The Utility Of Foraminifera In Documenting Sediment Provenance For Overwash Deposits: A Case Study Using Sediments Deposited By Tropical Cyclone Pam In Vanuatu, Thomas Kosciuch Dec 2017

The Utility Of Foraminifera In Documenting Sediment Provenance For Overwash Deposits: A Case Study Using Sediments Deposited By Tropical Cyclone Pam In Vanuatu, Thomas Kosciuch

Master's Theses

Tropical cyclone inundation is a major threat to the highly exposed islands of the South Pacific. This vulnerability was highlighted in March 2015 when Tropical Cyclone (TC) Pam made landfall on Vanuatu as a Category 5 storm, impacting coastlines with storm surges that produced high water marks up to 7 m above MSL and deposited sediments up to 400 m inland. We examined the foraminiferal assemblages contained within TC Pam sediments at two locations in Vanuatu: a mixed-carbonate embayment (Manuro), and a volcaniclastic beach (Port Resolution Bay; PRB). At Manuro, the TC Pam sediments were up to 10 cm thick …

Reassessment Of The Red Drum Stock In Mississippi Coastal Waters: The Role Of Ages 3-5 Year-Class Fish, Emily Satterfield Dec 2017

Reassessment Of The Red Drum Stock In Mississippi Coastal Waters: The Role Of Ages 3-5 Year-Class Fish, Emily Satterfield

Master's Theses

Red Drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, are highly sought after by sport fishermen in Mississippi coastal waters. In 2016, Mississippi anglers made over 180,000 fishing trips targeting Red Drum, making it the second most targeted marine species. The current Fishery Management Plan of the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council, prohibits harvest of Red Drum in federal waters. Monitoring of the stock in Mississippi state waters occurs at sites that are almost exclusively estuarine, using gear types selective for juvenile fish. Additional samples come from the for-hire-industry that typically targets larger Red Drum. This project’s goal was to target age three …

Combined Effects Of Dissolved Oxygen And Temperature On Aerobic Respiration And Respiratory Recovery Responses Of The Spioniform Polychaete, Streblospio Gynobranchiata, In Relation To Body Size, Alyssa Bennett Dec 2017

Combined Effects Of Dissolved Oxygen And Temperature On Aerobic Respiration And Respiratory Recovery Responses Of The Spioniform Polychaete, Streblospio Gynobranchiata, In Relation To Body Size, Alyssa Bennett

Master's Theses

Elevated surface temperatures exacerbate the threat of hypoxia within coastal ecosystems. These two primary stressors likely interact as they elicit opposing physiological responses from marine organisms. Metabolic depression is typically associated with hypoxia, while metabolic rates increase with temperature. Moreover, physiological effects of combined stressors may not be additive. In light of increasing pressures from hypoxia, elevated ocean temperatures, and other stressors within coastal regions, studies need to examine effects of multiple stressors on physiology of coastal organisms.

Mass-specific aerobic respiration (VO2) was characterized as a proxy for metabolic cost of Streblospio gynobranchiata, at combined levels of …

Effects Of Temperature On Growth And Molting In Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) And Lesser Blue Crabs (Callinectes Similis), Abigail Ann Kuhn Dec 2017

Effects Of Temperature On Growth And Molting In Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) And Lesser Blue Crabs (Callinectes Similis), Abigail Ann Kuhn

Master's Theses

Temperature can exert impacts on many processes in ectotherms. With global temperatures rising due to climate change, many ectothermic species may exhibit changes in growth rates and size at maturity, and these changes can have population-level effects. Predicting responses of species to climate change will require not only knowledge of thermal tolerance limits, but also effects of temperature change on growth rates and other life history parameters. For arthropods that exhibit discontinuous growth (i.e., molting), this includes both intermolt period and growth per molt. Previous laboratory and field experiments suggest that temperature affects both intermolt period (IMP) and growth per …

A Case Study In The Application Of Model-Based Systems Engineering To Laboratory Research Science, Brad Crochet

Dissertations

This dissertation presents an exploration of the application of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and methods to the design and execution of sophisticated laboratory experiments. An experiment to measure the first excited state diffusion coefficient, recently attempted by the author, is used as an example. Several MBSE analysis methods are applied, retrospectively, to the process by which the experiment in question was planned and executed. The potential for increased efficiency in managing the diverse types of information associated with such laboratory experiments is demonstrated, as well as possible further avenues for future research.

