Controlling The Chaotic Motions Of An Airfoil With A Nonlinear Stiffness Using Closed-Loop Harmonic Parametric Excitation, Robert Bruce Alstrom Dec 2020

Controlling The Chaotic Motions Of An Airfoil With A Nonlinear Stiffness Using Closed-Loop Harmonic Parametric Excitation, Robert Bruce Alstrom

Faculty and Student Publications

The purpose of this research is to conduct a preliminary investigation into the possibility of suppressing the flutter and post-flutter (chaotic) responses of a two-dimensional self-excited airfoil with a cubic nonlinear stiffness (in torsion) and linear viscous damping via closed-loop harmonic parametric excitation. It was found that the initial configuration of the proposed control scheme caused the torsional/pitch dynamics to act as a nonlinear energy sink; as a result, it was identified that the mechanisms of vibration suppression are the resonance capture cascade and the short duration or isolated resonance capture. It is the isolated resonance capture that is responsible …

New Method For Beyond The Standard Model Invisible Particle Searches In Tau Lepton Decays, E. De La Cruz-Burelo, A. De Yta-Hernandez, M. Hernandez-Villanueva Dec 2020

New Method For Beyond The Standard Model Invisible Particle Searches In Tau Lepton Decays, E. De La Cruz-Burelo, A. De Yta-Hernandez, M. Hernandez-Villanueva

Faculty and Student Publications

Motivated by models proposed to explain Standard Model anomalies, and the unprecedented τ+τ- data to be collected by the Belle II experiment during the next years, we study the kinematics of tau pair decays and propose a new method to search for lepton flavor violating processes in tau lepton decays to invisible beyond Standard Model particles, such as τ→ℓα, where ℓ is either an electron or a muon, and α is a massive particle that escapes undetected. The new method improves by one order of magnitude the expected upper limit on the τ→ℓα production in 3×1 prong tau decays and …

© 2020 The Authors. Published by Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA. Intermolecular interactions in bulk water are dominated by pairwise and non-pairwise cooperative interactions. While accurate descriptions of the pairwise interactions are available and can be tested by precise low-frequency spectra of the water dimer up to 550 cm−1, the same does not hold for the three-body interactions. Here, we report the first comprehensive spectrum of the water trimer in the frequency region from 70 to 620 cm−1 using helium-nanodroplet isolation and free-electron lasers. By comparison to accompanying high-level quantum calculations, the experimentally observed intermolecular bands can be assigned. …

Reliable Extraction Of Energy Landscape Properties From Critical Force Distributions, Sudeep Adhikari, K. S. D. Beach Jun 2020

Reliable Extraction Of Energy Landscape Properties From Critical Force Distributions, Sudeep Adhikari, K. S. D. Beach

Faculty and Student Publications

The structural dynamics of a biopolymer is governed by a process of diffusion through its conformational energy landscape. In pulling experiments using optical tweezers, features of the energy landscape can be extracted from the probability distribution of the critical force at which the polymer unfolds. The analysis is often based on rate equations having Bell-Evans form, although it is understood that this modeling is inadequate and leads to unreliable landscape parameters in many common situations. Dudko et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 108101 (2006)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.96.108101] have emphasized this critique and proposed an alternative form that includes an additional shape parameter (and …

Copyright © 2020 American Chemical Society. Reversible CO2 binders under ambient conditions are of significant interest for multiple applications in sensing and capture technologies. In this paper, a general systematic way to evaluate CO2 receptors with π-systems is put forward. A series of receptors (five pyridine-based and one triazine-based) are evaluated as CO2 binders in terms of number of hydrogen bonding sites, strength of hydrogen bond donors, and number of nucleophilic sites. The binding of CO2 to the receptors was probed by computational models, absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and 1H NMR studies. Multiple solvents with varying ionic strength …

Characterizing Multiscale Geometry, Anisotropic Behaviors, Bulk Properties, And Wettability Of The Woodford Shale, Pratap Bohara Mar 2020

Characterizing Multiscale Geometry, Anisotropic Behaviors, Bulk Properties, And Wettability Of The Woodford Shale, Pratap Bohara

Graduate Student Council Research Grants

Overview: I am Pratap Bohara--a fourth year PhD student in the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at the University of Mississippi. I define myself as a dedicated research fellow with more than seven years of experience in the field of Geology and Geological Engineering. The proposed study will integrate geology, geochemistry, and surface chemistry to advance understanding of oil and gas behavior within the Woodford Shale of Oklahoma.

Intellectual Merit: Although this unit has abundant kerogen, total organic carbon (TOC), a high hydrogen index (HI), a low oxygen index (OI), and is thermally mature seemingly making reservoir economic but …

Nested Adaptation Of Mcmc Algorithms, Dao Nguyen, Perry De Valpine, Yves Atchade, Daniel Turek, Nicholas Michaud, Christopher Paciorek Jan 2020

Nested Adaptation Of Mcmc Algorithms, Dao Nguyen, Perry De Valpine, Yves Atchade, Daniel Turek, Nicholas Michaud, Christopher Paciorek

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2020 International Society for Bayesian Analysis Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods are ubiquitous tools for simulation-based inference in many fields but designing and identifying good MCMC samplers is still an open question. This paper introduces a novel MCMC algorithm, namely, Nested Adaptation MCMC. For sampling variables or blocks of variables, we use two levels of adaptation where the inner adaptation optimizes the MCMC performance within each sampler, while the outer adaptation explores the space of valid kernels to find the optimal samplers. We provide a theoretical foundation for our approach. To show the generality and usefulness of the …
