Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

This research aims to analyse the impact of quarrying on the health and perception of neighbouring communities. A standard questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data from quarry neighbours in a residential neighbourhood located in the city of Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Residences were distributed based on proximity to a quarrying company, resulting in three distances divided by three equally distant radii, named as Area I (closest to the quarrying company at 630 m), Area II (730 m), and Area III (farthest from the quarrying company at 830 m). Data gathered from 177 residents were analysed with logistic regression models. …

Computational Analysis Of Chromophore Tripeptides Followingfusion Of Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein And Cell-Penetrating Peptides, Silvia Tri Widyaningtyas, Ekawati Betty Pratiwi, Budiman Bela

Makara Journal of Science

Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) are small peptides that can transfer other materials into a cellular compartment. In this research, we studied the effect of fusion of new CPPs to the N-terminal of enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein eGFP on the ability of the latter to fluoresce. Results showed that the recombinant protein CPPs-eGFP could be successfully expressed in Escherichia coli. In contrast to E. coli expressing wild-type eGFP, which could fluoresce under ultraviolet (UV) or visible light, E. coli expressing CPPs-eGFP lost their ability to fluoresce. PyMol, a molecular visualization system, revealed that fusion of the new CPPs to the N-terminal …

Makara Journal of Science

Owing to its successful application to complex molecular systems, computational density functional theory (DFT) has been used to study the effect of an electric field on the molecular polarizability and HOMO–LUMO gap of 1-phenyl-4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}benzene (1) and its fluoro-, chloro-, and cyano- derivatives, namely, 1-fluoro-4-(4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}phenyl)benzene (2), 1-chloro-4-(4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}phenyl)benzene (3), and 4-(4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}phenyl)benzonitrile (4). These molecules belong to the family of nematic liquid crystals with three rings: two benzene and one cyclohexane. Furthermore, two DFT approaches, namely, B3LYP and M062X, have been used to examine the results obtained. This study reveals a remarkable feature: the polarizability of these molecules follows nearly a step function …

C-reactive protein (CRP) is the best clinical marker for systemic inflammation. Obesity is associated with increased CRP levels. Systemic inflammation is present before morbidity occurs. Research reveals that the identification of obesity indicators and CRP levels is limited among Indonesians. The present study investigated the associations between obesity indicators (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference [WC], waist-to-hip ratio [WHR], waist-to-height ratio [WHtR]) and CRP levels among Indonesian adults. This cross-sectional study based on Indonesian Family Life Survey-5 2014–2015 was conducted among 3,386 adults (≥ 40 years) living in 13 provinces in Indonesia during the study period. All data were collected …

Implementation Of Smartphone Navigation Features By Combined Forces In Determining The Hazards Of Terrorism In Poso, Mahturai Rian Fitra Mrf, Arthur Josias Simon Runturambi Ajsr

Journal of Terrorism Studies

The presence of armed terrorist groups in Poso can threaten security conditions in the country because their activities are considered quite dangerous for the surrounding community. This terrorist group did not hesitate to kill civilians who tried to deny its existence. Therefore, various joint military operations have been launched to crush this armed terrorist group, such as Camar Maleo and Tinombala. However, until now this terrorist group is difficult to destroy, due to the condition of the operating area in the form of dense tropical rainforest and steep slopes. This makes it difficult for troops to carry out chases and …

Hepatitis B Surface Antigen And Viral Dna Detection And Prevalence In Nige-Ria, Abazuh Uchenna Desmond, Ohiengbomwan Onaiwu Tola, Adeolu Isaac, Yusuf Mercy

Makara Journal of Science

Hepatitis B infection is a major public health issue with a high mortality rate. It is caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV), a small incomplete hepadnavirus with several open reading frames (ORF). High mutation rates of the HBV ORFs due to the virus’ replicating strategy are associated with the development and emergence of mutant strains, which may result in occult infections that are undetectable by conventional diagnostic assays. In this study, we first investigated the presence and prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and HBV DNA among 204 patients visiting the specialist hospital in Osogbo, Nigeria, by using the …

Removal Of Pb2+ And Cd2+ From Aqueous Solutions Using Pocl3 Cross-Linked Carboxymethyl Derivatives Of Legume Starch, Ayodele Akinterinwa, Ebun Oladele, Albert Adebayo, Olubode Ajayi

Makara Journal of Science

Starch was extracted from Kwakil beans and cross-linked with POCl3 (1% v/w of starch dry basis [db]). The cross-linked starch (PCS) derivative was carboxymethylated with sodium monochloroacetate (5% to 30% w/w of starch db) to obtain cross-linked carboxymethyl starch (PCCS) derivatives. The derivatives were used in the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+, and the process was monitored using atomic adsorption spectrometer. Carboxymethylation enhanced adsorption of ions (Cd2+, 95% to 96%; Pb, 65% to 94%), and it was more appreciable with Pb2+ than Cd2+ as degree of substitution increased from 0.008 to 0.052. …

Key Deposition Parameters For Short-Type Zno Nanosheets Electrodeposited Under Galvanostatic Mode, Gerald Ensang Timuda, Dhimas Harjanto, Wahyu Bambang Widayatno

Makara Journal of Science

Studies on the deposition of ZnO nanosheets grown vertically and perpendicular to conductive substrates have been conducted to obtain tall-type nanosheets (approximately 15 µm in height). However, some applications require short-type nanosheets with a height of about 1µm or less. In this study, short-type ZnO nanosheets were electrodeposited on indium-doped tin oxide substrates under galvanostatic (constant current) mode for a short deposition time. Then, the key parameters to form nanosheet layers with a height in the micrometer order and with good coverage were evaluated. Deposition was performed at 1 mA/cm2 for 60 s. Ar gas was initially bubbled into …

Currently, environmental degradation caused by heavy metals has become a serious concern of many countries. To monitor the concentration of heavy metals in the environment, an in-situ sensor that can measure in real time and has high quality, sensitivity, and flexibility is essential. We proposed a modified multipath ring resonator (MPRR) based on silicon-on-insulator technology with additional gold nanodisk (GND) on top of the ring to increase its sensitivity. To prove the effect of GND on the sensitivity of the modified MPRR, finite-difference time-domain simulations were conducted. Results showed that the average sensitivity of the modified MPRR was 675 nm/RIU, …
