Analyzing And Detecting Android Malware And Deepfake, Md Shohel Rana Dec 2021

Analyzing And Detecting Android Malware And Deepfake, Md Shohel Rana

Dissertations

Rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) over the past several decades have produced a variety of technologies and tools that, among numerous cybersecurity issues, have enticed cybercriminals and hackers to design malware for the Android operating systems and/or manipulate multimedia. For example, high-quality and realistic fake videos, images, or audios have been created to spread misinformation and propaganda, foment political discord and hate, or even harass and blackmail people; these manipulated, high-quality and realistic videos became known recently as Deepfake. There has been much work done in recent years on malware analysis and …

Privacy-Aware And Hardware-Based Accleration Authentication Scheme For Internet Of Drones, Tom Henson Dec 2021

Privacy-Aware And Hardware-Based Accleration Authentication Scheme For Internet Of Drones, Tom Henson

Master's Theses

Drones are becoming increasingly present into today’s society through many different means such as outdoor sports, surveillance, delivery of goods etc. With such a rapid increase, a means of control and monitoring is needed as the drones become more interconnected and readily available. Thus, the idea of Internet of drones (IoD) is formed, an infrastructure in place to do those types of things. However, without an authentication system in place anyone could gain access or control to real time data to multiple drones within an area. This is a problem that I choose to tackle using a Field Programmable Gate …

Techniques For The Enantioselective Asymmetric Synthesis Of Benzyl Substituted Malonic Acid Esters, Madison Hansen Dec 2021

Techniques For The Enantioselective Asymmetric Synthesis Of Benzyl Substituted Malonic Acid Esters, Madison Hansen

Honors Theses

A popular method for the enantioselective synthesis of substituted malonic half esters is hydrolysis via Pig Liver Esterase (PLE), however some substrates produce low enantiomeric excess, namely benzyl-substituted malonic esters. Presented here are alternative methods explored for this synthesis, the first being phase-transfer catalyzed hydrolysis via N-benzyl quaternary ammonium salts derived from cinchona alkaloids. The second method utilized chiral auxiliary directed benzylation with auxiliaries including menthol and oxazolidinones. Though unsuccessful, this research provided valuable groundwork in the investigation for the enantioselective asymmetric synthesis of benzyl-substituted malonic acid esters.

Keywords: Pig Liver Esterase, Enantioselectivity, Phase-Transfer Catalysis, Cinchona Alkaloids, Quaternary Ammonium …

Synthesis Of Molecular Probes For The Detection Of Toxic Analytes, Rashid Mia Dec 2021

Synthesis Of Molecular Probes For The Detection Of Toxic Analytes, Rashid Mia

Dissertations

Two different types of molecular probes have been synthesized. The first family of probes is the coumarin class of compounds. These chemodosimters are referred to as Low Molecular Weight Fluorescent probes (LMFP). The other type of molecular probe is a macrocycle known as a pillar[5]arene receptor.

The chemodosimters (2.12a-c and 3.12a) were synthesized in four to five steps. The photophysical properties were extensively studied in various solvent systems (DMSO, CH3CN, DMF, MeOH, EtOH, Me2CO, MeCO2Et, CHCl3, C6H5Me, and C6H6). Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) …

Multi-Valued Solutions For The Equation Of Motion, Darcy-Jordan Model, As A Cauchy Problem: A Shocking Event, Chandler Shimp Oct 2021

Multi-Valued Solutions For The Equation Of Motion, Darcy-Jordan Model, As A Cauchy Problem: A Shocking Event, Chandler Shimp

Master's Theses

Shocks are physical phenomenon that occur quite often around us. In this thesis we examine the occurrence of shocks in finite amplitude acoustic waves from a numerical perspective. These waves, or jump discontinuities, yield ill-behaved solutions when solved numerically. This study takes on the challenge of finding both single- and multi-valued solutions.