3d Printing Concrete Structures And Verifying Integrity Of Their G-Code Instructions: Border Wall A Case Study, Jason Breland Dec 2017

3d Printing Concrete Structures And Verifying Integrity Of Their G-Code Instructions: Border Wall A Case Study, Jason Breland

Dissertations

Thanks to advances in Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology and continued research by academics and entrepreneurs alike, the ability to “3d print” permanent concrete structures such as homes or offices is now a reality. Generally, AM is the process that allows for a 3d model of an object to be converted into hardware instructions to generate that object layer by layer using a malleable medium such as a plastic. Specifically, large scale concrete AM can now generate a structure, such as a building, layer by layer more quickly and efficiently than traditional construction methods [6, 39]. This innovative, semi-autonomous process promises …

Air-Processed Polymer Photovoltaics: Advanced Morphological Characterization And Synthesis Of New Materials For Increased Light Absorption, Levi Moore Dec 2017

Air-Processed Polymer Photovoltaics: Advanced Morphological Characterization And Synthesis Of New Materials For Increased Light Absorption, Levi Moore

Dissertations

Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have undergone intense development in recent years due to their potential to produce inexpensive, flexible, lightweight, and portable solar cells utilizing organic photoactive materials. Polymer-based OPVs have recently surpassed the 10 % in laboratory-scale devices, but require strict processing conditions in inert environments. Materials and processing methods that are workable in air are therefore desired. In addition to the light-absorbing and charge transport properties of the active layer materials, the morphology, crystallinity and orientation of the components of the phase-separated blend are paramount in determining OPV device performance This dissertation explores the processing of the model polymer …

Ecological And Oceanographic Influences On Leatherback Turtle Behavior And Scyphozoan Jellyfish Distributions In The Gulf Of Mexico, Katrina Aleksa Dec 2017

Ecological And Oceanographic Influences On Leatherback Turtle Behavior And Scyphozoan Jellyfish Distributions In The Gulf Of Mexico, Katrina Aleksa

Dissertations

Leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are a wide-ranging, oceanic species that feed exclusively on gelatinous zooplankton. Leatherback have been spotted in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) for several decades and consistently had a high level of interactions with longline fisheries. However, no quantitative studies have been performed to address the spatiotemporal distribution of these turtles in the GoM. This research determines 1) leatherback movements and high-use areas in the GoM, 2) their association with oceanographic features, 3) the distribution and density of two abundant medusae in the northern GoM and any association with biophysical parameters, and 4) the body …

Historical Change Of Seagrasses In The Mississippi And Chandeleur Sounds, Linh Thuy Pham Dec 2017

Historical Change Of Seagrasses In The Mississippi And Chandeleur Sounds, Linh Thuy Pham

Dissertations

Seagrasses are important coastal resources facing numerous stressors, and losses have been documented from local to global assessments. Under the broad theme of habitat loss and fragmentation, a study of historical change in total area and landscape configuration of seagrasses in the Mississippi and Chandeleur Sounds was conducted. Mapping data was collated from a multitude of previous projects from 1940 to 2011.

Comparisons of seagrass area among various studies that used different mapping methods can result in overestimation of area change and misleading conclusions of change over time. The vegetated seagrass area (VSA) data were generalized to a common resolution …

Barrier Properties Of Polymer Nanocomposites With Graphene Oxide And Its Derivatives: Mechanism And Applications In Anticorrosive Coatings, Yidan Guan

Dissertations

Metallic devices made from steel or aluminum are subjected to deterioration by environmental contaminants over time. As one of the corrosion control methods, organic coatings show many advantages due to their low cost, versatility, decoration aesthetics and effective protections. Corrosion protection theories and failure modes of organic coatings are still not fully understood due to complicated interactions in the coating-metal-environment system, however, it is widely agreed that the barrier nature of polymeric materials towards aggressive species, such as oxygen, water, electrolyte, plays a key role. Improved barrier property of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) with two-dimensional (2D) carbon filler, graphene and graphene …

