Turkish Journal of Chemistry

This paper reports effects of ultraviolet (UV) light radiation on the physicochemical, electrical and mechanical properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) cable insulating materials. Changes in structural and morphological properties of UV-aged samples were characterized by various analytical methods such as attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATRFTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Additionally, elongation at break, tensile strength, dielectric strength, and optical properties were also evaluated. Changes in some physical properties of LDPE after exposing to UV irradiation clearly highlighted that the polymer underwent the structural degradation. In addition, it was also …

The Role Of Some Metal Ions In Enhancement Of Photocatalytic Activity Of Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$-V$_{2}$O$_{5}$Binary Oxide, Eda Sinirtaş İlkme, Güli̇n Selda Pozan Soylu

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$-V$_{2}$O$_{5}$ mixed oxides were synthesized with solid-state dispersion (SSD) and coprecipitation methods. In addition, transition metal oxides such as CuO, NiO, and Co$_{3}$O$_{4}$ were successfully loaded on the synthesized catalyst (Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$-V$_{2}$O$_{5}$) using the SSD method. The composite catalysts were inspected for their photocatalytic activities in degrading 2,4-dichlorophenol under UV light enforcement. The produced samples were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, photoluminescence, and the Brunauer-Emmett- Teller method. The addition of transition metal oxides improved the photocatalytic activity of Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$-V$_{2}$O$_{5}$5 (SSD). 1CuO wt% Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$-V$_{2}$O$_{5}$ exhibited the highest percentage of 2,4-dichlorophenol …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In this study, amidoxime-functionalized silica decorated with copper (AFS-Cu) was fabricated and tested for its catalytic application. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction were employed to characterize its structure and morphology. The application of AFS-Cu as a catalyst for the catalytic reduction of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous media using NaBH$_{4}$ as reductant was evaluated. The ability to reuse as well as the effect of catalyst dose and pH of solution on the catalytic activity was investigated. The reduction of MB followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and the rate constant (k) was 0.6224 min$^{-1}$. …

Quercetin Enhances Vitamin D2 Stability And Mitigate The Degradation Influenced By Elevated Temperature And Ph Value, Sukkum Ngullie Chang, Jeong Jun Lee, Hyun Jin Kim, Sun Chul Kang

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Vitamin D2 (vit. D2) is a nutraceutical essentially needed for good health. However, it is susceptible to oxygen and high temperature. The use of natural products such as bioflavonoids possessing anti-degradative effect of vit. D2 degradation has not been described before. A combinational effect of vit. D2 with quercetin showed a positive effect and inhibited vit. D2 degradation when exposed to high temperature (50 oC and 75 oC) at different time points. The results obtained revealed vit. D2 degradation was drastically increased with longer incubation under thermal treatment. However, quercetin and vit. D2 groups were able to significantly inhibit the …

Photocatalytic Decomposition Of Textile Dyestuffs By Photosensitive Metal Oxide Catalysts, Esra Yeli̇z Altun, Zehra Tuba Şi̇şmanoğlu, Güli̇n Selda Pozan Soylu

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Textile azo dyes are one of the pollutants in waste water that adversely affect human and environmental health. Removal of these chemicals from wastewater is important for eco-system and human health. In this study, Bi2O3 nanoflakes and ZnO were synthesized by the co-precipitation method. Adsorption and photocatalytic degradation reactions were carried out to remove dyes (Victoria blue (VB) and Malachite green (MG)) from wastewater with the photocatalysts. In order to improve the activity of catalysts, cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB) was added as a surfactant to pure oxide structures, and Bi2O3-CTAB and ZnO-CTAB catalysts were prepared. The structural and morphological properties of these …

Synthesis And Spectroscopic Characterization Of New Phthalocyanine Derivatives: Application As Photocatalysts For The Degradation Of Orange G, Yusuf Yilmaz, Kayode Sanusi

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

New derivatives of 2(3),9(10),16(17),23(24)-tetrakis-(6-methylpyridin-2-yloxy)phthalocyanine (Pc) (2b, 2c, and 2d) were synthesized and their structures were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, $^{1}$H NMR, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The spectral results were in line with the proposed structures. The photodegradation of Orange G (OG) dye in DMSO by the Pc derivatives was investigated. The compounds showed relatively high photodegradation rates that increased with increasing size of the central atoms. The Pc photodegradation rates showed fair correlation with the singlet oxygen generation efficiencies (${\Phi }_{{\Delta }})$. The observed rate constants were higher than the values already reported for other Pcs in the literature …

Distinct Degradation Processes In Zno Varistors: Reliability Analysis And Modeling With Accelerated Ac Tests, Hadi Yadavari, Mustafa Altun Jan 2017

Distinct Degradation Processes In Zno Varistors: Reliability Analysis And Modeling With Accelerated Ac Tests, Hadi Yadavari, Mustafa Altun

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, we investigate different degradation mechanisms of zinc oxide (ZnO) varistors. We propose a model that shows how Vv (defined as DC varistor voltage when a 1-mA DC current is applied) changes with time for different stress levels. For this purpose, accelerated degradation tests are applied for different AC current levels and voltage values are then measured. Different from the common practice in the literature that considers degradation with only decreasing Vv values, we demonstrate either an increasing or a decreasing trend in the Vv parameter. The tests show a decreasing trend in Vv for current levels above …
