Associations Of Traffic Related Air Pollution With Physical Activity And Cardiorespiratory Health Outcomes In At-Risk Populations From El Paso, Texas, Juan Aguilera

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Exposure to air pollution from traffic-related emissions is a considerable preventable cause of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. However, the impacts on at-risk populations, such as children with asthma and low-income residents, are yet to be fully understood in the border city of El Paso, TX. This dissertation focused on the most common traffic-related pollutants which include particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3). The research described in this work provides an overview of air pollution measurements and shares insights from three different studies in our region.

People with asthma are more likely adversely affected by traffic …

High Performance Computing In Air Quality Models An Their Applications, Roberto A. Perea Jan 2015

High Performance Computing In Air Quality Models An Their Applications, Roberto A. Perea

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

High Performance Computing has become an important tool for many applications and services in the areas of Air Quality research. One important aspect is the use of computational technology in simulation and modeling of complex Air Quality models which makes it affordable in terms of data analysis, processing and speed. For this Dissertation, three projects using Air quality models were developed using high performance computing.

For the first project, ozone concentrations for the Paso del Norte Region are simulated using air quality models and compared against experimental data. For the second project, the Development of models and optimization of codes …

Evaluation Of Emission Control Strategies To Reduce Ozone Pollution In The Paso Del Norte Region Using A Photochemical Air Quality Modeling System, Victor Hugo Valenzuela Jan 2013

Evaluation Of Emission Control Strategies To Reduce Ozone Pollution In The Paso Del Norte Region Using A Photochemical Air Quality Modeling System, Victor Hugo Valenzuela

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Air pollution emissions control strategies to reduce ozone precursor pollutants are analyzed by applying a photochemical modeling system. Simulations of air quality conditions during an ozone episode which occurred in June, 2006 are undertaken by increasing or reducing area source emissions in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Two air pollutants are primary drivers in the formation of tropospheric ozone. Oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) undergo multiple chemical reactions under favorable meteorological conditions to form ozone, which is a secondary pollutant that irritates respiratory systems in sensitive individuals especially the elderly and young children.