The previously unsolved problem in this study is the representation of the Equation of Motion (EoM) in the form of the Darcy-Jordan model (DJM) and expressed as a dimensionless IVP Cauchy problem. Prior attempts to solve have resulted only in implicit solutions or explicit solutions with certain initial …

Chitosan Graphene Composite Fabrication And Characterization For Treatment Of Harmful Algal Blooms And Toxins, Sarah Zetterholm Oct 2021

Chitosan Graphene Composite Fabrication And Characterization For Treatment Of Harmful Algal Blooms And Toxins, Sarah Zetterholm

Master's Theses

Chitosan graphene composites were fabricated and characterized as a management strategy for harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by various species of cyanobacteria. These chitosan graphene materials were compared to previously studied chitosan graphene-oxide composites in both material properties and HAB treatment. In previous studies, adsorption of the cyanobacteria onto the surface of the composite materials has been observed. Investigations of the pure materials for these composites are also included in this study to determine whether removal is a result of charge interactions with the composite, or as an inherent property of the graphene or graphene oxide. Initial results suggest that …

Controlling Degradation With Force And Light, Brad Davis Sep 2021

Controlling Degradation With Force And Light, Brad Davis

Dissertations

Stimuli-responsive polymers respond to changes in their environment by altering their physical and chemical properties. Their responsiveness allows them to be used as sensors, mechanical actuators, delivery systems, and can yield either elongated lifetimes through healing mechanisms or shortened lifetimes through triggered degradation. Still a growing field in polymer science, researchers seek to expand the capabilities of these materials by improving their specificity, range, and mechanisms of both the stimuli and the response. The work presented explores stimuli-responsive materials, focusing on mechanical and light stimuli, and how to gain control of the response by specific changes in the polymeric material. …

Does A Bottom-Up Mechanism Promote Hypoxia In The Mississippi Bight?, Virginie Sanial, Willard S. Moore, Alan M. Shiller Sep 2021

Does A Bottom-Up Mechanism Promote Hypoxia In The Mississippi Bight?, Virginie Sanial, Willard S. Moore, Alan M. Shiller

Faculty Publications

The Mississippi Bight, east of the Mississippi River, is a complex coastal ecosystem that, like the better-known Louisiana Shelf to the west, experiences seasonal bottom water hypoxia. However, input of allochthonous nutrients from the Mississippi River to the Mississippi Bight appears to be limited, begging the question of what drives seasonal hypoxia in this system. Prior research has suggested submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) could be an overlooked component of the Mississippi Bight biogeochemical system. We thus examined the hypothesis that SGD provides a “bottom up” driver for seasonal hypoxia in this area. We used a multi-tracer approach based on known …

The challenges faced with current fluorescence imaging agents have motivated us to study two nanostructures based on a hydrophobic dye, 6H-pyrrolo[3,2-b:4,5-b’]bis [1,4]benzothiazine (TRPZ). TRPZ is a heteroacene with a rigid, pi-conjugated structure, multiple reactive sites, and unique spectroscopic properties. Here we coupled TRPZ to a tert-butyl carbamate (BOC) protected 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propanoic acid (bisMPA) dendron via azide-alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition. Deprotection of the protected amine groups on the dendron afforded a cationic terminated amphiphile, TRPZ-bisMPA. TRPZ-bisMPA was nanoprecipitated into water to obtain nanoparticles (NPs) with a hydrodynamic radius that was <150 nm. For comparison, TRPZ-PG was encapsulated in pluronic-F127 (Mw …

The emission of these dyes is shown in the SWIR region with peak emission at 1097 nm. TolRosIndz was encapsulated with an amphiphilic linear dendritic block co-polymer (LDBC) coded 10-PhPCL-G3 with high uptake yield. Further, cellular toxicity was examined in vitro using HEK (human embryonic …

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And The Microbiomes Of Two Benthic Species, Samantha Ells Aug 2021

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And The Microbiomes Of Two Benthic Species, Samantha Ells

