Evidence For Correlated Titanium And Deuterium Depletion In The Galactic Ism, Jason X. Prochaska, Todd M. Tripp, Christopher Howk Dec 2004

Evidence For Correlated Titanium And Deuterium Depletion In The Galactic Ism, Jason X. Prochaska, Todd M. Tripp, Christopher Howk

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

Current measurements indicate that the deuterium abundance in diffuse interstellar gas varies spatially by a factor of ~4 among sightlines extending beyond the Local Bubble. One plausible explanation for the scatter is the variable depletion of D onto dust grains. To test this scenario, we have obtained high signal-to-noise, high resolution profiles of the refractory ion Ti II along seven Galactic sightlines with D/H ranging from 0.65 to 2.1 × 10−5. These measurements, acquired with the recently upgraded Keck/HIRES spectrometer, indicate a correlation between Ti/H and D/H at the > 95% c.l. Therefore, our observations support the interpretation that D/H scatter …

My Life With Polymer Science: Scientific And Personal Memoirs, Otto Vogl

Emeritus Faculty Author Gallery

My "life story" will begin with my formative years, my childhood and student days at the University of Vienna, including my dissertation. It will be followed by my teaching appointment as an Instructor at the II. Chemical Institute of the University of Vienna. The urge to see other lands, learn other languages and scientific methods led to the Wandering Years that brought me to the United States. After three years spent as a Research Associate at the University of Michigan and at Princeton University I spent more than 13 years in an industrial career at the Du Pont Company in …

Sign Detection In Natural Images With Conditional Random Fields, Jerod Weinman Sep 2004

Sign Detection In Natural Images With Conditional Random Fields, Jerod Weinman

Computer Science Department Faculty Publication Series

Traditional generative Markov random fields for segmenting images model the image data and corresponding labels jointly, which requires extensive independence assumptions for tractability. We present the conditional random field for an application in sign detection, using typical scale and orientation selective texture filters and a nonlinear texture operator based on the grating cell. The resulting model captures dependencies between neighboring image region labels in a data-dependent way that escapes the difficult problem of modeling image formation, instead focusing effort and computation on the labeling task. We compare the results of training the model with pseudo-likelihood against an approximation of the …

Is Necessity The Mother Of Innovation? The Adoption And Use Of Web Technologies Among Congressional Offices, Kevin M. Esterling, David M.J. Lazer, Michael Neblo Feb 2004

Is Necessity The Mother Of Innovation? The Adoption And Use Of Web Technologies Among Congressional Offices, Kevin M. Esterling, David M.J. Lazer, Michael Neblo

National Center for Digital Government

From first paragraph: Communication between legislator and constituents is fundamental to effective democratic representation, and devising the institutional means for citizen/legislator communication stands as one of the core and persistent problems in the practice of democracy. A legislator needs information about the preferences, ideals, norms, and beliefs of her constituents in order to do her job well. Similarly, citizens need information about the actions and decisions of their representative in order to maintain appropriate accountability. But as national problems become more complex, and as the political process grows more and more dominated by experts and organized groups, it is becoming …

An Introduction To The Thermodynamic And Macrostate Levels Of Nonequivalent Ensembles, H Touchette, Rs Ellis, B Turkington Jan 2004

An Introduction To The Thermodynamic And Macrostate Levels Of Nonequivalent Ensembles, H Touchette, Rs Ellis, B Turkington

Mathematics and Statistics Department Faculty Publication Series

This short paper presents a nontechnical introduction to the problem of nonequivalent microcanonical and canonical ensembles. Both the thermodynamic and the macrostate levels of definition of nonequivalent ensembles are introduced. The many relationships that exist between these two levels are also explained in simple physical terms.

Thermodynamic Versus Statistical Nonequivalence Of Ensembles For The Mean-Field Blume-Emery-Griffiths Model, Rs Ellis, H Touchette, B Turkington Jan 2004

Thermodynamic Versus Statistical Nonequivalence Of Ensembles For The Mean-Field Blume-Emery-Griffiths Model, Rs Ellis, H Touchette, B Turkington

Mathematics and Statistics Department Faculty Publication Series

We illustrate a novel characterization of nonequivalent statistical mechanical ensembles using the mean-field Blume–Emery–Griffiths (BEG) model as a test model. The novel characterization takes effect at the level of the microcanonical and canonical equilibrium distributions of states. For this reason it may be viewed as a statistical characterization of nonequivalent ensembles which extends and complements the common thermodynamic characterization of nonequivalent ensembles based on nonconcave anomalies of the microcanonical entropy. By computing numerically both the microcanonical and canonical sets of equilibrium distributions of states of the BEG model, we show that for values of the mean energy where the microcanonical …

Rich Example Of Geometrically Induced Nonlinearity: From Rotobreathers And Kinks To Moving Localized Modes And Resonant Energy Transfer, Pg Kevrekidis, Et. Al Jan 2004

Rich Example Of Geometrically Induced Nonlinearity: From Rotobreathers And Kinks To Moving Localized Modes And Resonant Energy Transfer, Pg Kevrekidis, Et. Al

Mathematics and Statistics Department Faculty Publication Series

We present an experimentally realizable, simple mechanical system with linear interactions whose geometric nature leads to nontrivial, nonlinear dynamical equations. The equations of motion are derived and their ground state structures are analyzed. Selective “static” features of the model are examined in the context of nonlinear waves including rotobreathers and kinklike solitary waves. We also explore “dynamic” features of the model concerning the resonant transfer of energy and the role of moving intrinsic localized modes in the process.

Long Distance Chiral Corrections In Beta Meson Amplitudes, Jj Sanz-Cillero, Jf Donoghue, A Ross Jan 2004

Long Distance Chiral Corrections In Beta Meson Amplitudes, Jj Sanz-Cillero, Jf Donoghue, A Ross

Physics Department Faculty Publication Series

We discuss the chiral corrections to fB and BB with particular emphasis on determining the portion of the correction that arises from long distance physics. For very small pion and kaon masses all of the usual corrections are truly long distance, while for larger masses the long distance portion decreases. These chiral corrections have been used to extrapolate lattice calculations towards the physical region of lighter masses. We show in particular that the chiral extrapolation is better behaved if only the long distance portion of the correction is used. We also display the long distance portions of the infrared enhanced …
