Experimental Metamorphic Petrology, Joseph V. Chernosky Jr. Jan 1979

Experimental Metamorphic Petrology, Joseph V. Chernosky Jr.

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Since Bowen and Tuttle's pioneering study of the system MgO-SiO2-H2O in 1949, advances in experimental metamorphic petrology have occurred steadily rather than in “leaps and bounds”. The number and quality of papers published during the past quadrennium, 1975–1978, attests to the health of the science. Although the purpose of this report is to focus international attention on the U.S. effort in experimental metamorphic petrology, some papers published by foreign experimentalists have been included, especially where their contributions complement those made in the U.S. To keep the review current, abstracts of papers read at national meetings of …

Pattern Of Ice Surface Lowering For Rennick Glacier, Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, Paul Andrew Mayewski, John W. Tattig Jr., David J. Drewry Jan 1979

Pattern Of Ice Surface Lowering For Rennick Glacier, Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, Paul Andrew Mayewski, John W. Tattig Jr., David J. Drewry

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Rennick Glacier is one of the major ice drainages in northern Victoria Land. Unlike glaciers farther south along the Transantarctic Mountains, Rennick Glacier does not drain into the Ross Ice Shelf but flows directly into a seasonally ice-covered ocean. Therefore, current fluctuations of this glacier are unhampered by the dampening effects of the Ross lee Shelf. The primary controls on the activity of this glacier and others in this region are mass balance and sea-level.

Two major glacial events are recorded in the upper Rennick Glacier region. The location of erratics and glacially scoured features suggest that during the oldest …

Himalayan And Trans-Himalayan Glacier Fluctuations Since Ad 1812, Paul Andrew Mayewski, Peter A. Jeschke Jan 1979

Himalayan And Trans-Himalayan Glacier Fluctuations Since Ad 1812, Paul Andrew Mayewski, Peter A. Jeschke

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Historical records of the fluctuations of glaciers in the Himalayas and Trans-Himalayas date back to the early 19th century. Local and regional syntheses of 112 of these fluctuation records are presented in this study. The local syntheses deal with fluctuations of glaciers in Kanchenjunga-Everest, Garwhal, Lahaul-Spiti, Kolahoi, Nanga Parbat, Karakoram (north and south sides), Rakaposhi-Haramosh, Batura Mustagh, and Khunjerab-Ghujerab. Regional syntheses deal with the composite record and the differentiation of records by glacier type (longitudinal versus transverse) and regional setting (Himalayan versus Trans-Himalayan). In a gross regional sense Himalayan and Trans-Himalayan glaciers have been in a general state of retreat …

Glaciology And Glacio-Geomorphology In Victoria Landand Queen Maud Mountains, Paul Andrew Mayewski Jan 1979

Glaciology And Glacio-Geomorphology In Victoria Landand Queen Maud Mountains, Paul Andrew Mayewski

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

During the past year, data analysis has been under-taken on the recent and past dynamics of several northern Victoria Land glaciers, notably Rennick Glacier; the dynamics of selected rock glaciers in Wright Valley; and on the weathering characteristics of dolorites in the Queen Maud Mountains.
