Previous studies have linked biogeophysical signatures to the presence of iron minerals resulting from distinct biophysicochemical processes. Utilizing geophysical methods as a proxy of such biophysicochemical processes requires an understanding of the geophysical signature of the different iron minerals. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the complex conductivity and magnetic susceptibility signatures of five iron minerals disseminated in saturated porous media under variable iron mineral content and grain size. Both pyrite and magnetite show high quadrature and inphase conductivities compared to hematite, goethite, and siderite, whereas magnetite was the highly magnetic mineral dominating the magnetic susceptibility measurements. New synthesis routes were employed for the synthesis of three derivatives of iron hydroxo-, fluoro-, and mixed hydroxo-fluoro phosphates LiFePO 4(OH)xF1-x where 0 ? x ? 1 with the tavorite structure type, and their detail electrochemical activities have been presented. The hydrothermal synthesis of the pure hydroxo-derivative, LiFePO4OH, using phosphorous acid as a source of phosphate yielded good quality crystals from which the crystal structure was solved for the first time using SC-XRD (single crystal X-ray diffraction). Disimilatory iron-reducing bacteria play an important role in the reduction of Fe(hydr)oxides and the production of secondary solid-iron mineral phases that can have magnetic properties. Magnetic susceptibility can therefore play an important role in identifying zones where microbial-mediated iron reduction is occurring. We investigated the magnetic susceptibility variations in a hydrocarbon-contaminated aquifer where methanogenesis and iron reduction are the main biogeochemical processes. We investigated magnetic susceptibility (MS) variations in hydrocarbon contaminated sediments. Our objective was to determine if MS can be used as an intrinsic bioremediation indicator due to the activity of iron-reducing bacteria. A contaminated and an uncontaminated core were retrieved from a site contaminated with crude oil near Bemidji, Minnesota and subsampled for MS measurements. The contaminated core revealed enriched MS zones within the hydrocarbon smear zone, which is related to iron-reduction coupled to oxidation of hydrocarbon compounds and the vadose zone, which is coincident with a zone of methane depletion suggesting aerobic or anaerobic oxidation of methane is coupled …

The magnetic, electronic, and Mössbauer spectral properties of Fe 2L(µ-OAc)2ClO4, 1, where L is the dianion of the tetraimino-diphenolate macrocyclic ligand, H2L, indicate that 1 is a class III mixed valence iron(II/III) complex with an electron that is fully delocalized between two crystallographically inequivalent iron sites to yield a [Fe2]V cationic configuration with a St 9/2 ground state. Fits of the dc magnetic susceptibility between 2 and 300K and of the isofield variable-temperature magnetization of 1 yield an isotropic magnetic exchange parameter, J, of -32(2) cm-1 for an …

Using high-throughput instrumentation to screen conditions, the reaction between FeCl2 and H3BTT·2HCl (BTT3- = 1,3,5-benzenetristetrazolate) in a mixture of DMF and DMSO was found to afford Fe3[(Fe4Cl)3(BTT)8] 2·22DMF·32DMSO·11H2O. This compound adopts a porous three-dimensional framework structure consisting of square [Fe4Cl]7+ units linked via triangular BTT3- bridging ligands to give an anionic 3,8-net. Mössbauer spectroscopy carried out on a DMF-solvated version of the material indicated the framework to contain high-spin Fe2+ with a distribution of local environments and confirmed the presence …

A high resolution soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic study of Ga and as 3d core levels has been conducted for Fe/GaAs (001) as a function of Fe thickness. This work has provided unambiguous evidence of substrate disrupting chemical reactions induced by the Fe overlayer—a quantitative analysis of the acquired spectra indicates significantly differing behavior of Ga and as during Fe growth, and our observations have been compared with existing theoretical models. Our results demonstrate that the outdiffusing Ga and as remain largely confined to the interface region, forming a thin intermixed layer. Whereas at low coverages Fe has little influence on …

