Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Wildlife Disease Investigation Manual
Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications
This manual is intended as a reference for people investigating wildlife mortality events or illness. Its primary objective is to ensure that appropriate samples are collected in the field, and that these reach a diagnostic laboratory in suitable condition for detailed examination. This will ensure an optimal chance to determine the cause and nature of the disease and to assess significance.
It is impossible to provide detailed guidelines that will be appropriate for all circumstances; our intent is to provide general directions that can be modified to fit the circumstances. Whenever possible, the laboratory that will be examining the specimens …

The objective of Canada’s National Chronic Wasting Disease Control Strategy is to establish a coordinated national policy and a disease response and management framework to minimize the negative impacts of Chronic Wasting Disease on biodiversity, human and livestock health, the environment and the economy. The ultimate objective of this Strategy is to eradicate Chronic Wasting Disease from Canada or, failing this, to achieve the tightest possible control of the disease so that it does not spread to new geographic areas or to new species, and so that its environmental, economic and health impacts are minimized. Trace Elements Status Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) And Moose (Alces Alces) In Nova Scotia, Beth Pollock
Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications
The province of Nova Scotia is considered to have two moose (Alces alces) populations. In 2003, the moose of the mainland area of the province were formally listed “ENDANGERED” under the Nova Scotia Endangered Species Act. To date, the specific causes of the Mainland moose population decline have not been determined. Trace element imbalances have been considered as a potential etiology for the population decline. Liver and kidney samples were collected from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and moose throughout Nova Scotia during the fall and winter 2000-01 to compare trace element concentrations between the two species, in relation to age, …

Health Risk Assessment For The Introduction Of Eastern Wild Turkeys (Meleagris Gallopavo Silvestris) Into Nova Scotia, A.S. Neimanis, F.A. Leighton
Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications
This health risk assessment evaluates potential health risks associated with a proposed introduction of wild turkeys to the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. The preferred source for the turkeys would be the Province of Ontario, but alternative sources include the northeastern United States from Minnesota eastward and Tennessee northward. This report assesses qualitatively the probability that health hazards would be created in Nova Scotia in association with the introduction of wild turkeys and the magnitude of harm that would result, and the probability that the introduced wild turkeys would encounter health hazards in Nova Scotia and the magnitude of the …

A Comprehensive Review Of The Ecological And Human Social Effects Of Artificial Feeding And Baiting Of Wildlife, L. Dunkley, M.R.L. Cattet
Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications
In recent years, events within Canada and the United States have drawn attention to potential negative consequences of feeding and baiting wild animals, especially enhanced transmission of infectious diseases such as bovine tuberculosis and chronic wasting disease. This report was prepared to gather available science-based information on the ecological and human social effects of artificial feeding and baiting of wildlife into one readily accessible document. The contracting agencies, Parks Canada and Saskatchewan Environment, recognize that an objective review of existing literature may help to answer questions and concerns within and outside the agencies, and help to guide subsequent decision-making concerning …

A Ccwhc Technical Bulletin: Drug Residues In Wild Meat – Addressing A Public Health Concern, Marc Cattet
Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre: Newsletters and Publications
Veterinary drugs play a valuable role in wildlife management and research. They are used widely for a variety of reasons, in particular, the capture and restraint of wild animals (Table 1). However, the availability and use of veterinary drugs is threatened if government regulations or the public trust are violated. Drug residues in wildlife are an important public health concern, especially for those who consume wild meat. Although the likelihood of consuming meat from a wild animal administered drug shortly before death is small, wildlife personnel (conservation officers, park wardens, biologists, veterinarians, etc.) are still confronted from time to time …
