Parallel research programs encompassing the hydrodynamics and geochemistry have been undertaken in Oatley Bay, a small urban estuary that is a lower tributary to the Georges River in Southern Sydney Using field data and a simple numerical model, the regimes of flow effecting circulation in Oatley Bay have been determined. The efficiency of flushing and the subsequent fate of conservative pollutants are discussed. The field data comprised bathymetry, tides, drogue tracking and dye tests, the latter enabling the calibration of the model under different environmental conditions. We present a model study of carbon monoxide for 1988-1997 using the GEOS-Chem 3-D model driven by assimilated meteorological data, with time-varying emissions from biomass burning and from fossil fuel and industry, overhead ozone columns, and methane. The hydroxyl radical is calculated interactively using a chemical parameterization to capture chemical feedbacks. We document the inventory for fossil fuels/industry and discuss major uncertainties and the causes of differences with other inventories that give significantly lower emissions. We find that emissions hardly change from 1988 to 1997, as increases in Asia are offset by decreases elsewhere. The model reproduces the 20% decrease …

The acquisition of complex software intensive systems is fraught with significant risks and often incurs schedule delays, cost overruns and reduced functionality when the product is finally delivered. This paper presents a model to assess the effectiveness of software intensive acquisitions, founded on the premise that the solution depends on a series of transformations that transform input products in one domain into output products in another domain. Transformations are performed by people, and require knowledge and skills pertinent to both input and output domains. Ideally, products should be transformed without distortions resulting into the desirable solution. In reality, distortions occur …

In vivo models of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) elucidate important mechanisms of chronic inflammation. Complex intestinal responses to food components create a unique “fingerprint” discriminating health from disease. Five-week-old IL10−/− and C57BL/6J (C57; control) mice were inoculated orally with complex intestinal microflora (CIF) and/or pure cultures of Enterococcus faecalis and E. faecalis (EF) aiming for more consistent inflammation of the intestinal mucosa. Inoculation treatments were compared to non-inoculated IL10−/− and C57 mice, either kept in specific pathogen free (SPF) or conventional conditions (2×5 factorial design). The CFD modeling of two dimensional multiphase ows is a useful tool in industry, although accurate modeling itself remains a difficult task. One of the difficulties is to track the complicated topological deformations of the interfaces between di erent phases. This paper describes a marker-particle method designed to track fluid interfaces for fluid ows of at least three phases. The interface-tracking scheme presented in this paper is the first part of a series of papers presenting our complete model based on a one-field Godunov marker-particle projection scheme (GMPPS). Semantic indexing of a video document is a process that performs the identification of elementary and complex semantic units in the indexed document in order to create a semantic index defined as a mapping of semantic units into the sequences of video frames. An enterprise system consists of a number of components or building blocks. It is common to use views or models of the enterprise that contain a selection of these components (dependent on the intended usage of the model). The premise is that if these views are considered systems in their own right then the total enterprise system is actually a system‐of‐systems. The interseasonal variability of stratomesospheric CO is reported from Poker Flat, Alaska, using spectra from a ground-based Fourier Transform Spectrometer (gb-FTS) for the time period from 2000 to 2004. The CO spectra were analyzed using an optimal estimation technique that separates the tropospheric and stratospheric/mesospheric components into partial columns. The distribution of CO in the polar winter is such that the gb-FTS retrieved partial column is weighted to the mesosphere. The gb-FTS data are compared with measurements of partial column CO from the Sub-Millimeter Radiometer on board the Odin satellite and shown to be in very good agreement despite the …
