Optimizing Blockchain Based Smart Grid Auctions: A Green Revolution, Muneeb Ul Hassan, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Jinjun Chen

Preprints

Integrating blockchain with energy trading is a new paradigm for researchers working in the field of smart grid. In energy trading, auction theory plays an important role to ensure truthfulness, rationality, and to balance utility of participants. However, traditional energy auctions cannot directly be integrated in blockchain based auctions due to the decentralized nature. Therefore, researches are being carried out to propose more efficient decentralized auctions for energy trading. Despite of all these advances, a greater standpoint that is not well-highlighted or discussed in majority of proposed mechanisms is the integration of green aspect in these auctions. Since, blockchain is …

Cognitive Radio Spectrum Sensing And Prediction Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Syed Qaisar Jalil, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Stephan Chalup

Preprints

In this paper, we propose to use deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for the task of cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) in a cognitive radio network. We selected a recently proposed offline DRL method called conservative Q-learning (CQL) due to its ability to learn complex data distributions efficiently. The task of CSS is performed as follows. Each secondary user (SU) performs local sensing and using CQL algorithm, determines the presence of licensed user for current and k-1 future timeslots. These results are forwarded to the fusion centre where another CQL algorithm is operating that generates a global decision for the current and …

Qosa-Icn: An Information-Centric Approach To Qos In Vehicular Environments, Jessica Mccarthy, Saqib Rasool Chaudhry, Perumal Kuppuudaiyar, Radhika Loomba, Siobhan Clarke

Department of Computer Science Publications

Heterogeneous content-based traffic distribution motivates Information-Centric Networking (ICN), where content delivery is of primary interest as a prominent solution. However, current work does not address Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning for prioritized traffic, which is required for different applications and content types. This paper extends ICN with data delivery deadline awareness and shapes the forwarding decisions to ensure prioritized packet treatment. The proposed QoS Aware-ICN (QoSA-ICN) classifies requests' priority with their QoS requirements by codifying a QoSInfo object in interest/data packets. QoSA-ICN also extends the existing NDN transmission mode to a converged best route with multi-hop multi-route forwarding, to avoid …

Dpnct: A Differential Private Noise Cancellation Scheme For Load Monitoring And Billing For Smart Meters, Khadija Hafeez, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Donna Oshea

Preprints

Reporting granular energy usage data from smart meters to power grid enables effective power distribution by smart grid. Demand Response (DR) mechanism incentivize users towards efficient use of energy. However, consumer’s energy consumption pattern can reveal personal and sensitive information regarding their lifestyle. Therefore, to ensure users privacy, differentially distributed noise is added to the original data. This technique comes with a trade off between privacy of the consumer versus utility of the data in terms of providing services like billing, Demand Response schemes, and Load Monitoring. In this paper, we propose a technique - Differential Privacy with Noise Cancellation …

Parking Recommender System Privacy Preservation Through Anonymization And Differential Privacy, Yasir Saleem Shaikh, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Noel Crespi, Roberto Minerva

Publications

Recent advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT) have enabled the development of smart parking systems that use services of third-party parking recommender system to provide recommendations of personalized parking spot to users based on their past experience. However, the indiscriminate sharing of users’ data with an untrusted (or semitrusted) parking recommender system may breach the privacy because users’ behavior and mobility patterns could be inferred by analyzing their past history. Therefore, in this article, we present two solutions that preserve privacy of users in parking recommender systems while analyzing the past parking history using k-anonymity (anonymization) and differential privacy …

Department of Computer Science Publications

In real world applications, data sets are often comprised of multiple views, which provide consensus and complementary information to each other. Embedding learning is an effective strategy for nearest neighbour search and dimensionality reduction in large data sets. This paper attempts to learn a unified probability distribution of the points across different views and generates a unified embedding in a low-dimensional space to optimally preserve neighbourhood identity. Probability distributions generated for each point for each view are combined by conflation method to create a single unified distribution. The goal is to approximate this unified distribution as much as possible when …

Effective Capacity In Wireless Networks: A Comprehensive Survey, Muhammad Amjad, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Leila Musavian

Publications

Low latency applications, such as multimedia communications, autonomous vehicles, and Tactile Internet are the emerging applications for next-generation wireless networks, such as 5th generation (5G) mobile networks. Existing physical layer channel models, however, do not explicitly consider quality of service (QoS) aware related parameters under specific delay constraints. To investigate the performance of low-latency applications in future networks, a new mathematical framework is needed. Effective capacity (EC), which is a link-layer channel model with QoS-awareness, can be used to investigate the performance of wireless networks under certain statistical delay constraints. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on existing …

NIMBUS Articles

Correct and efficient initialization of wireless sensor networks can be challenging in the face of many uncertainties present in ad hoc wireless networks. In this paper we examine an implementation for the formation of a cluster-tree topology in a network which operates on top of the TSCH MAC operation mode of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, and investigate it using formal methods. We show how both the mCRL2 language and toolset help us in identifying scenarios where the implementation does not form a proper topology. More importantly, our analysis leads to the conclusion that the cluster-tree formation algorithm has a super …

We present an improved version of adaptive distributed cross-layer routing algorithm (ADCR) for hybrid wireless network with dedicated relay stations () in this paper. A mobile terminal (MT) may borrow radio resources that are available thousands mile away via secure multihop RNs, where RNs are placed at pre-engineered locations in the network. In rural places such as mountain areas, an MT may also communicate with the core network, when intermediate MTs act as relay node with mobility. To address cross-layer network layers routing issues, the cascaded ADCR establishes routing paths across MTs, RNs, and cellular base stations (BSs) and provides …