Electrophilic Cleavage And Functionalization Of Polyisobutylenes Bearing Unsaturations In The Backbone And Synthesis Of Polymers For This Process, Christopher Campbell Dec 2017

Electrophilic Cleavage And Functionalization Of Polyisobutylenes Bearing Unsaturations In The Backbone And Synthesis Of Polymers For This Process, Christopher Campbell

Dissertations

In the first project, we demonstrated a new reaction, which is a subset of the Friedel‑Crafts alkylation reaction, in which the alkylating carbocation undergoes a cleavage reaction prior to reaction with the aromatic substrate. This reaction was discovered by the observation that when a PIB containing a large amount of coupled fraction was subjected to a mixture of protic and Lewis acids (HCl/TiCl4) in the presence of an alkoxybenzene compound, the coupled fraction was quantitatively converted to its constituent monofunctional chains, which became functionalized by the alkoxybenzene.

In the second project, a commercial polymer, poly(isobutylene-co-isoprene) (butyl …

Radial Basis Function Differential Quadrature Method For The Numerical Solution Of Partial Differential Equations, Daniel Watson Dec 2017

Radial Basis Function Differential Quadrature Method For The Numerical Solution Of Partial Differential Equations, Daniel Watson

Dissertations

In the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs), there is a need for solving large scale problems. The Radial Basis Function Differential Quadrature (RBFDQ) method and local RBF-DQ method are applied for the solutions of boundary value problems in annular domains governed by the Poisson equation, inhomogeneous biharmonic equation, and the inhomogeneous Cauchy-Navier equations of elasticity. By choosing the collocation points properly, linear systems can be obtained so that the coefficient matrices have block circulant structures. The resulting systems can be efficiently solved using matrix decomposition algorithms (MDAs) and fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). For the local RBFDQ method, the …

The Impact Of Fe-Ti Oxide Concentration On The Structural Ridgity Of The Lower Oceanic Crust, Atlantis Bank, Southwest Indian Ridge, Daniel Winkler Dec 2017

The Impact Of Fe-Ti Oxide Concentration On The Structural Ridgity Of The Lower Oceanic Crust, Atlantis Bank, Southwest Indian Ridge, Daniel Winkler

Master's Theses

Fe-Ti oxides are important components of oceanic core complexes (OCC) formed at slow-spreading mid-ocean ridges since Fe-Ti oxides are more susceptible to crystal-plastic deformation than silicate minerals. This study investigated the predicted relationship between the presence and concentration of Fe-Ti oxides and the presence and intensity of crystal-plastic deformation in gabbroic samples from Atlantis Bank, Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR). Atlantis Bank is an oceanic core complex that formed through the exhumation of lower oceanic crust along a detachment fault. OCCs form along slow-spreading ridges and are characterized by the complex interactions between magmatism and lithospheric extension, thus making these complexes …

Environmentally-Driven Variation In The Population Dynamics Of Gulf Menhaden (Brevoortia Patronus), Grant D. Adams Aug 2017

Environmentally-Driven Variation In The Population Dynamics Of Gulf Menhaden (Brevoortia Patronus), Grant D. Adams

Master's Theses

Gulf Menhaden (Brevoortia patronus) is an abundant forage fish distributed throughout the Northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM). Gulf Menhaden support the second largest fishery, by weight, in the United States and represent a key linkage between upper and lower trophic levels. Variation in the population dynamics can, therefore, pose consequences for the ecology and economy in the NGOM. Here we aim to understand variation in the individual and population dynamics of Gulf Menhaden throughout ontogeny and how such variation relates to environmental processes. We utilized a suite of fishery-dependent and –independent, remote sensing, modeled, and in situ data …

Textural Analysis Of Historical Aerial Photography To Determine Change In Coastal Marsh Extent: Site Of The Present-Day Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (Gbnerr), Mississippi, 1955-2014, Heather Michelle Nicholson Aug 2017

Textural Analysis Of Historical Aerial Photography To Determine Change In Coastal Marsh Extent: Site Of The Present-Day Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (Gbnerr), Mississippi, 1955-2014, Heather Michelle Nicholson

