An Excursion From Enumerative Geometry To Solving Systems Of Polynomial Equations With Macaulay 2, Frank Sottile Nov 2000

An Excursion From Enumerative Geometry To Solving Systems Of Polynomial Equations With Macaulay 2, Frank Sottile

Mathematics and Statistics Department Faculty Publication Series

Solving a system of polynomial equations is a ubiquitous problem in the applications of mathematics. Until recently, it has been hopeless to find explicit solutions to such systems, and mathematics has instead developed deep and powerful theories about the solutions to polynomial equations. Enumerative Geometry is concerned with counting the number of solutions when the polynomials come from a geometric situation and Intersection Theory gives methods to accomplish the enumeration. We use Macaulay 2 to investigate some problems from enumerative geometry, illustrating some applications of symbolic computation to this important problem of solving systems of polynomial equations. Besides enumerating solutions …

The Two Micron All-Sky Survey: Removing The Infrared Foreground, John E. Gizis, Michael F. Skrutskie

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

We introduce the properties of the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) survey for IAU Symposium 204. 2MASS is a near-infrared survey of the entire sky characterized by high reliability and completeness. Catalogs and images for 47% of the sky are now available online. This data release has been used by Wright (2000) and Cambr´esy et al. (2000) to subtract the stellar foreground at 1.25 and 2.2 microns from COBE DIRBE data, revealing the cosmological near-infrared background.

Research Ethics: An Introduction, Tom Regan Apr 2000

Research Ethics: An Introduction, Tom Regan

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse

Research Ethics: an Introduction focuses both on how Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) fits into the field of applied ethics and on procedures for making decisions that have a moral component. Tom Regan presents “Morally Relevant Questions: A Check List” with the central theme of balancing conflicting obligations. We expand this discussion with several classic resources by well known experts in research ethics that articulate critical topics. We present a Case Study from The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. We consider the question of professional codes and think about the toll of making the right decision. In the Additional …

The Mentoring Of Graduate Students, Margaret King

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse

The Mentoring of Graduate Students presents basic issues that face both mentors and their protégés. Margaret King, the Graduate School, is our faculty guide for this module. We focus on some of the ethical values most central to the mentoring process such as justice and the idea of contracts. One of the challenges of the mentoring experience is that it involves rules and practices both tangible and intangible. Dr. King explores some of these intangibles- Right Attention, Right Balance, Right Empowerment and Right Boundaries- in the central essay and we focus on them additionally in our Central Theme section. We …

Responsible Use Of Statistical Methods, Larry Nelson, Charles Proctor, Cavell Brownie Apr 2000

Responsible Use Of Statistical Methods, Larry Nelson, Charles Proctor, Cavell Brownie

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse

Responsible Use of Statistical Methods focuses on good statistical practices. In the Introduction we distinguish between two types of activities; one, those involving the study design and protocol (a priori) and two, those actions taken with the results (post hoc.) We note that right practice is right ethics, the distinction between a mistake and misconduct and emphasize the importance of how the central hypothesis is stated. The Central Essay, Identification of Outliers in a Set of Precision Agriculture Experimental Data by Larry A. Nelson, Charles H. Proctor and Cavell Brownie, is a good paper to study. The Applied Ethics section …

Science And The Media: Ethics Issues, Joann Burkholder Apr 2000

Science And The Media: Ethics Issues, Joann Burkholder

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse

This module addresses the complex interface of research and the media; this interface necessarily involves issues of public policy, however, for the purposes of this module we will focus on media issues and touch on public policy in the Thinking Outside the Box section. For simplicity, when we refer to “media” we are speaking of journalists covering the science beat. In the Introduction we talk about the special collaboration between the media and the researcher and the challenges both face in communicating science to the public at large. We note the ethical component inherent in all communication and include quotations …

Stellar Populations In The Large Magellanic Cloud From 2mass, Sergei Nikolaev, Martin D. Weinberg Mar 2000

Stellar Populations In The Large Magellanic Cloud From 2mass, Sergei Nikolaev, Martin D. Weinberg

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

We present a morphological analysis of the feature-rich 2MASS LMC colormagnitude diagram, identifying Galactic and LMC populations and estimating the density of LMC populations alone. We also present the projected spatial distributions of various stellar populations. The conditions that prevailed when 2MASS observed the LMC provided 10s limiting sensitivity for J <∼ 16.3, H <∼ 15.3, Ks <∼ 14.7. Major populations are identified based on matching morphological features of the color-magnitude diagram with expected positions of known populations, isochrone fits, and analysis of the projected spatial distributions. 2MASS has detected a significant population of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (>∼ 104 sources) and obscured AGB stars ( >∼ 2×103 sources). The LMC populations along the first-ascent red giant branch (RGB) and AGB are quantified. Comparison of the giant luminosity functions in the bar and the outer regions of the LMC shows that both luminosity functions appear consistent with …

