Network Design Problems (NDPs) can model many real-life problems in a wide range of domains from transportation, supply chain management and logistics, through to the design of telecommunication networks and airline routes. NDPs are generally tackled through employing sophisticated exact methods and (meta-)heuristics. Exact methods mainly include mixed integer programming, column generation, and branch and bound techniques. Metaheuristics, as the second strategy of solving NDPs, can comprise any construction methods, local searches (point-based), evolutionary (population-based) techniques as well as their hybrids. To satisfy growing travel demand and reduce traffic congestion, the continuous network design problem (CNDP) is often proposed to optimize road network performance by the expansion of road capacity. A high performance Li3V2(PO4)3 cathode material for lithium ion batteries was synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method followed by a post annealing process. The synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis results confirmed that single-phase Li3V2(PO4)3 with monoclinic structure was obtained. Scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope images revealed that the as-prepared Li3V 2(PO4)3 was composed of nanowires and microsized particles. Electrochemical results demonstrated that the Li 3V2(PO4)3 electrode measured at 10 C after 500 cycles can deliver discharge capacities of 85.4 mAh g-1 and 103.4 mAh g-1, with a capacity retention of 99.3% and 95.9%, in the voltage ranges of 3.0-4.3 …

Hydrogels are polymer networks swollen in water. Because of their soft and wet nature, and their ability to show large volume changes, hydrogels can be useful in many biomedical and actuator applications. In these applications, it is crucial to tune the mechanical and physical properties of a hydrogel in a controllable manner. The TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) will be part of ESA’s Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) satellite platform scheduled for launch in 2015. TROPOMI will monitor methane and carbon monoxide concentrations in the Earth’s atmosphere by measuring spectra of back-scattered sunlight in the short-wave infrared (SWIR).

High Speed Rail or HSR with electric passenger trains using steel wheels on steel rails with maximum operating speeds of 250km/h or more is now operational in 12 countries. It is now under review in Australia. The paper considers energy use on the 10 top routes of the Melbourne-Sydney and Sydney-Brisbane corridors and finds that HSR was in place by 2020, HSR could reduce the use of aviation fuel by over 450 million litres each year. External costs and Sydney airport issues are also noted.

Network reconfiguration in distribution system is realized by changing the status of sectionalizing switches, and is usually done for the purpose of loss reduction. Loss reduction can result in substantial benefits for a utility. The maze traversal problem involves finding the shortest distance to the goal from any position in a maze. Such maze solving problems have been an interesting challenge in computational intelligence. Previous work has shown that grid-to-grid neural networks such as the cellular simultaneous recurrent neural network (CSRN) can effectively solve simple maze traversing problems better than other iterative algorithms such as the feedforward multi layer perceptron (MLP). The electrical resistance of carbon nanotube networks (NNs) prepared from combinations of gellan gum, xanthan gum, Triton X-100, SWNT and MWNT is reported. It is demonstrated that the NN conductivity can be obtained by analysing the resistance of two overlapping NN as a function of their overlap distance. Unexpectedly, the connectivity between two overlapping NN was found to scale with the electrical conductivity over 4 orders of magnitude. Insights into the dependence of inter-NN contact on applied pressure were obtained.

The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) produces precise measurements of the column average dry-air mole fractions of CO2, CO, CH4, N2O and H2O at a variety of sites worldwide. These observations rely on spectroscopic parameters that are not known with sufficient accuracy to compute total columns that can be used in combination with in situ measurements. The TCCON must therefore be calibrated to World Meteorological Orga-nization (WMO) in situ trace gas measurement scales. A test-scale wireless chemical sensor network (WCSN) has been deployed within a controlled Environmental Chamber (EC). The combined signals from the WCSN were used to initiate a controllable response to the detected chemical event. When a particular sensor response pattern was obtained, a purging cycle was initiated. Sensor data were continuously checked against user-defined action limits, to determine if a chemical event had occurred. An acidic contaminant was used to demonstrate the response of the sensor network. A recently developed low-cost light emitting diode (LED) chemical sensing technique is integrated with a Mica2Dot wireless communications platform to form a deployable wireless chemical event indicator network. The operation of the colorimetric sensing node has been evaluated to determine its reproducibility and limit of detection for an acidic airborne contaminant. This paper describes the statistical analysis of annual trends in long term datasets of greenhouse gas measurements taken over ten or more years. The analysis technique employs a bootstrap resampling method to determine both the long-term and intra-annual variability of the datasets, together with the uncertainties on the trend values.

We present work on the development and testing of a low-cost wireless chemical sensor network (WCSN) for monitoring irritant/toxic gases in the environment. The WCSN used in this work takes advantage of recent advances in low power wireless communication platforms and uses colorimetric sensors to detect the presence of certain target gases. This sensor network adopts a star configuration and performs one way RF communications from individual sensor nodes to the base-station. Various metal cations in physiological solutions interact with lipid headgroups in biological membranes, having an impact on their structure and stability, yet little is known about the molecular-scale dynamics of the lipid-ion interactions. Here we directly investigate the extensive lipid-ion interaction networks and their transient formation between headgroups in a dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine bilayer under physiological conditions. The spatial distribution of ion occupancy is imaged in real space by frequency modulation atomic force microscopy with sub-Angstrom resolution.

Statistical service has been proposed for service differentiation networks to improve resource utilization. However, it has remained in a challenge to compute end-to-end statistical service bounds for aggregates of regulated flows in a network. In this paper, we develop a generalized statistical traffic envelope, global statistical envelope, which covers not only aggregated traffic of regulated flows, but also a large variety of traffic sources. Based on this characterization, we derive statistical bounds on delay and backlog in a service curve network. Utilising the standard AS/NZS61000.3.6 to carry out a harmonic allocation to a load in a transmission system requires detailed knowledge of the location and magnitude of every future load. Given that the size of the load at a bus in a transmission system could conceivably be from zero up to around thirty percent of the fault level, such knowledge is unlikely to be available with any degree of certainty. World-wide multiplayer games present several scalability challenges for large-scale deployment. In recent years, significant research has been devoted to scaling in terms of number of players so that the same virtual world can accommodate larger number of simultaneous avatars. A possible solution is to use grid computing techniques for distribution of processing over a cluster or a distributed set of servers. Scalability with respect to geographical distribution of players is another challenge. Large geographical distances between players introduces propagation delays which are impossible to avoid. A new method of texture classification comprising two processing stages, namely a low-level evolutionary feature extraction based on Gabor wavelets and a high-level neural network based pattern recognition, is proposed. The design of these stages is motivated by the processes involved in the human visual system: low-level receptors responsible for early vision processing and the high-level cognition. A new method for texture classification is proposed. It is composed of two processing stages, namely, a low level evolutionary feature extraction based on Gabor wavelets and a high level neural network based pattern recognition. This resembles the process involved in the human visual system. Gabor wavelets are exploited as the feature extractor. A neural network, Fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory (Fuzzy ART), acts as the high level decision making and recognition system.
