Observations across the continental shelf offshore from New Jersey in late summer 1976 show an intrusion of saline water at the mid level of the water column across the shelf edge front, which appears in density only as an offshore thickening of the pycnocline. This internal density field produces horizontal pressure gradient forces within the pycnocline in the onshore direction. These forces, in the linearized equation of motion with a constant eddy viscosity, drive a circulation which resembles a double Ekman spiral for internal pressure vertical distributions which are thin with respect to the Ekman depth. In its report to the Governor and the General Assembly of Virginia (Senate Document No. 4, Commonwealth of Virginia, 1979), the Coastal Erosion Abatement Commission found that "there is a need to locate sources of sand supplies for rebuilding public beaches. This manuscript discusses the results of the first two and one half years of a three-year study designed to determine the present state of xenobiotic compounds in the Chesapeake Bay. It shows that polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are the most frequently encountered compounds and are the most abundant. Concentrations are highest in the Northern Bay with several sources implicated. During this study an apparent dumping of the pesticide, DDT, occurred. Either the quantity disposed of was small enough or the assimulation capacity was large enough that no adverse effects were noted. The detection by us of 6-phenyldodecane in bottom sediments of …

The conventional quantum-mechanical formulation of near-adiabatic collision theory is known to have a number of defects. These defects arise because the usual description does not account for the displacement of electronic states with moving nuclei, or for the change of momentum of the electron as it jumps from one moving nucleus to the other. The purpose of this series of papers is to develop an improved theory, in which such effects are taken into account. In this paper, we show that displacement and momentum-transfer effects can be incorporated into the theory in a very simple way, provided that the wave …

More sediment, nutrients and pollutants are discharged into an estuary during a few days of flood inflow than during many months or years of average inflow (Meade, 1972; Schubel, 1977), but few observations document the sedimentary response of an estuary to high freshwater inflow. Such inflows are usually unexpected and estuarine water charact~ristics change too rapidly to permit systematic measurements. Moreover, the expenditure of effort and number of sampling vessels required on short notice is beyond the resources of a single research group or institute. The dynamics of the Chesapeake Bay plume have been studied by examination of 81 dates of Landsat images with color additive enhancement and single-band density slicing. The "plume" was interpreted from surface turbidity discontinuties as revealed in images from multispectral scanner (MSS) bands 4-7. Results show that the Chesapeake Bay plume usually frequents the Virginia coast south of the Bay mouth. Wind and tide vectors are the principal variables affecting the plume dynamics. Southwestern (compared to northern) winds spread and disperse the plume easterly over a large area. Ebb tide images (compared to flood tide images) show a more dispersed …

This review deals with quantitative descriptions of electronic transitions in atom-atom and ion-atom collisions. In one type of description, the nuclear motion is treated classically or semiclassically, and a wave function for the electrons satisfies a time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Expansion of this wave function in a suitable basis leads to time-dependent coupled equations. The role played by electron-translation factors in this expansion is noted, and their effects upon transition amplitudes are discussed. In a fully quantum-mechanical framework there is a wave function describing the motion of electrons and nuclei. Expansion of this wave function in a basis which spans the …

Historical records and data obtained during the Superflux experiments are used to describe the temporal and spatial variations of the effluent waters of Chesapeake Bay. The alongshore extent of the plume resulting from variations of fresh water discharge into the Bay and the effects of wind are illustrated. Variations of the cross-sectional configuration of the plume over portions of a tidal cycle and results of a rapid-underway water sampling system are discussed.

The escape of Kepone into the James River estuary, Virginia, for more than nine years produced widespread contamination of the sediments with important ecological consequences. The pollutant extended seaward more than 100 km from its source and contaminated an estimated 31 million tonnes of sediment to depths of more than 60 cm. Kepone spread through the food chain and to every segment of the environment from marshes to the channel floor.

The community metabolism of the waters in the vicinity of C. P. Crane electric power generating station is reported for two seasonal periods in 1979. The early autumn period (October) is generally characterized by warm water temperatures (20°C) and an insolation period of 11 hours; the late autumn period (December) is generally characterized by cold water temperatures (4-6°C) and an insolation period of approximately 9 hours. The platyhelminth, Udonella, lives on parasitic copepod crustaceans and, according to the present system of classification belongs to monogenetic trematodes (Monogena) among which it is usually placed in the group Monopisthocotylea (Fuhrmann, 1928; Bychowsky, 1937; Dawes, 1946; Sproston, 1946). However, the morphology of Udonella has not yet been studied thoroughly by anyone, and a number of unusual features of the structure, ontogenesis and biology of this form cause doubts with regard to its belonging to the Monogena.

In the event radionuclides are accidentally introduced into an estuary, many isotopes would become adsorbed on suspended particles of clay or silt; others would be incorporated into living cellular material (Caritt and Goodgal, 1954; Rice and Willis, 1959). Oysters and other filter feeders in these estuaries are capable of filtering from suspension large quantities of the suspended solids, as well as the larger living cellular material (Haven and Morales-Alamo, 1966a). Ingested material along with the associated radionuclides would be voided as compacted fecal strings or pellets (biodeposits). Movement of Atlantic Water into the Kara Sea is controlled by the bathymetry which funnels the inflow up three canyons along the eastern margin of the Svyataya Anna Trough. Mixing of the warm, saline Atlantic Water in these canyons with the considerable summer outflow of the Ob-Yenisey rivers results in the formation of Arctic Bottom Water and due to the presence and cooling by ice, in the formation of Arctic Surface Water. Both of these water masses then exit the Kara Sea as deep and shallow countercurrents to the incoming Atlantic Water. The northernmost canyon allows some Atlantic Water to …

Southwestern (compared to northern) winds spread the plume easterly over a large area. Ebb tide images (compared to flood tide images) show a more dispersed plume. Bacterial populations in Chesapeake Bay and contiguous shelf waters are significant to such essential processes as mineralization, nutrient recycling, degradation of pollutants and biomass production. However, our understanding of such dynamic relationships of physical and chemical factors to bacterial biomass and activities in Chesapeake Bay plume waters is limited. The availability of synoptic hydrographic (and remotely sensed physical-chemical) data obtained simultaneously with measurement of of microbial biomass and activity presented an opportunity to examine such relationships.

The Ware River Study is one of five small watershed projects sponsored by the EPA Chesapeake Bay Program. These projects are designed to provide data on nutrient and organic loadings entering the Bay over the wide range of topographies, climates, and land uses which occupy its watershed. Each provides information on a particular geographic segment of the Bay region. In particular, the Ware study is intended to document special characteristics of runoff from low relief coastal plain environments, and to document their impacts on a small estuarine receiving water.

As the world demand for coal has increased, the number of colliers arriving at Hampton Roads, Virginia, to load coal has exceeded the ability of the port to supply the demand. As a result, a substantial backlog of ships waiting to load coal is presently taxing the anchorage capacity of the harbor. A recent estimate is that 130 ships are waiting about 38 days each for their turn at the loading factl1t1es. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur. Shells planted just before the period of maximum set have the best chance of getting a good strike.