Master's Theses

Coastal marshlands are among the world’s most highly productive ecosystems but they have diminished greatly in the past several decades owing to sea-level rise and direct anthropogenic influences. An effective means of quantifying loss or gain in marsh area is through the use of aerial image data, which offers synoptic views of the landscape at decadal-scale sampling frequencies. However, a potential problem with older panchromatic, or black-and-white, imagery is the absence of multispectral information that might be used otherwise in remote identification of vegetation types. Nevertheless, the analysis of horizontal variability in image brightness values, or image texture, can be …

Sedimentary Characteristics And Nutrient Sequestration Of Embanked Floodplains Along The Lower Mississippi River, Mississippi And Louisiana, R M Malitha Rathnayake Aug 2017

Sedimentary Characteristics And Nutrient Sequestration Of Embanked Floodplains Along The Lower Mississippi River, Mississippi And Louisiana, R M Malitha Rathnayake

Master's Theses

The Mississippi River Basin is the largest river basin in North America and the third largest river basin in the world. Most of the corn, soybeans, wheat, cattle, and hogs harvested in the United States come from the Mississippi River Basin and about 58% of the entire drainage basin is croplands. Runoff from these lands carries sediments and nutrients, and the Mississippi River transports these downstream and ultimately deposits them in the Gulf of Mexico. The northern Gulf of Mexico is one of largest human-caused hypoxic zones in the world. Hypoxia is the phenomena where the dissolved oxygen level decreases …

Eignefunctions For Partial Differential Equations On Two-Dimensional Domains With Piecewise Constant Coefficients, Abdullah Muheel Momit Aurko Aug 2017

Eignefunctions For Partial Differential Equations On Two-Dimensional Domains With Piecewise Constant Coefficients, Abdullah Muheel Momit Aurko

Master's Theses

In this thesis, we develop a highly accurate and efficient algorithm for computing the solution of a partial differential equation defined on a two-dimensional domain with discontinuous coefficients. An example of such a problem is for modeling the diffusion of heat energy in two space dimensions, in the case where the spatial domain represents a medium consisting of two different but homogeneous materials, with periodic boundary conditions.

Since diffusivity changes based on the material, it will be represented using a piecewise constant function, and this results in the formation of a complicated mathematical model. Such a model is impossible to …

While Twitter has been touted to provide up-to-date information about hazard events, the relevance and reliability of tweets is yet to be tested. This research examined the relevance and reliability of risk information extracted from Twitter during the 2013 Colorado floods using five different approaches. The first approach examined the relationship between tweet volume and precipitation amount. The second approach explored the relationship between geo-tagged tweets and degree of damage. In the third approach, the spatiotemporal distribution of tweets was compared with flood extent. In the fourth approach, risk information from tweets were compared with survey responses obtained in a …

Synthesis And Catalytic Evaluation Of Novel C-Alpha-Methyl-Beta-Proline Analogues, And Concise Synthetic Approach To Nh-Fmoc-S-Trityl-C-Alpha-Methyl Cysteine, Hari Kiran Kotapati Aug 2017

Synthesis And Catalytic Evaluation Of Novel C-Alpha-Methyl-Beta-Proline Analogues, And Concise Synthetic Approach To Nh-Fmoc-S-Trityl-C-Alpha-Methyl Cysteine, Hari Kiran Kotapati

Dissertations

In the field of chemistry there is a growing demand for small molecule organocatalysts such as amino acids, more specifically proline and its analogues, which could catalyze various key chemical reactions in the synthesis of several biologically important molecules. Even though natural proline is reported to catalyze various chemical reactions, its use as organocatalyst is limited mainly due to the solubility issues in the reaction media and high catalyst loadings, which is not very ideal for bulk scale manufacturing. To address these limitations we planned to develop unnatural analogues of proline that could catalyze the reactions with lower catalyst loadings …