Master's Theses

The presence of oil has been shown to affect the microbiomes of the water column, sediments, and organisms, both by altering the diversity and the composition of those microbial communities. If the microbiome is altered it may no longer provide benefits to its host organism, impacting its ability to survive. Thus, it is important to understand the effects of large-scale contamination events including the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This study set out to examine the effects of oil exposure on the microbiome of two benthic species, southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma) and eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) to further understand the effects …

On A Stochastic Model Of Epidemics, Rachel Prather Aug 2021

On A Stochastic Model Of Epidemics, Rachel Prather

Master's Theses

This thesis examines a stochastic model of epidemics initially proposed and studied by Norman T.J. Bailey [1]. We discuss some issues with Bailey's stochastic model and argue that it may not be a viable theoretical platform for a more general epidemic model. A possible alternative approach to the solution of Bailey's stochastic model and stochastic modeling is proposed as well. Regrettably, any further study on those proposals will have to be discussed elsewhere due to a time constraint.

Sedimentology And Shallow Groundwater Responses Of A Coastal Marsh Along A Salinity Gradient: A Case Study In Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Mississippi, James Thompson

Master's Theses

Climate change and relative sea level rise is resulting in saltwater intrusion and inundation of coastal marshes. This study investigates factors affecting marsh hydrology, including sediment composition, seasonal variability, and coastal storms in Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) near Pascagoula, Mississippi. Analysis of sediment includes color, organic matter, carbonate, magnetic susceptibility, and particle size. Shallow groundwater hydrologic trends between Summer 2015 and Fall 2016 are established along a salinity gradient at four sites using water levels, temperature, and conductivity monitored at the surface and in piezometers at depths of 0.75m, 1.5m, and 2.25m.

Sediment analysis indicates reducing conditions …

A Modified Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient Method For Approximating The Scattering Amplitude, Samson Ayo Aug 2021

A Modified Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient Method For Approximating The Scattering Amplitude, Samson Ayo

Master's Theses

In this thesis, we look at an iterative method for approximating the scattering amplitude that involves solving two linear systems: a forward system Ax=b and an adjoint system ATy=g. Once these two systems are solved, the scattering amplitude, defined by gTx=yTb is easily obtained.

We derive a conjugate gradient-like iteration for a nonsymmetric saddle point matrix that is constructed to have a real positive spectrum. We investigate the use of Schur Complement preconditioners with block-diagonal factorization to speed up the convergence of our method and compare …

Assessing The Rates Of Post-Depositional Change Within 2004 Indian Ocean Sediments: Implications For Long-Term Records Of Paleotsunamis, Lillian Pearson Aug 2021

Assessing The Rates Of Post-Depositional Change Within 2004 Indian Ocean Sediments: Implications For Long-Term Records Of Paleotsunamis, Lillian Pearson

Master's Theses

Foraminifera are commonly used to examine patterns of tsunami inundation occurring over centennial to millennial timescales, but the impacts of post-depositional change on geologic reconstructions are unknown. In Sumatra, the taphonomic character (i.e., test surface condition) of a foraminifer can deteriorate over time, rendering them unidentifiable, and even dissolve them entirely. Here I investigate the rates of post-depositional change of foraminiferal assemblages found within the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami (IOT) deposit over a 15-year time interval in Aceh, Indonesia in a vegetated open coastal plain (Site 1: Pulot) and an unvegetated protected coastal cave (Site 2). I identified two zones …

Differences In Erosion Rates And Elevation Among Natural, Living And Hardened Shorelines In Mississippi, And Alabama, Brittany Juneau Aug 2021

Differences In Erosion Rates And Elevation Among Natural, Living And Hardened Shorelines In Mississippi, And Alabama, Brittany Juneau

Honors Theses

Shoreline erosion is a phenomenon that currently threatens both natural ecosystems and human settlements along the coast. With trends showing gradual sea level rise as a result of climate change, erosion is becoming an increasing threat to these communities. This research aims to provide more insight into the relationship between shoreline morphology and three shoreline protection techniques: natural marsh, living shoreline, and hardened structures. Six sites along the Alabama and Mississippi coast that had all three shoreline types were evaluated to determine what the average erosion rate and slope was for each shoreline. Erosion rates were calculated by image analysis …

Ensemble Data Fitting For Bathymetric Models Informed By Nominal Data, Samantha Zambo Aug 2021

Ensemble Data Fitting For Bathymetric Models Informed By Nominal Data, Samantha Zambo

Dissertations

Due to the difficulty and expense of collecting bathymetric data, modeling is the primary tool to produce detailed maps of the ocean floor. Current modeling practices typically utilize only one interpolator; the industry standard is splines-in-tension.

