Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Supramolecular solvent-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction technique has been developed as a preconcentration tool for the determination of trace level of Pb2+ and Cd2+. Dodecanol dispersed in tetrahydrofuran has been utilized as a supramolecular-solvent system for the extraction of analytes prior to their quantitative determination with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Both Pb2+ and Cd2+, which were efficiently extracted by supramolecular solvent system, were complexed with dithizone followed by the addition of supramolecular solvent. The experimental variables that could possibly influence the extraction efficiency, i.e. pH value, temperature, sample volume, centrifugation time, rate of centrifugation, ionic strength, etc. were subjected to …

Colorimetric Cadmium Ion Detection In Aqueous Solutions By Newly Synthesized Schiff Bases, Zi̇ya Aydin, Mustafa Keleş

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Two newly synthesized Schiff bases DMCA and DMBA were used for selective detection of Cd$^{2+}$ over a wide range of other metal ions in acetonitrile (ACN)/ Tris-HCl buffer (10 mM, pH 7.32, v/v 2:1). The sensors can detect Cd$^{2+}$ ions by colour changes from colourless to orange for DMBA and yellow to reddish for DMCA. Response of the probes towards metal ions was investigated by using UV-vis spectroscopy. The complex stoichiometry between the sensors, DMBA and DMCA, and Cd$^{2+}$ was found to be 2:1 and the binding constants were calculated to be 2.65 x 10$^{12}$ M$^{-2\, }$and 4.95 x 10$^{12}$ …

The effect of the preconcentration parameters was investigated. Good recoveries ranging from 95% to 102% with relative standard deviations of 3.2% and 2.8% for Cd$^{2+}$ and Pb$^{2+}$, respectively, were obtained, indicating high accuracy and precision. The limits of detection were 0.2 and …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A magnetic Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ @ montmorillonite composite was prepared and used for the separation of lead and cadmium from aqueous solutions. For this purpose, magnetite (Fe$_{3}$O$_{4})$ was generated by co-precipitation of FeSO$_{4}$ and FeCl$_{3}$ onto montmorillonite. The effects of various experimental parameters such as pH of the solution, amount of sorbent, initial concentration of analytes, and contact time on the sorption efficiencies of lead and cadmium ions were investigated and optimized by applying a batch technique. The concentrations of analytes were determined by high resolution continuum source flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The maximum adsorption occurred at pH 2.0. The adsorption capacity …

Analytical Capabilities Of Two-Phase Hollow-Fiber Liquid Phase Microextraction For Trace Multielement Determination In Aqueous Samples By Means Of Portable Total Reflection X-Ray Instrumentation, Eva Margui, Manuela Hidalgo

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Liquid phase microextraction (LPME) procedures have been widely used in combination with atomic and emission spectroscopic techniques for the isolation and preconcentration of trace elements. However, its application in combination with total reflection X-ray spectrometry (TXRF) is still scarce. In this paper, we evaluate the possibilities and drawbacks of a two-phase hollow fiber LPME procedure in combination with TXRF for the simultaneous determination of trace amounts of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd in aqueous samples. After extraction of the analytes by using the optimum conditions (sample volume: 25 mL, complexing agent: APDC, organic solvent: hexylbenzene, extraction time: 2 …

The main steps of the procedure, extraction, filtration, and detection were conducted online. Parameters that influence the experimental conditions of online preconcentration systems were examined, including pH, concentration of reagent and surfactant, and flow of sample and eluent. The limit of detection of the method is 0.2 $\mu $g L$^{-1}$. The …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Flow injection cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (FI-CVAAS) was used for determination of cadmium in high salt matrices such as dialysis concentrates and textile leach solutions. The parameters such as acidity, concentration of reducing agent, reaction coil length, and carrier gas flow rate were investigated to obtain the best sensitivity. No significant background signal was observed even at high salt concentrations. Under the optimized conditions the limit of detection value (3s_b m^{-1}, where s_b is the standard deviation of the blank signals and m is the slope of the calibration graph) was found to be 0.05 ng mL^{-1} for an …

Evaluation Of Thermodynamic Parameters Of Cadmium Adsorption On Sand From Temkin Adsorption Isotherm, Abdul Sattar Ali Khan Jan 2012

Evaluation Of Thermodynamic Parameters Of Cadmium Adsorption On Sand From Temkin Adsorption Isotherm, Abdul Sattar Ali Khan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Thermodynamic parameters provide clues for finding the spontaneity of a given process at a given temperature. In the present work, the Temkin adsorption model was applied for evaluation of the thermodynamic parameters of cadmium adsorption studied on sand. The lateral interaction energy parameter was found to be unity, which showed that the heat of adsorption is directly proportional to the fraction of free adsorption sites. The values of \Delta H° and \Delta S° were --4.8 kJ mol^{-1} and 42 J mol^{-1} K^{-1}, respectively. The value of \Delta G° was negative, indicating the spontaneity of cadmium adsorption on sand.

Optimal analytical conditions were as follows: ligand concentration of 11 nM, pH of 9.5, and an adsorption potential at --300 mV versus Ag/AgCl, with an accumulation time of 60 s. The peak currents are proportional to the concentration of copper and cadmium over the …

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of D-Glucose Using A Cd Ad-Atom-Modified Au(111) Electrode In Alkaline Solution, Zekerya Dursun, Sami Ben Aoun, Isao Taniguchi

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Au(111) single crystal electrodes were modified by underpotential deposition (UPD) of Cd ad-atoms with different coverages, which were used for the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose in alkaline media. The catalytic activity of the electrodes was dependent on how the Cd ad-atoms covered the surface. Under the presented experimental conditions the monolayer (ML) Cd ad-atom-covered Au(111) electrode had the best catalytic activity on D-glucose oxidation, in terms of both potential shifts and peak current increases, as compared to the 0.11, 0.5, and 2 ML covered and bare Au(111) electrodes. Double layer capacity measurements revealed that the shifts of the potential of …

Determination Of Cadmium By Faas After Solid-Phase Extraction Of Its 1-Benzylpiperazinedithiocarbamate Complex On Microcrystalline Naphthalene, Hasan Cesur, Beki̇r Bati

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

By using 1-benzylpiperazinedithiocarbamate (1-BPzDC) as a new reagent, a method of solid-phase extraction is described for the pre-concentration of cadmium in water samples prior to its determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). This method is based on the fact that cadmium forming in aqueous phase cadmium 1-benzylpiperazinedithiocarbamate complex (Cd(1-BPzDC)_{2}) can be extracted with microcrystalline naphthalene on solid phase, then back-extracted with potassium cyanide solution into aqueous phase and measured by FAAS. The optimum experimental parameters for the extraction and back-extraction of cadmium were investigated. The obtained recovery was nearly 97% when the enrichment factor was 500 for spiked cadmium …
