles

We continue our study of the fractal structure of escape-time plots for chaotic maps. In the preceding paper, we showed that the escape-time plot contains regular sequences of successive escape segments, called epistrophes, which converge geometrically upon each end point of every escape segment. In the present paper, we use topological techniques to: (1) show that there exists a minimal required set of escape segments within the escape-time plot; (2) develop an algorithm which computes this minimal set; (3) show that the minimal set eventually displays a recursive structure governed by an “Epistrophe Start Rule:” a new epistrophe is spawned …

Penetration Of Anthropogenic Carbon Into Organic Particles Of The Deep Ocean, Erm Druffel, Je Bauer, S Griffin, J Hwang Jul 2003

Penetration Of Anthropogenic Carbon Into Organic Particles Of The Deep Ocean, Erm Druffel, Je Bauer, S Griffin, J Hwang

VIMS Articles

] In the late 1980s, bomb C-14 was present in suspended particulate organic carbon (POC) from the North Central Pacific (NCP) and Sargasso Sea ( SS) throughout most of the water column, demonstrating that deep POC had exchanged with atmospheric CO2 in the past 30 years. Upon reoccupation of these sites in 1999 and 2000, respectively, we observed that the delta(13)C values of suspended POC were lower than those measured a decade earlier. This demonstrates that anthropogenic CO2 from fossil fuel and biomass burning has penetrated a major organic matter pool in the deep ocean. Delta(14)C measured in the suspended …

Monitoring Relative Abundance Of American Shad In Virginia’S Rivers 2002 Annual Report, John E. Olney Apr 2003

Monitoring Relative Abundance Of American Shad In Virginia’S Rivers 2002 Annual Report, John E. Olney

Reports

Concern about the decline in landings of American shad (Alosa sapidissima) along the Atlantic coast prompted the development of an interstate fisheries management plan (FMP) under the auspices of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Management Program (ASMFC 1999). Legislation enables imposition of federal sanctions on fishing in those states that fail to comply with the FMP. To be in compliance, coastal states are required to implement and maintain fishery-dependent and fisheryindependent monitoring programs as specified by the FMP. For Virginia, these requirements include spawning stock assessments, the collection of biological data on the spawning run (e.g., age-structure, sex ratio, spawning …

Status Of The Major Oyster Diseases In Virginia 2002 A Summary Of The Annual Monitoring Program, Lisa M. Ragone Calvo, Eugene M. Burreson

Reports

Samples collected monthly from the upper James River sites from January through May showed a decline in P. marinus prevalence during the 4 winter and spring following a typical annual pattern; however, annual minimums were atypically high, particularly at Point of Shoals and Wreck Shoal (12-44%). Unusually high salinity conditions and warm winter temperatures promoted high overwintering survival of the pathogen and an early onset of the disease in the summer months. Perkinsus marinus prevalence increased to 100% at all four of the upper river stations and record high infection intensities were observed at Deepwater Shoal and Horsehead Rock. It …
