Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

As the traditional electricity grid transitions to the smart grid (SG), some emerging issues such as increased renewable energy penetration in the power system that cause load unbalances require new control methods. Storage of energy seems to be the best option to struggle with such issues. In this manner, energy storage technologies ensure the operating flexibility of the distribution system operator in the power system in terms of both sustainability of energy and peak load balancing. In this study, a grid condition monitoring user-interface and control algorithm is developed for the peak load reduction and supply-demand balancing in a SG …

With the increase in prosperity level and industrialization, energy need continues to overgrow in many countries. To meet the rapidly increasing energy needs, countries attach great importance to using limited natural resources rationally, diversifying their energy production using novel technologies, improving the efficiency of existing technologies, and implementing policies and strategies toward alternative energy sources. In particular, individual energy prosumers (someone that both produces and consumes energy) head toward smart home energy management systems (SHEMS) that include renewable energy sources in their homes. By integrating PV solar panels into houses, there is a need to optimize home energy production/consumption scenarios …

Estimating Synthetic Load Profile Based On Student Behavior Using Fuzzy Inference System For Demand Side Management Application, Nadhirah Omar, Mohd Aifaa Mohd Ariff, Ainnur Farah Izzati Mohd Shah, Muhammad Syafiq Anwar Mustaza

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes a novel approach of estimating synthetic load profiles based on the electrical usage behavior using the fuzzy inference system (FIS) for demand side management (DSM). In practice, DSM is utilized to change the pattern of electrical energy consumed by end-users to modify the load profile by manipulating the price of the electricity. This study focuses on the energy consumption consumed by students who are paying electricity bills indirectly. Therefore, the effectiveness of conventional DSM methods on this user requires further investigation. In this study, the FIS estimates the synthetic load profile based on the student?s behavior profile. …

Reduction Of Pmus Via Hybrid Pmu-Rtu Communication Changeover In The Case Of Cyberattack On Vulnerable Power Transmission Lines, Noorollah Fardad, Soodabeh Soleymani, Faramarz Faghihi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A power grid strictly depends on information and communication technology. The key role of real-time measurement and information control for the reliable operation of a power grid is the responsibility of the phase measurement units (PMUs). As smart power grids encounter a variety of unauthorized malicious accesses such as cyberattacks, PMU placement is an important problem. In this study, a new algorithm was proposed to specify the minimum number of PMUs in the case of cyberattacks on their communication lines and equipment. In order to analyze complete observability of the distribution system, a range of probable contingencies for the vulnerable …

Performance Analysis Of Hamming Code For Wsn-Based Smart Grid Applications, Meli̇ke Yi̇ği̇t, Vehbi̇ Çağri Güngör, Pinar Bölük

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Many methods have been employed to detect, compare, and correct errors to increase communication reliability and efficiency in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). However, to the best of our knowledge, no existing study has compared the performance of error control codes by using different modulation techniques in a smart grid communication environment when multichannel scheduling is used. This paper presents a detailed performance evaluation and makes a comparison of different modulation techniques, such as frequency shift keying (FSK), differential phase shift keying (DPSK), binary phase shift keying (BPSK), and offset quadrature phase-shift keying (OQPSK), using Hamming codes in a 500-kV line-of-sight …

Rlgc(F) Modeling Of A Busbar Distribution System Via Measured S-Parameters Atcenelec And Fcc Bands, Zeynep Hasirci, İsmai̇l Hakki Çavdar, Mehmet Öztürk

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper addresses the extraction of accurate frequency-dependent per-unit-length RLGC parameters for busbar distribution systems using measured S-parameters for the CENELEC and FCC bands. A busbar is a distribution system element (three phase, low voltage) with a modular structure that carries electrical energy in buildings. The S-parameters of a busbar distribution system at different current levels (630 A, 1250 A, 2000 A) are measured with a vector network analyzer and then analyzed for three different two-port connections (L1-N, L2-N, L3-N). A frequency- dependent RLGC(f) model is used to characterize the busbar as a transmission line using a derivative-free optimization algorithm. …

A Novel Generation And Capacitor Integration Technique For Today's Distribution Systems, Okan Özgönenel, Serap Karagöl

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, the problem of optimally placing shunt capacitors and generators in radial distribution systems is handled and a new calculation technique based on wavelet neural network (WNN), which is computationally effective compared to well-known techniques, is proposed. The objectives for the proposed method are simply selected as the minimum cost of peak power and losses and maximum voltage stability. The suggested optimization technique is tested on various IEEE radial buses and then compared to the well-known methods in the literature, i.e. golden section search, grid search, and Acharya's heuristic method. The proposed and conventional methods are applied to …

Communications Protocol For Power Management In Smart Homes, Milan Bjelica, Mirjana Simic Pejovic

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Emergency situations, incentives for energy efficiency, new pricing plans, and distributed electricity market jointly require home automation systems that would conform an instantaneous load to a dynamically set limit. In this paper, a novel machine-to-machine communications protocol that interconnects a smart grid and smart house is described. ''Intelligent'' domestic appliances use it to coordinate their switch-on times so that the assigned power quota will not be exceeded. In this way, the end-user experience can be improved by reducing the electricity bills, conveniently conforming to prepaid pricing plans, or even by providing continued service at possibly reduced consumption levels during power …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Growing complexity of conventional power grids and their management, increasing power demand and energy quality expectations considering grid reliability, and efficiency and security concerns have triggered the evolution of smart grids. This is an expected result of implementing new technologies in existing grids, including renewable sources such as wind turbines and photovoltaic modules. With implementation of such new elements to the system, the protection concept should be considered by system regulators. In order to analyze protection problems, simulation-based analysis should be carried out before high-cost experimental studies. In this study, a simulation-based evaluation for a smart grid-based distribution system is …

In this paper we propose an improved adaptive media access (MAC) layer routing algorithm for the broadband power line communication (BPLC) access network founded on the fixed basic approach routing algorithm, which is integrated within the IEEE P1901 standard. The proposed adaptive algorithm incorporates a new dynamically scaled threshold for the selection of the next hop station based on the information from the physical layer. Furthermore, the procedures for the route and the time allocation modifications during the connection setup and later adjustments are developed. Simulation of the new adaptive and existing fixed routing algorithm is performed on the model …
