Lead Complexation By Humic Acids And Their Analogs: A Voltammetric Study, Spencer Steinberg, Vernon Hodge
Lead Complexation By Humic Acids And Their Analogs: A Voltammetric Study, Spencer Steinberg, Vernon Hodge
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research
© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Differential pulse polarography (DPP) was used to assess the interaction of Pb2+ with various humic acid analogs and several humic acids. DPP analysis demonstrated that the reduction peak maximum (Ep) for Pb2+ shifted to more negative values in the presence of humic acids and humic acid analogs. The observed Ep for Pb2+ in the presence of humic acids and humic acid analogs is influenced by ligand concentration, solution pH and Pb2+ concentration. Shifts in the Ep for Pb2+ are related to the reduction potential and can be rationalized using the Lingane …
Mobilization Of Toxic Elements From An Abandoned Manganese Mine In The Arid Metropolitan Las Vegas (Nv, Usa) Area, Ji Hye Park, Vernon Hodge, Shawn Gerstenberger, Krystyna Stave
Mobilization Of Toxic Elements From An Abandoned Manganese Mine In The Arid Metropolitan Las Vegas (Nv, Usa) Area, Ji Hye Park, Vernon Hodge, Shawn Gerstenberger, Krystyna Stave
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research
Active and abandoned mines may present health risks, especially to children, from environmental exposure to airborne chemical elements, such as Pb, As, and Mn. X-ray fluorescence analysis of tailings at the Three Kids Mine show they contain high levels of: Pb (15,300 mg/kg), As (3690 mg/kg), and Mn (153,000 mg/kg). Soil was sampled along eight transects, radiating from the dried tailings ponds. Concentrations of Mn and Pb to the NE are at background concentrations at 4.8 km, and, As and Sr at 3.2 km from the mine. Going SW to the City of Henderson, all elements are at background at …

Background: In 2007, a synthetic turf recreational field in Newark, New Jersey, was closed because lead was found in synthetic turf fibers and in surface dust at concentrations exceeding hazard criteria. Consequently, public health professionals across the country began testing synthetic turf to determine whether it represented a lead hazard. Currently, no standardized methods exist to test for lead in synthetic turf or to assess lead hazards.
Objectives: Our objectives were to increase awareness of potential lead exposure from synthetic turf by presenting data showing elevated lead in fibers and turf-derived dust; identify risk assessment uncertainties; recommend that federal and/or …
Integral Neutron Multiplicity Measurements From Cosmic Ray Interactions In Lead, Thomas E. Ward, Alexander A. Rimsky-Korsakov, Nikolai A. Kudryashev, Denis E. Beller
Integral Neutron Multiplicity Measurements From Cosmic Ray Interactions In Lead, Thomas E. Ward, Alexander A. Rimsky-Korsakov, Nikolai A. Kudryashev, Denis E. Beller
Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)
Sixty element 3He neutron multiplicity detector systems were designed, constructed and tested for use in cosmic ray experiments with a 30-cm cube lead target. A series of measurements were performed for the cosmic ray configuration at ground level (3 meters water equivalent, mwe), in the St. Petersburg metro tunnel (185 mwe), and in the Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland (583 and 1185 mwe). Anomalous coincidence events with charged cosmic ray particles at sea level produced events with 100-120 neutrons due possibly to the total disintegration of the Pb nucleus. These events were also detected at 185 mwe, but the particles …
The Migration Of Arsenic And Lead In Surface Sediments At Three Kids Mine Henderson, Nevada, Douglas Brian Sims
The Migration Of Arsenic And Lead In Surface Sediments At Three Kids Mine Henderson, Nevada, Douglas Brian Sims
Publications (WR)
This study focused on the distribution of arsenic and lead in surface sediments at Three Kids Mine in Henderson, Nevada. The mine site encompasses approximately 470 acres of desert and is situated above two developing communities (Lake Las Vegas and Calico Ridge) and the Las Vegas Valley's water source (Lake Mead).
Transport of arsenic and lead appears to have occurred within a limited range in both the eastern and western washes on the eastern and western sides of Three Kids Mine. Concentrations of arsenic range between 20 mg/kg (ppm) and 1130 mg/kg and between 20 mg/kg and 8400 mg/kg for …
