Linear Codes And Error-Correction, Karen Brown Jan 1994

Linear Codes And Error-Correction, Karen Brown

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The process of encoding information for transmission from one source to another is a vital process in many areas of science and technology. Whenever coded information is sent, there arises a certain possibility that an error will occur, either during transmission or in decoding. Therefore, it is imperative to develop methods to detect and correct errors in a code. The study of coding theory is a "new" area of mathematics which is relatively undeveloped.

This paper focuses on the properties of linear codes -and their corresponding methods of error-correction. To simplify the issue, only binary block codes are studied; hence …

A Partial "Squeezing Theorem" For A Particular Class Of Many-Valued Logics, Stephen Michael Walk Jan 1994

A Partial "Squeezing Theorem" For A Particular Class Of Many-Valued Logics, Stephen Michael Walk

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem to be studied for this thesis was that of whether the usual statement calculus is a suitable formal system for every many-valued logic in a particular collection of logics. The logics in question are those that fall between the usual two-valued logic and a modified form of the Lukasiewicz-Tarski three-valued logic.

Since this betweenness relationship was an original concept and appeared nowhere in the literature, the first goal in the research plan was to define this relationship precisely. Preliminary concepts included truth value mapping and forgivingness of logics, concepts that, like betweenness, are original to this paper and …

The Corrosive Effects Of Salt Spray On Electrolytic Zinc Plated Mechanical Fasteners: The Case Of Clear Chromate And Yellow Dichromate Coatings On Medium Carbon Plated Bolts, Souleymane Boukari Jan 1994

The Corrosive Effects Of Salt Spray On Electrolytic Zinc Plated Mechanical Fasteners: The Case Of Clear Chromate And Yellow Dichromate Coatings On Medium Carbon Plated Bolts, Souleymane Boukari

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between plating thickness and corrosion resistance of zinc coated medium carbon steel bolts under salt spray moisture conditions. Two types of zinc coatings were chosen for the study: the clear chromate zinc and the yellow dichromate zinc. One hundred and eighty 3/8-16 x 5 3/4 inch medium carbon steel bolts were selected for the test and divided into groups of 18. Two types of salt solution were used in the study: the low salt and the high salt. Bolts with various coatings tested with low salt concentration were composed of …

The Modeling Of Phosphorus Dynamics In A Lake System, Todd N. Swift Jan 1994

The Modeling Of Phosphorus Dynamics In A Lake System, Todd N. Swift

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

We have constructed a basic closed stock and flow model of lake phosphorus cycling that includes three stock concentrations: inorganic phosphorus, phosphorus in living organic material, and phosphorus in dead organic material. Stocks are connected by flows that are made stock dependent in a plausible manner. The model exhibits two equilibrium points, one stable and the other unstable, with an interesting crossover between them. Below a certain total phosphorus threshold, stable equilibrium is characterized by all of the phosphorus stock residing in the inorganic form, suggesting the collapse of the biological system. Above the threshold, this is not true. We …
