Measure And Integration, Jose L. Menaldi
Measure And Integration, Jose L. Menaldi
Mathematics Faculty Research Publications
Abstract measure and integration, with theory and (solved) exercises is developed. Parts of this book can be used in a graduate course on real analysis.
Distributions And Function Spaces, Jose L. Menaldi
Distributions And Function Spaces, Jose L. Menaldi
Mathematics Faculty Research Publications
Beginning with a quick recall on measure and integration theory, basic concepts on (a) Function Spaces, (b) Schwartz Theory of Distributions, and (c) Sobolev and Besov Spaces are developed. Moreover, only a few number of (solved) exercises are given. Parts of this book can be used in a graduate course on real analysis.

A thorough assessment of aquatic nonindigenous species’ risk facilitates successful monitoring and prevention activities. However, species- and vector-specific information is often limited and difficult to synthesize across a single risk framework. To address this need, we developed an assessment framework capable of estimating the potential for introduction, establishment, and impact by aquatic nonindigenous species from diverse spatial origins and taxonomic classification, in novel environments. Our model builds on previous approaches, while taking on a new perspective for evaluation across species, vectors and stages to overcome the limitations imposed by single species and single vector assessments. We applied this globally-relevant framework …

Study region: The Cordoriri watershed and vicinity in the Cordillera Real, Bolivia, South America
Study focus: Recent warming has contributed to substantial reductions in glaciers in many regions around the globe. Melting of these glaciers alters the timing and magnitude of stream flows and diminishes water resources accumulated in past climates. These changes are especially acute in regions with small glaciers and problematic for populations relying on surface water. In Bolivia, most glaciers are less than 0.5 km2 and about 2 million people draw water in part from glacier-fed watersheds. Sparse monitoring, however, has limited estimates of …

Gene-by-environment (GxE) interactions determine common disease risk factors and biomedically relevant complex traits. However, quantifying how the environment modulates genetic effects on human quantitative phenotypes presents unique challenges. Environmental covariates are complex and difficult to measure and control at the organismal level, as found in GWAS and epidemiological studies. An alternative approach focuses on the cellular environment using in vitro treatments as a proxy for the organismal environment. These cellular environments simplify the organism-level environmental exposures to provide a tractable influence on subcellular phenotypes, such as gene expression. Expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) mapping studies identified GxE interactions in response …
On Some Optimal Stopping Problems With Constraint, J. L. Menaldi, M. Robin
On Some Optimal Stopping Problems With Constraint, J. L. Menaldi, M. Robin
Mathematics Faculty Research Publications
We consider the optimal stopping problem of a Markov process {xt : t ≤ 0} when the controller is allowed to stop only at the arrival times of a signal, that is, at a sequence of instants {τn : n ≤ 1} independent of {xt : t ≤ 0}. We solve in detail this problem for general Markov–Feller processes with compact state space when the interarrival times of the signal are independent identically distributed random variables. In addition, we discuss several extensions to other signals and to other cases of state spaces. These results …
Characterization Of Α‑Synuclein Multimer Stoichiometry In Complex Biological Samples By Electrophoresis, Bryan A. Killinger, Anna Moszczynska
Characterization Of Α‑Synuclein Multimer Stoichiometry In Complex Biological Samples By Electrophoresis, Bryan A. Killinger, Anna Moszczynska
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
The aberrant aggregation of α-synuclein in the brain is a hallmark of Parkinson’s disease (PD). In vivo soluble α-synuclein occurs as a monomer and several multimers, the latter of which may be important for the biological function of α-synuclein. Currently, there is a lack of reproducible methods to compare α-synuclein multimer abundance between complex biological samples. Here we developed a method, termed “multimer-PAGE,” that combines in-gel chemical cross-linking with several common electrophoretic techniques to measure the stoichiometry of soluble α-synuclein multimers in brain tissue lysates. Results show that soluble α-synuclein from the rat brain exists as several high molecular weight …
A Counterexample For Lightning Flash Modules Over E(E1,E2), David Benson, Robert R. Bruner
A Counterexample For Lightning Flash Modules Over E(E1,E2), David Benson, Robert R. Bruner
Mathematics Faculty Research Publications
We give a counterexample to Theorem 5 in Section 18.2 of Margolis’ book, “Spectra and the Steenrod Algebra” and make remarks about the proofs of some later theorems in the book that depend on it. The counterexample is a module which does not split as a sum of lightning flash modules and free modules.

The Mathematics Of Scientific Research: Scientometrics, Citation Metrics, And Impact Factors, Clayton Hayes
Library Scholarly Publications
This talk will consist of an introduction to the rationale behind the establishment of the field of Scientometrics, which attempts to measure and analyze the body of research done in the sciences. This is primarily through analyzing the connections between scientific journals, articles, and authors. I will cover the foundational works of Price and Garfield in the fields of citation networks and impact factor, respectively, and will give some historical context for these developments. I will also speak briefly on more recent developments in these areas, such as the Eigenfactor, author citation metrics, and (time permitting) alternative metrics.