C32, A Young Star Cluster In Ic 1613, Ted K. Wyder, Paul W. Hodge, Andrew Cole

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

The Local Group irregular galaxy IC 1613 has remained an enigma for many years because of its apparent lack of star clusters. We report the successful search for clusters among several of the candidate objects identified many years ago on photographic plates. We have used a single HST WFPC2 pointing and a series of images obtained with the WIYN telescope under exceptional seeing conditions, examining a total of 23 of the previously published candidates. All but six of these objects were found to be either asterisms or background galaxies. Five of the six remaining candidates possibly are small, sparse clusters …

Equation-Based Congestion Control For Unicast Applications, Jitendra Padhye Feb 2000

Equation-Based Congestion Control For Unicast Applications, Jitendra Padhye

Computer Science Department Faculty Publication Series

This paper proposes a mechanismfor equation-based congestion control for unicast traffic. Most best-effort traffic in the current Internet is well-served by the dominant transport protocol TCP. However, traffic such as best-effort unicast streaming multimedia could find use for a TCP-friendly congestion control mechanism that refrains from reducing the sending rate in half in response to a single packet drop. With our mechanism, the sender explicitly adjusts its sending rate as a function of the measured rate of loss events, where a loss event consists of one or more packets dropped within a single round-trip time. We use both simulations and …

Large Deviation Principles And Complete Equivalence And Nonequivalence Results For Pure And Mixed Ensembles, Rs Ellis, K Haven, B Turkington Jan 2000

Large Deviation Principles And Complete Equivalence And Nonequivalence Results For Pure And Mixed Ensembles, Rs Ellis, K Haven, B Turkington

Mathematics and Statistics Department Faculty Publication Series

We consider a general class of statistical mechanical models of coherent structures in turbulence, which includes models of two-dimensional fluid motion, quasi-geostrophic flows, and dispersive waves. First, large deviation principles are proved for the canonical ensemble and the microcanonical ensemble. For each ensemble the set of equilibrium macrostates is defined as the set on which the corresponding rate function attains its minimum of 0. We then present complete equivalence and nonequivalence results at the level of equilibrium macrostates for the two ensembles. Microcanonical equilibrium macrostates are characterized as the solutions of a certain constrained minimization problem, while canonical equilibrium macrostates …

K ->Pi Pi Phenomenology In The Presence Of Electromagnetism, V Cirigliano, Jf Donoghue, Eugene Golowich Jan 2000

K ->Pi Pi Phenomenology In The Presence Of Electromagnetism, V Cirigliano, Jf Donoghue, Eugene Golowich

Physics Department Faculty Publication Series

We describe the influence of electromagnetism on the phenomenology of $K \to \pi\pi$ decays. This is required because the present data were analyzed without inclusion of electromagnetic radiative corrections, and hence contain several ambiguities and uncertainties which we describe in detail. Our presentation includes a full description of the infrared effects needed for a new experimental analysis. It also describes the general treatment of final state interaction phases, needed because Watson's theorem is no longer valid in the presence of electromagnetism. The phase of the isospin-two amplitude ${\cal A}_2$ may be modified by $50 \to 100\%$. We provide a tentative …

Dimension-Eight Operators In The Weak Ope, V Cirigliano, Jf Donoghue, Eugene Golowich Jan 2000

Dimension-Eight Operators In The Weak Ope, V Cirigliano, Jf Donoghue, Eugene Golowich

Physics Department Faculty Publication Series

We argue that there is a potential flaw in the standard treatment of weak decay amplitudes, including that of ǫ′/ǫ. We show that (contrary to conventional wisdom) dimension-eight operators do contribute to weak amplitudes, at order GFαs and without 1/M2W suppression. We demonstrate the existence of these operators through the use of a simple weak hamiltonian. Their contribution appears in different places depending on which scheme is adopted in performing the OPE. If one performs a complete separation of short and long distance physics within a cutoff scheme, dimension-eight operators occur in the weak hamiltonian at order GFαs/μ2, μ being …

Statistical Mechanics Of A Discrete Nonlinear System, K Rasmussen, T Cretegny, Pg Kevrekidis Jan 2000

Statistical Mechanics Of A Discrete Nonlinear System, K Rasmussen, T Cretegny, Pg Kevrekidis

Mathematics and Statistics Department Faculty Publication Series

Statistical mechanics of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation is studied by means of analytical and numerical techniques. The lower bound of the Hamiltonian permits the construction of standard Gibbsian equilibrium measures for positive temperatures. Beyond the line of T = ∞, we identify a phase transition through a discontinuity in the partition function. The phase transition is demonstrated to manifest itself in the creation of breatherlike localized excitations. Interrelation between the statistical mechanics and the nonlinear dynamics of the system is explored numerically in both regimes.