This dissertation explored and investigated the coreactant electrogenerated chemiluminescent (ECL) properties of unmixed and mixed systems of highly efficient ECL emitters, such as 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA), rubrene (RUB), and tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) [(Ru(bpy)32+)] species as well as their water-soluble derivatives, which can serve as ECL labels for sensitive bioanalysis of single or multiple analytes. The screening of most favorable common ECL coreactants, their concentration effects along with the effect of working electrode materials on ECL behavior, and energy transfer related interactions between ECL emitters were systematically investigated. In addition, a strategy for improvement of ECL signals with the use of …

Numerical Solution Of Partial Differential Equations Using Polynomial Particular Solutions, Thir R. Dangal Aug 2017

Numerical Solution Of Partial Differential Equations Using Polynomial Particular Solutions, Thir R. Dangal

Dissertations

Polynomial particular solutions have been obtained for certain types of partial differential operators without convection terms. In this dissertation, a closed-form particular solution for more general partial differential operators with constant coefficients has been derived for polynomial basis functions. The newly derived particular solutions are further coupled with the method of particular solutions (MPS) for numerically solving a large class of elliptic partial differential equations. In contrast to the use of Chebyshev polynomial basis functions, the proposed approach is more flexible in selecting the collocation points inside the domain. Polynomial basis functions are well-known for yielding ill-conditioned systems when their …

The challenge to commercialize DFAFCs is primarily the utilization of cost effective, high performance and durable anodic catalyst for formic acid oxidation (FAO). Consequently, this dissertation addresses the extensive electrochemical study of a number of nanomaterials towards the potential use as electrocatalysts for FAO. Morphology and elemental analyses of the prepared nanomaterials were obtained using electron microscopy techniques.

After a general introduction and overall review of this dissertation (Chapter I), studies of …

Finite Element Maximum Entropy Method For Approximating Absolutely Continuous Invariant Measures, Tulsi Upadhyay Aug 2017

Finite Element Maximum Entropy Method For Approximating Absolutely Continuous Invariant Measures, Tulsi Upadhyay

Dissertations

In a chaotic dynamical system, the eventual behavior of iterates of initial points of a map is unpredictable even though the map is deterministic. A system which is chaotic in a deterministic point of view may be regular in a statistical viewpoint. The statistical viewpoint requires the study of absolutely continuous invariant measure (ACIM) of a map with respect to the Lebesgue measure. An invariant density of the Frobenius-Perron (F-P) operator associated with a nonsingular map is employed to evaluate an ACIM of the map. The ACIM is a key factor for studying the eventual behavior of iterates of almost …

Cellulose Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites By In-Situ Ring-Opening Polymerization, Shahab Kashani Rahimi Aug 2017

Cellulose Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites By In-Situ Ring-Opening Polymerization, Shahab Kashani Rahimi

Dissertations

Over the past two decades, the increasing concern about the negative environmental impacts of synthetic materials has led to rising interests in utilizing renewable natural resources to develop polymer materials with comparable properties and performance to their synthetic counterparts. One of the major fields of interest is polymer composites where the replacement of synthetic fibers with bio renewable natural fibers is of great potential. However, the processing difficulties, in terms of fiber dispersion and thermal stability have limited the application of cellulosic fibers to polymers with low processing temperatures which are mostly hydrophobic polymers. As a result, the true reinforcing …

Property Morphology Correlations Of Organic Semiconductor Nanowires, Frederick Marshall Mcfarland Aug 2017

Property Morphology Correlations Of Organic Semiconductor Nanowires, Frederick Marshall Mcfarland

Dissertations

Chemically doped and non-doped P3HT nanoaggregates are studied to establish a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between their morphology and various optoelectronic properties. One-dimensional nanoaggregates of P3HT are chosen as the model systems here due to their high surface/volume ratio and suitability for microscopic investigations.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) are used to correlate property/morphology characteristics of non-doped P3HT nanowhiskers. Topographical measurements indicate that individually folded P3HT motifs stack via interfacial interactions to form nanowhiskers in solution. Further aging leads to multi-layered nanowhiskers with greater stability and less instances of π-π sliding of interfacial edge-on …

Solution Of Pdes For First-Order Photobleaching Kinetics Using Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods, Somayyeh Sheikholeslami Aug 2017

Solution Of Pdes For First-Order Photobleaching Kinetics Using Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods, Somayyeh Sheikholeslami

