Probing The Electroweak Phase Transition With Exotic Higgs Decays, Marcela Carena, Jonathan Kozaczuk, Zhen Liu, Tong Ou, Michael J. Ramsey-Musolf, Jessie Shelton, Yikun Wang, Ke-Pan Xie

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

An essential goal of the Higgs physics program at the LHC and beyond is to explore the nature of the Higgs potential and shed light on the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking. An important class of models alter the thermal history of electroweak symmetry breaking from the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). This paper reviews the existence of a region of parameter space where a strong first-order electroweak phase transition is compatible with exotic decays of the SM-like Higgs boson. A dedicated search for exotic Higgs decays can actively explore this framework at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), while …

Search For The Higgs Boson Decay To A Pair Of Electrons In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, A. Tumasyan Feb 2023

Search For The Higgs Boson Decay To A Pair Of Electrons In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13 Tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

A search is presented for the Higgs boson decay to a pair of electrons (e+e) in proton-proton collisions at √ s = 13 TeV. The data set was collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The analysis uses event categories targeting Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion. The observed upper limit on the Higgs boson branching fraction to an electron pair is 3.0 × 10−4 (3.0 × 10−4 expected) at the 95% confidence level, which …

Search For New Particles In An Extended Higgs Sector With Four Bquarks In The Final State At √S=13tev, Cms Collaboration Nov 2022

Search For New Particles In An Extended Higgs Sector With Four Bquarks In The Final State At √S=13tev, Cms Collaboration

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

A search for a massive resonance X decaying to a pair of spin-0 bosons φ that themselves decay to pairs of bottom quarks, is presented. The analysis is restricted to the mass ranges mφ from 25 to 100GeVand mX from 1 to 3TeV. For these mass ranges, the decay products of each φ boson are expected to merge into a single large-radius jet. Jet substructure and flavor identification techniques are used to identify these jets. The search is based on CERN LHC proton-proton collision data at √s=13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector in 2016–2018, corresponding to an …

A search for neutral Higgs bosons decaying to tau pairs at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is performed using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−1 recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is sensitive to both the standard model Higgs boson and to the neutral Higgs bosons predicted by the minimal super symmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM). No excess of events is observed in the tau-pair invariant-mass spectrum. For a standard model Higgs boson in the mass range of 110–145 GeV upper limits at 95% confidence level (CL) on …

A search for the standard model Higgs boson (H) decaying to bb̅ when produced in association with weak vector bosons (V) is reported for the following modes: W(μν)H, W(eν)H, Z(μμ)H, Z(ee)H and Z(νν)H. The search is performed in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1, recorded by the CMS detector in proton–proton collisions at the LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. No significant excess of events above the expectation from background is observed. Upper limits on the V H production cross section times the …

A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb−1. Limits are set on the cross section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The analysis of the data excludes, at …

Results are presented from searches for the standard model Higgs boson in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 and 8 TeV in the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the LHC, using data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 5.1 fb−1 at 7 TeV and 5.3 fb−1 at 8 TeV. The search is performed in five decay modes: γγ, ZZ, W+W, τ+τ, and bb̅. An excess of events is observed above the expected background, with a local significance of 5.0 standard deviations, at a mass near 125 …
