Connections Between Eruption Style And Magmatic Reservoir Evolution: Insights From Augustine Volcano, Alaska, Usa, Mahinaokalani G. Robbins

At a single volcano, eruptive behavior can change through time as the plumbing system evolves. Augustine Volcano, a frequently active intermediate stratovolcano in the Alaska-Aleutian arc (USA), is an ideal setting to investigate magma reservoir processes due to its frequent modern and Holocene eruption history. Its most recent 2006 CE eruption included mixed effusive and moderately explosive (VEI 3) events and has been studied in detail. Proximal fall deposits from this eruption were generally mixed fine ash to lapilli with variable thickness, but typically ~5 cm on the island (Wallace et al., 2010). The eruption behavior of a volcano is intrinsically linked to magmatic evolution. Augustine Volcano is an active stratovolcano in the Aleutian Arc (AK, USA), showing stratigraphic evidence that eruptions before 1,800 C.E. were more explosive, producing thick pumice deposits, compared to the six eruptions observed in the last 200 years. Tephra B, an understudied ~400-year-old pumice fall unit, represents the last more explosive style eruption at Augustine - making it ideal for studying how changes in magmatic evolution can result in changes in eruption style. Petrology And Tectonic Evolution Of The Bowers Supergroup Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, Ray (Ray Joseph) Robert Jr.

The Bowers Supergroup of northern Victoria Land, Antarctica is at least 6.5 km thick and consists of Solidarity, Molar, and Glasgow Formations of the Middle Cambrian Sledgers Group; Middle to late Cambrian Mariner Group; and Middle Ordovician Leap Year Group. The Solidarity Formation is at least 0.4 km thick and consists of submarine tholeiites. The Molar Formation is up to 2.7 km thick and consists of slope-facies turbidites in its southwesternmost extent and shelf-facies sediments in its northeasternmost extent. Sediment provenance was the Glasgow Formation and a continental landmass lying northeast of the southwestern sloping Bowers basin. The Glasgow Formation …

Sedimentary Petrology, Depositional Environment, And Tectonic Implications Of The Upper Eocene Quimper Sandstone And Marrowstone Shale, Northeastern Olympic Peninsula, Washington, William E. (William Ernst) Rauch

The Upper Eocene (Refugian) Quimper Sandstone and overlying Marrowstone Shale document approximately 300 meters of sediment deposited in a tectonically active, shallow marine area during a transgression. The Quimper Sandstone and Marrowstone Shale can be roughly divided into three facies, representing deposition from outer shore face and inner shelf to offshore or outer shelf.

Petrographic analysis of the Quimper Sandstone and Marrowstone Shale indicates geography and hydrodynamic conditions were responsible for a slight petrologic trend in composition such as more feldspar and lithic grains in the lower energy facies. Geology And Petrology Of The Lake Ann Stock And Associated Rocks, Eric William James

The Lake Ann stock is a two pyroxene quartz monzodiorite to granodiorite epizonal intrusive emplaced into the Shuksan thrust fault in the latest Pliocene. It is similar to other Late Tertiary Cascade intrusives in mineralogy, texture, chemistry, and setting. These similarities are attributable to near surface emplacement, quick cooling and magmatic arc setting. Epizonal emplacement is indicated by fine, equigranular textures, granophyre, late stage alteration, late miarolitic dikes, plagioclase resorbed by alkali feldspar, and low pressure contact metamorphic assemblages. Temperature of emplacement was between 600°C and 925°C; pressure was less than 2 kb. Chemistry of individual samples and variation diagrams …

The Petrology, Petrography, And Geochemistry Of The Black Jack Breccia Pipe, Silver Star Plutonic Complex, Skamania County, Washington, Robert H. Birk

Tourmaline-bearing breccia pipes are associated with late stage Tertiary porphyritic intrusive rocks in the Silver Star Plutonic Complex.

Whole-rock geochemical analysis of rocks from the complex show a silica vs. alumina/(K2O + Na2O + CaO) trend (Feiss, 1978) toward geochemical conditions favorable for porphyry copper-type mineralization. Copper present in diorite, quartz diorite, and quartz diorite porphyry rocks probably entered silicates, whereas copper formed porphyry copper-type mineralization in the more felsic granodiorite and granodiorite porphyry intrusions.

Optical, x-ray, and chemical analyses indicate two distinct populations of tourmaline present in the breccia pipes; an early "Hemlock Ridge-type" which …

Detailed geologic mapping of rocks in the upper stratigraphic levels of the Fidalgo ophiolite Indicates that keratophyres and spilites are interbedded with tuffaceous sediments, sedimentary breccias, and graywacke. Sedimentary breccias containing plutonlc rock fragments as well as volcanic rock fragments are common. The graywackes were derived from a volcanic source area. Radiolaria In the tuffaceous sediments indicate a depositional age of Lower Kimmeridgian to Upper Valanginian.

Compared to the stratigraphy and petrology of other ophiolites and present-day tectonic environments, the Fidalgo Complex most closely resembles that of ancient and modern island-arc sequences.

Vedder Mountain lies in Washington state and British Columbia on the western flank of the North Cascades. Metamorphic rocks, which comprise most of the western half of the mountain, can be divided into two separate and distinct units. The southern unit is composed of foliated and non-foliated hornblende-plagioclase gabbro with minor serpentinite and pyroxenite. Most of the gabbroic rocks are sheared and altered and exhibit a lower greenschist facies metamorphism overprinted by a subsequent prehnite-pumpellyite facies metamorphism.
