Let n and k be arbitrary positive integers. We will tend to be concerned with small k and with n which are several times k!. I stated two conditions on (n, k) in a previous paper; in this paper I restate them and further explore them. In particular, it is proven that if n is the least number satisfying Condition 1 for a certain k, then the least number for k + l must be at least 2n + l. Condition 1 and Condition 2 are rephrased graph-theoretically. A heuristic explanation for why the quadratic. residues tend to satisfy Condition …

We determined effects of different levels of human disturbance on small mammal richness and relative abundance from live-trapping data obtained in Itasca State Park in northwestern Minnesota. We developed a quantitative measure of human disturbance based on disturbance units and trapped small mammals on three study sites, each reflecting a different level of disturbance. Our data revealed that small mammal diversity decreased with increasing human disturbance. Amount of ground cover and litter depth also appeared to be important in explaining differences in the demographic patterns of small mammals among sites.

To test the impact of Lake Superior on local climates, daily temperature data were collected from two weather stations in Duluth, Minnesota for the period 1961 through 1990. The broad goal of the research was to ascertain to what extent climate conditions differed between lakeside and inland locations. Temperature data were standardized to local lake-level to control for altitudinal differences between weather stations. These data were then analyzed at two temporal scales, annual and seasonal, with the focus on mean high and mean low temperatures. Results indicated that the moderating effect of the lake indeed was apparent especially in raising …
