High-Field Magnetoresistance Of Ordered Beta Brass , David J. Sellmyer, J. Ahn, J.-P. Jan Sep 1967

High-Field Magnetoresistance Of Ordered Beta Brass , David J. Sellmyer, J. Ahn, J.-P. Jan

David Sellmyer Publications

The magnetoresistance of several single-crystal specimens of ordered β-brass has been investigated in fields up to 150 kG. The purity of the samples is sufficiently high (ρ2954.2≃400) that the high-field condition is satisfied. The results indicate that ordered β-brass is an uncompensated metal and that its Fermi surface is multiply connected. Strong open orbits were observed when the field was in {110} or {100} planes, and this behavior is compatible with the Fermi-surface model predicted by augmented-plane-wave and Green's-function energy-band calculations. Evidence for the existence of higher-order open orbits and two-dimensional regions of open orbits is …

A Noteworthy Record Of The Swift Fox In Mcpherson County, Nebraska, Lawrence J. Blus, Glenn R. Sherman, John Henderson Aug 1967

A Noteworthy Record Of The Swift Fox In Mcpherson County, Nebraska, Lawrence J. Blus, Glenn R. Sherman, John Henderson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

An adult female swift fox (Vulpes velox) was killed by an automobile 1 mile E Ringgold, McPherson Co., Nebraska, on 25 March 1966. Standard external measurements (mm) of this specimen are: 723, 275, 132, 59, and weight, 2000 g. This record is approximately 80 miles south of the nearest occurrence listed by Jones (Univ. Kansas Publ., Mus. Nat. Hist., 16: 1-356, 1964) and appears to be the first verification of the occurrence of this fox in the Nebraska Sandhills, although specimens have been taken on all sides of this area. Jones (1964) indicated that this species may have …

Room-Temperature Second-Order Raman Spectra Of Csc1, Csbr, And Csi, A. M. Karo, John R. Hardy Aug 1967

Room-Temperature Second-Order Raman Spectra Of Csc1, Csbr, And Csi, A. M. Karo, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

The room-temperature Raman spectra of CsC1, CsBr, and CsI have been computed from a simple, combined density-of-states approximation. Calculations have been made for four different model potential functions and compared with experiment in the cases of CsBr and CsI. In this way it is found that one of the variations, called the DD(-) model, is the most satisfactory. The agreement with the observed spectra is surprisingly close when one considers that no allowance has been made for variations in the elements of the Raman polarizability tensor.

Evaluation Of The Dispersion Relations Of Photoproduction, Paul Finkler Jul 1967

Evaluation Of The Dispersion Relations Of Photoproduction, Paul Finkler

Paul Finkler Papers

A modification of the Omnes method is used to solve the singular integral equations for the 3-3 partialwave amplitudes of photoproduction. The effects of multipion production are assumed to be negligible. The method requires a knowledge of the phase at all energies. Consequently, it is necessary to treat the corresponding pion-nucleon scattering problem to determine the eBect of the high-energy behavior of the phase on the solution for the scattering amplitude at low energies. The sharply resonant nature of the problen suggests an approximation in the form of solution, rather than in the Born terms, which leads to relatively simple …

Anion Contributions To The Electrical Conductivity Of Alkali Chlorides, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly Jul 1967

Anion Contributions To The Electrical Conductivity Of Alkali Chlorides, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly

Robert G. Fuller Publications

The measured electrical conductivity of pure RbCl is separated into the usual anion and cation contributions with activation energies of 2.55 and 1.58 eV, respectively. By comparison with corresponding results for KC1 and NaCl it is found that the alkali-chloride anion and cation activation energies differ most for nearly equal anion and cation radii. We conclude from this anomalous trend that an extension of conventional theory is required.

F Band In X- And Electron-Irradiated Caf2, David A. Patterson, Robert Fuller Jun 1967

F Band In X- And Electron-Irradiated Caf2, David A. Patterson, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

This Letter reports an investigation using pulsed electron irradiation to determine if the low efficiency of F-band coloration in calcium fluoride is caused by the instability of the F center. No transient F centers were seen in times as short as 2 x 10-7 sec. It is concluded that the inherent efficiency of F-band coloration in CaF2 is small compared with similar processes in alkali halides and a possible reason for this is discussed.