Dissertations

We solve the first order reaction-diffusion equations which describe binding-diffusion kinetics using a photobleaching scanning profile of a confocal laser scanning microscope approximated by a Gaussian laser profile. We show how to solve these equations with prebleach steady-state initial conditions using a time-domain method known as a Krylov Subspace Spectral (KSS) method. KSS methods are explicit methods for solving time- dependent variable-coefficient partial differential equations (PDEs). KSS methods are advantageous compared to other methods because of their stability and their superior scalability. These advantages are obtained by applying Gaussian quadrature rules in the spectral domain developed by Golub and Meurant. …

Efficient Denoising And Sharpening Of Color Images Through Numerical Solution Of Nonlinear Diffusion Equations, Linh T. Duong May 2017

Efficient Denoising And Sharpening Of Color Images Through Numerical Solution Of Nonlinear Diffusion Equations, Linh T. Duong

Honors Theses

The purpose of this project is to enhance color images through denoising and sharpening, two important branches of image processing, by mathematically modeling the images. Modifications are made to two existing nonlinear diffusion image processing models to adapt them to color images. This is done by treating the red, green, and blue (RGB) channels of color images independently, contrary to the conventional idea that the channels should not be treated independently. A new numerical method is needed to solve our models for high resolution images since current methods are impractical. To produce an efficient method, the solution is represented as …

Age, Growth, And Reproduction Of Vermilion Snapper (Rhomboplites Aurorubens) In The North-Central Gulf Of Mexico, Trevor Dalton Moncrief May 2017

Age, Growth, And Reproduction Of Vermilion Snapper (Rhomboplites Aurorubens) In The North-Central Gulf Of Mexico, Trevor Dalton Moncrief

Master's Theses

Vermilion Snapper is a commonly harvested species of reef fish in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM). It supports both a large commercial and popular recreational fishery, however knowledge of this fish’s life history is limited spatially. Non-linear curve fitting was used to estimate growth parameters and Akaike information criteria (AIC) was used to determine relative model fit. The 2-parameter von Bertalanffy growth function provided the best model fit and lowest AIC score. Histological examination indicated that Vermilion Snapper are batch spawners with asynchronous oocyte development. Additionally, 17% of Vermilion Snapper in the actively spawning phase containing 24 hour POF’s …

Synthesis Of A Thermally Reversible Cross-Linked System Using Electrophilic Cleavage/Functionalization Of Poly(Isobutylene-Co-Isoprene), Savannah H. Steadman May 2017

Synthesis Of A Thermally Reversible Cross-Linked System Using Electrophilic Cleavage/Functionalization Of Poly(Isobutylene-Co-Isoprene), Savannah H. Steadman

Honors Theses

Multifunctional polyisobutylenes (PIBs) are of great academic and commercial interest. Current methods to create these materials currently utilize prohibitively expensive synthetic strategies. Recently, Storey et al. reported a novel method for the synthesis of multifunctional PIB which is more commercially viable than the current methods. For this research, the material produced via this technique was utilized to create a thermally reversible crosslinked system using Diels-Alder chemistry. To achieve this, a bromide-functional polyisobutylene obtained via electrophilic cleavage and functionalization of butyl rubber was split into two portions and further functionalized. The first portion of the bromide-functional PIB was reacted with furfuryl …

Paleoecological Analysis Of The Clayton Formation (Paleocene) Near Malvern, Arkansas, Brenna J. Hart May 2017

Paleoecological Analysis Of The Clayton Formation (Paleocene) Near Malvern, Arkansas, Brenna J. Hart

Honors Theses

The Clayton Formation is a section of the Midway Group immediately above the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary that contains marine fossils from the Paleocene Epoch. The formation is composed of glauconitic sand, clay, marl, and limestone. Fossils within the formation commonly occur in clay or are concentrated in conglomeratic lag lenses. To assess paleoecology of the region during the Paleocene, the Clayton Formation was sampled for fossil content at a distinctly visible exposure along Interstate 30 near Malvern, Arkansas, that was excavated as part of a landslide mitigation project. Complimentary sites were sampled nearby along the Ouachita River and behind a shopping …