In this dissertation we introduce a new nominal-informed ensemble interpolator designed to improve modeling accuracy in regions of sparse data. The method is guided by a priori domain knowledge provided by artificially intelligent classifiers. We recast such geomorphological classifications, such as ‘seamount’ or ‘ridge’, as nominal data which we utilize as foundational shapes in an expanded ordinary least squares regression-based algorithm. To our knowledge …

Doping Of Conjugated Polymers: Preparation, Characterization And Device Fabrication, Kan Tang Aug 2021

Doping Of Conjugated Polymers: Preparation, Characterization And Device Fabrication, Kan Tang

Dissertations

Semiconducting conjugated polymers (CPs) as emerging materials for advanced electronic applications such as sensors, OPVs, and OEFTs has become an intriguing research topic in the past decades. It opens a new avenue of “flexible” electronics, which has shown great potential in next-generation electronic devices.

However, due to the nature of CP materials and related solution processing techniques, unlike almost perfectly crystalline silicon materials, CPs in the solid-state often exhibit much lower crystallinity if it is not complete amorphous, which severely hinder the electronic property and optical property of the materials. The crystallinity of CPs in a film is often uniquely …

Photopolymer Networks With Tunable Command Destruct Properties, William Walker Aug 2021

Photopolymer Networks With Tunable Command Destruct Properties, William Walker

Dissertations

Photoinduced thiol-catalyzed hydrogen abstraction and beta-scission of acyclic benzylidene acetals is demonstrated as a new route to “command-destruct” polymer thermosets. Using this approach, we show that poly(thioether acetal) networks synthesized via thiol-ene photopolymerization rapidly degrade to alkyl benzoate byproducts when triggered with light, transitioning from solid to liquid within seconds. The light-driven construction and destruction processes, accessible via distinct differences in kinetics, are readily amendable for photopatterning, additive/subtractive manufacturing, and wavelength-selective applications.

The first chapter of this dissertation details the development of command-destruct poly(thioether acetal) networks via a previously unexplored mechanism for polymer degradation. The degradation mechanism is confirmed via …

Comparison Of Supported Liquid Extraction And Solid Phase Extraction Of Methamphetamine From Urine And Method Validation By Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Taylor Hood Aug 2021

Comparison Of Supported Liquid Extraction And Solid Phase Extraction Of Methamphetamine From Urine And Method Validation By Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Taylor Hood

Master's Theses

Applications of SLE (supported liquid extraction) is a relatively new extraction technique that is not widely used in forensic toxicology. SLE is also easier and less time consuming than traditional LLE (liquid-liquid extraction) and SPE (Solid phase extraction). This work will compare the extraction efficiencies between SLE and SPE for methamphetamine from urine with detection and quantitation using GC-MS (gas chromatography- mass spectrometry). The SLE cartridges provide better analyte recoveries, eliminate emulsion formation, and allow for shorter processing time than other extraction techniques. The SPE cartridges used have a mixed-mode non-polar/strong cation exchange retention mechanism to extract basic analytes like …

Maximal Spacelike Surfaces In A Certain Homogeneous Lorentzian 3-Manifold, Sungwook Lee Aug 2021

Maximal Spacelike Surfaces In A Certain Homogeneous Lorentzian 3-Manifold, Sungwook Lee

Faculty Publications

The 2-parameter family of certain homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds, which includes Minkowski 3-space and anti-de Sitter 3-space, is considered. Each homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifold in the 2-parameter family has a solvable Lie group structure with left invariant metric. A generalized integral representation formula for maximal spacelike surfaces in the homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds is obtained. The normal Gauß map of maximal spacelike surfaces and its harmonicity are discussed.

