A Computational Study Of Adsorptive Desulfurization In Metal Organic Frameworks, Kyle Concha May 2023

A Computational Study Of Adsorptive Desulfurization In Metal Organic Frameworks, Kyle Concha

Theses

Fossil fuel usage has been related to several concerns about the environment and human health. One of these concerns is related to fuels containing Organic Sulfur Compounds (OSCs) which upon burning produce hazardous compounds such as SO2 which contributes to acid rain and affects respiratory health. Removal of these OSCs is an important field of study as it can prevent the production of SOx compounds. One technique to remove OSCs is Adsorptive Desulfurization (ADS) in which Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are potential candidates to be used as adsorbents. Two archetypal MOFs, HKUST-1 and Cu3HHTP2, …

Nanocarbon Immobilized Membrane For Separation And Analysis, Madhuleena Bhadra May 2014

Nanocarbon Immobilized Membrane For Separation And Analysis, Madhuleena Bhadra

Dissertations

Membrane processes classically cover a wide range of applications associated with various aspects of separation and purification. Over the last few years, membrane based processes have received much interest due to their compact and modular architecture, low energy consumption and cost effective separation. With the development of diverse nanomaterials which can serve as nanosorbents, or provide specific morphology for selective solute transport, recent years have witnessed the emergence of nanocarbon based membranes that can address some of the limitations of conventional membrane processes and make feasible the next generation of breakthroughs.

The objective of this research is the exploration of …

Novel Synthesis Of 2-Methyl-3, 4, 5-Trichloropyrimidine, Daniel M. Goldman May 2002

Novel Synthesis Of 2-Methyl-3, 4, 5-Trichloropyrimidine, Daniel M. Goldman

Theses

A one-step synthesis of the heterocycle 2-methyl-3,4,5-trichloropyrimidine by the cycloaddition of hexachloropropene with acetamidine hydrochloride in methanolic NaOH was attempted. The product was dark amber oil. A by-product of this reaction was sodium chloride. The proposed reaction was expected to proceed via a SN2 nucleophilic displacement of three chlorine atoms on hexachloropropene by acetamidine, the nucleophile. The proposed driving force for this transformation is the lone pair of electrons on the amidine nitrogen along with the electron withdrawing ability of three chlorines on hexachloropropene which induces a partial positive charge on the carbon. It is proposed that the chlorine atoms …

Synthesis Of Highly-Strained Gem-Difluoro Compounds By Reaction Of Difluoromethylene With Cycloalkenes, Deyi Yang May 1989

Synthesis Of Highly-Strained Gem-Difluoro Compounds By Reaction Of Difluoromethylene With Cycloalkenes, Deyi Yang

Theses

Trans-Cyclooctene is thought to be more reactive than cis-cyclooctene due to its trans-structure. When cis or trans-clooctene reacts with difluormethylene (:CF2), trans-9,9-difluorobicyclo[ 6,1,0] nonane was generated in much higher yield than cis-9,9-difluorobicyclo[6,1,0]nonane. [PhCF3P+CF2Br]Br- was chosen to be the difluoromethylene precursor in this study. The reason was that the reaction condition for trans-cyclooctene and :CF2 should be at low temperature. Only [PhCF3P+CF2Br]Br- could generate CF2 at lower temperature (e.g. room temperature). We succeeded in the synthesis of trans-9,9-difluorobicyclo[6,1,0]nonane and its cis isomer and …
