Effective-Range Theory For An Electron In A Short-Range Potential And A Laser Field, M. V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The time-dependent effective-range (TDER) theory introduced by Frolov et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 053003 (2003)] and used in numerous applications for processes involving a linearly polarized intense laser field is presented in detail for the general problem of an electron, initially bound in a short-range potential, interacting with a laser field of arbitrary polarization. The TDER theory combines the well-known effective-range theory for a weakly bound electron in a short-range potential with the quasistationary, quasienergy state (QQES) or Floquet formulation for an electron interacting with a harmonic, time-dependent field, such as a monochromatic laser field. We present the basic …

Threshold Effects On Plateau Electron Angular Distributions In Above-Threshold Detachment, Katarzyna Krajewska, Ilya I. Fabrikant, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Rates of above-threshold detachment (ATD) of H (s-electron) and F (p-electron) ions, calculated using the Sturmian-Floquet quasienergy approach, are investigated as a function of intensity for the case that the laser field intensity passes across ponderomotively shifted detachment thresholds. Pronounced enhancements of both detached electron angular distributions and fixed-angle ATD spectra in the low- and mid-energy plateau region are found at near-threshold laser intensities. These enhancements are sensitive to the initial state symmetry (i.e., the s or p symmetry) of the valence electron and occur in a narrow angular interval that is far from …

Angularly Resolved Electron Spectra Of H By Few-Cycle Laser Pulses, Liang-You Peng, Qihuang Gong, Anthony F. Starace Jun 2008

Angularly Resolved Electron Spectra Of H− By Few-Cycle Laser Pulses, Liang-You Peng, Qihuang Gong, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

We study theoretically the detachment of H by a linearly polarized few-cycle laser pulse. We show that the angularly resolved distribution of the electrons is very sensitive to the carrier envelope phase (CEP) and the duration of the short laser pulse. This in turn provides an additional means to measure the CEP of a laser pulse at lower laser intensities.

Wavelength Scaling Of High-Harmonic Yield: Threshold Phenomena And Bound State Symmetry Dependence, M. V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace May 2008

Wavelength Scaling Of High-Harmonic Yield: Threshold Phenomena And Bound State Symmetry Dependence, M. V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace

Describing harmonic generation (HG) in terms of a system’s complex quasienergy, the harmonic power PΔE(λ) (over a fixed interval, ΔE, of harmonic energies) is shown to reproduce the wavelength scaling predicted recently by two groups of authors based on solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation: PΔE(λ) ~ λx, where x ≈ 5–6. Oscillations of PΔE(λ) on a fine λ scale are then shown to have a quantum origin, involving threshold phenomena within a system of interacting ionization and HG channels, …

Attosecond Pulse Carrier-Envelope Phase Effects On Ionized Electron Momentum And Energy Distributions: Roles Of Frequency, Intensity And An Additional Ir Pulse, Liang-You Peng, Evgeny A. Pronin, Anthony F. Starace Feb 2008

Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The effects of the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of a few-cycle attosecond pulse on ionized electron momentum and energy spectra are analyzed, both with and without an additional few-cycle IR pulse. In the absence of an IR pulse, the CEP-induced asymmetries in the ionized electron momentum distributions are shown to vary as the 3/2 power of the attosecond pulse intensity. These asymmetries are also found to satisfy an approximate scaling law involving the frequency and intensity of the attosecond pulse. In the presence of even a very weak IR pulse (having an intensity of the order of 1011–1012 …

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Investigations of light–matter interactions and motion in the microcosm have entered a new temporal regime, the regime of attosecond physics. It is a main 'spin-off' of strong field (i.e., intense laser) physics, in which nonperturbative effects are fundamental. Attosecond pulses open up new avenues for time-domain studies of multi-electron dynamics in atoms, molecules, plasmas, and solids on their natural, quantum mechanical time scale and at dimensions shorter than molecular and even atomic scales. These capabilities promise a revolution in our microscopic knowledge and understanding of matter.

This focus issue of New Journal of Physics is centered on experimental and theoretical …

Effective-range theory is developed to describe the processes of multiphoton bremsstrahlung absorption and the emission of laser radiation that accompanies the scattering of electrons from atoms in a laser field. It is found that the cross sections for multiphoton absorption in the plateau region increases resonantly for electron energies corresponding to the thresholds of induced bremsstrahlung (i.e., multiples of the photon energy). It is shown that this effect is caused by the laser-field modified threshold phenomena in the cross sections for multichannel reactions (Baz’ threshold anomalies).