Calcium fluoride has been extensively studied and is found to be more difficult to color than alkali halides and to have absorption …

Inelastic Collisions Of The Second Kind Between Electrons And Excited Mercury Atoms, Paul Burrow Jun 1967

Inelastic Collisions Of The Second Kind Between Electrons And Excited Mercury Atoms, Paul Burrow

Paul Burrow Publications

The relative cross section for inelastic collisions of the second kind between electrons and mercury atoms in the excited 3P1 state was measured as a function of electron energy. Excited atoms were produced by absorption of the 2537 Å resonance line from a mercury arc. A low-energy beam of electrons was produced using the retarding potential difference method. Scattered electrons which gained kinetic energy were detected by passing them through a potential barrier which reflected unscattered electrons. The data are in good agreement with the cross section computed by applying detailed balancing to the known cross section for …

A Theorem On Repeating Decimals, William G. Leavitt Jun 1967

A Theorem On Repeating Decimals, William G. Leavitt

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

It is well known that a real number is rational if and only if its decimal expansion is a repeating decimal. For example, 2/7 = .285714285714 . . . . Many students also know that if n/m is a rational number reduced to lowest terms (that is, n and m relatively prime), then the number of repeated digits (we call this the length of period) depends only on m. Thus all fractions with denominator 7 have length of period 6. A sharp-eyed student may also notice that when the period (that is, the repeating digits) for 2/7 is split …

A New Family Of Partially Balanced Incomplete Block Designs With Some Latin Square Design Properties, Dale M. Mesner Apr 1967

A New Family Of Partially Balanced Incomplete Block Designs With Some Latin Square Design Properties, Dale M. Mesner

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

An extensive family of two-class PBIB designs is defined in Section 1and given the title of NL designs. Several analogies of NL designs with Latin square type designs are discussed in Sections 1 and 2. Some of these designs have already appeared in scattered contexts. Section 3 gives a construction based on finite geometry for an infinite class of XL designs, and others can be constructed by methods to be taken up elsewhere. An extension to designs with more than two associate classes is indicated in Section 4.

The Current Status Of Wild Animal Rabies In California, George L. Humphrey Mar 1967

The Current Status Of Wild Animal Rabies In California, George L. Humphrey

Proceedings of the 3rd Vertebrate Pest Conference (1967)

During the 15-years 1952-1966, a total of 3504 cases of animal rabies were reported in California, an average of over 230 cases annually (Table 1). Of these 3504 cases, 2255 or nearly 65 percent were reported in wildlife species. An estimate sometimes used is that for every reported or recognized case of wild animal rabies, 10 cases probably occurred without recognition. Using the foregoing "rule-of-thumb", it can be hypothesized that during the 15-years 1952-1966, an estimated 22,600 or more cases of wildlife rabies occurred in California. The addition of the over 1200 cases of rabies reported in domestic animals during …

The Current Status Of Plague In California, Keith F. Murray Mar 1967

The Current Status Of Plague In California, Keith F. Murray

Proceedings of the 3rd Vertebrate Pest Conference (1967)

At the first Vertebrate Pest Control Conference in 1964, I traced the history of plague control in California and outlined a revised approach, based on newer concepts of plague ecology. In our state of relative ignorance, this required a number of unproved assumptions about plague occurrence in California that verged on crystal ball gazing. These were principally that (1) plague persists in relatively resistant rodent species in certain favorable locations, (2) ground squirrels and chipmunks experience periodic epizootics, but are not permanent reservoirs, (3) plague "foci" of the past were merely sites of conspicuous epizootics, they did not necessarily correspond …

Role Of The Agricultural Extension Service In Vertebrate Pest Control, Marvin D. Davis Mar 1967

Role Of The Agricultural Extension Service In Vertebrate Pest Control, Marvin D. Davis

Proceedings of the 3rd Vertebrate Pest Conference (1967)

Frankly, I often wonder what our role is in vertebrate pest control. It seems to me that we in A.E.S, are frequently treading in the "twilight zone" of pest control. This is because of the wide diversity of problems which arise within an area such as I represent. I feel it is most significant that our county was invited to cover the role of A.E.S. in vertebrate pest control and discuss the tremendous variations and considerations necessary to serve an urban/semi-urban to rural county. Those of you familiar with San Mateo County readily recognize the potential problems due to population …

Winter Starling Control In Idaho, Nevada, And Oregon, Homer S. Ford Mar 1967

Winter Starling Control In Idaho, Nevada, And Oregon, Homer S. Ford

Proceedings of the 3rd Vertebrate Pest Conference (1967)

This paper is intended to bring you up-to-date on the progress of various winter starling control projects conducted by our Bureau on feedlots in Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon. This report briefly covers the field work accomplished since that reported by the late Mr. H. Nelson Elliott in his paper delivered to the second meeting of your conference held in Anaheim, California, in March 1964. Prior to the winter of 1960-61 we experienced a tremendous build-up of starling populations in feedlot situations throughout the Pacific Northwest. The expanding livestock feeding industry was receiving great economic losses from starlings eating livestock feed …