Resuspension, Redistribution, And Deposition Of Oil-Residues To Offshore Depocenters After The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Arne R. Diercks, Isabel C. Romero, Rebekka A. Larson, Patrick Schwing, Austin Harris, Samantha Bosman, Jeffrey P. Chanton, Gregg Brooks

Faculty Publications

The focus of this study was to determine the long-term fate of oil-residues from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DwH) oil spill due to remobilization, transport, and re-distribution of oil residue contaminated sediments to down-slope depocenters following initial deposition on the seafloor. We characterized hydrocarbon residues, bulk sediment organic matter, ease of resuspension, sedimentology, and accumulation rates to define distribution patterns in a 14,300 km2 area southeast of the DwH wellhead (1,500 to 2,600 m water depth). Oil-residues from the DwH were detected at low concentrations in 62% of the studied sites at specific sediment layers, denoting episodic deposition of oil-residues …

We aim to develop a deep-learning-based method for automatic proximal femur segmentation in quantitative computed tomography (QCT) images. We proposed a spatial transformation V-Net (ST-V-Net), which contains a V-Net and a spatial transform network (STN) to extract the proximal femur from QCT images. The STN incorporates a shape prior into the segmentation network as a constraint and guidance for model training, which improves model performance and accelerates model convergence. Meanwhile, a multi-stage training strategy is adopted to fine-tune the weights of the ST-V-Net. We performed experiments using a QCT dataset which included 397 QCT subjects. During the experiments for the …

Short-Term Impacts Of 2017 Western North American Wildfires On Meteorology, The Atmosphere's Energy Budget, And Premature Mortality, Diana N. Bernstein, Douglas S. Hamilton, Rosalie Krasnoff, Natalie M. Mahowald, David S. Connelly, Simone Tilmes, Peter G.M. Hess

Faculty Publications

Western North American fires have been increasing in magnitude and severity over the last few decades. The complex coupling of fires with the atmospheric energy budget and meteorology creates short-term feedbacks on regional weather altering the amount of pollution to which Americans are exposed. Using a combination of model simulations and observations, this study shows that the severe fires in the summer of 2017 increased atmospheric aerosol concentrations leading to a cooling of the air at the surface, reductions in sensible heat fluxes, and a lowering of the planetary boundary layer height over land. This combination of lower-boundary layer height …

Application Of Machine Learning Techniques To Forecast Harmful Algal Blooms In Gulf Of Mexico, Bala Tripura Sundari Yerrapothu May 2021

Application Of Machine Learning Techniques To Forecast Harmful Algal Blooms In Gulf Of Mexico, Bala Tripura Sundari Yerrapothu

Master's Theses

The Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) forecast is crucial for the mitigation of health hazards and to inform actions for the protection of ecosystems and fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). For the sake of simplicity of our application we assume ocean color satellite imagery from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as a proxy for HABs.

In this study we use a deep neural network trained on the 2-Dimensional time series proxy data to provide a forecast of the HABs’ manifestations in the GoM.Our approach analyzes between both spatial and temporal features simultaneously. In addition, the network also helps …

Structural Re-Orientation Of Magmatic Fabrics And Layering In The Lower Oceanic Crust: Hole Gt1, Wadi Tayin Massif, Samail Ophiolite, Justin Guillot

Master's Theses

This thesis aims to re-orient borehole images of layered gabbros sampled beneath Hole GT1 in the Wadi Tayin massif of the Oman ophiolite by the Oman Drilling Project to better constrain models of crustal accretion. The gabbro glacier model proposes that crystallized basalt flows down and away from the crystallization site to form the lower crust while the sheeted sill model proposes that basaltic melt crystallizes at multiple levels in the crust through sills. Hole GT1 provides an unprecedented 400 m, 100% recovery, look at the lower oceanic crust. Cores lose their geographic orientation when drilled, requiring use of the …
