The karst which has developed on the widespread Mississippian gypsum-anhydrite deposits of the Canadian Maritime provinces is described. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have large areas displaying all stages of erosion from drift covered through to cockpit karst. Caves are common, but small. Their morphological features, including certain forms that have not been reported before, are catalogued and described, and the nature of gypsum speleogenesis in the region is discussed. Cave passages are dominated by laughohlen ("leaching caves"), defined in the classic German South Harz gypsum region. These forms are probably atypical and relatively rare elsewhere.