The interdependence between geoelectrical signatures at underground petroleum plumes and the structures of subsurface microbial communities was investigated. For sediments contaminated with light non-aqueous-phase liquids, anomalous high conductivity values have been observed. Vertical changes in the geoelectrical properties of the sediments were concomitant with significant changes in the microbial community structures as determined by the construction and evaluation of 16S rRNA gene libraries. DNA sequencing of clones from four 16S rRNA gene libraries from different depths of a contaminated field site and two libraries from an uncontaminated background site revealed spatial heterogeneity in the microbial community structures. The iron-57 Mössbauer spectra of the GdCo4-xFexB compounds, where x is 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 1, 2, 2.5, and 2.6, have been measured at room temperature and reveal relatively small iron hyperfine fields of approximately 12-18 T, relatively large quadrupole interactions of approximately +0.9 and -1 mm/s, and three very different types of spectra for x=0.10 and 0.15, x=0.25, 1, and 2, and x=2.5 and 2.6. The differences result from both the different easy magnetization directions in these compounds and the different cobalt and/or iron occupancies of the crystallographic 2c and 6i sites. Fe and Fe3O4 nanowires have been synthesized by thermal decomposition of Fe(CO)5, followed by heat treatments. The Fe wires are formed through the aggregation of nanoparticles generated by decomposition of Fe(CO)5. A core-shell structure with an iron oxide shell and Fe core is observed for the as-prepared Fe wires. Annealing in air leads to the formation of Fe2O3/Fe3O4 wires, which after heat treatment in a N2/alcohol atmosphere form Fe3O4 wires with a sharp Verwey [Nature (London) 144, 327 (1939)] transition at 125 K. The europium partial vibrational density of states (DOS) in EuFe4Sb12 and the iron partial vibrational DOS in both EuFe4Sb12 and Ce57Fe4Sb12 have been obtained by nuclear inelastic scattering. The results reveal the strong independence of the iron and rare-earth vibrational modes. The cage filling europium only participates significantly to the low-energy local vibrational modes. The force constants have been obtained from the measured probability of nuclear absorption. The energies of the peaks in the europium and iron DOS are in excellent agreement with the calculated DOS in LaFe4 …

The magnetic phase transitions in the FeMnP1-xAsx compounds with x= 0.25, 0.35, 0.45, 0.50, and 0.55, have been studied by iron-57 Mössbauer spectroscopy. The ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spectra have been analyzed with a model that takes into account the random distribution of the P and As near-neighbor anions of a given iron site. This distribution is a binomial distribution of the contributions to the spectra of each iron with n As near neighbors. Au-coated Fe nanoparticles have been prepared by using a reverse micelle method through reduction of an aqueous solution. Characterizations have been carried out over time to probe the oxidation of Fe. Immediately after synthesis, the samples exhibit metallic conduction and a negative magnetoresistance, consistent with the presence of α-Fe. The temperature dependence of magnetization displays a maximum at a blocking temperature of around 150 K. After a period of 1 month, the samples exhibit insulating behavior, indicating the oxidation of the Fe core. Mössbauer spectroscopy indicates the presence of an α-Fe component and a broad distribution of local environments.

A series of NdDyFe(17-y-x)CoxSiy solid solutions with = 2 and 3 and = 0.5 1.0 and 1.5 were prepared by induction melting stoichiometric amounts of high-purity elements. The postannealed samples consist of two phases belonging to the space groups R3 m and P63 mmc . The lattice parameters and the unit cell volumes were calculated from the refinements of the magnetic and structural unit cells using the FULLPROF version of the Rietveld program. Nanopowdered alloys of Pd100-xFex, with x=4, 6, 8, and 12, have been prepared by ultrasound assisted electrochemistry. The composition of the individual particles, as determined by x-ray fluorescence, and the bulk composition, as determined by atomic absorption, are in agreement within experimental error. Transmission electron microscopy indicates that the nanopowders consist of agglomerates of small grains with a radius of approximately 5 nm, a radius which is confirmed by the broadening of the reflections in the x-ray powder diffraction patterns. X-ray fluorescence analysis of individual grains indicates a homogeneous distribution of palladium and iron throughout the …

The Mössbauer spectra of Ho2Fe17 and Ho2Fe17D3.8 have been measured between 4.2 and 295 K and analyzed with a model which takes into account both the disordered nonstoichiometric hexagonal Th2Ni17-like structure and the basal orientation of the iron magnetic moments. The isomer shifts of the five crystallographically inequivalent iron sites in both Ho2Fe17 and Ho2Fe17D3.8 follow the sequence of Wigner-Seitz cell volumes and their temperature dependence follows the typical second-order Doppler shift. The cerium LIII-edge x-ray absorption near-edge spectra of the CexFe4-yCoySb12 compounds have been obtained at 295 K and unambiguously indicate that cerium is in the 4f1 electronic ground state for all values of 0.22≤x≤0.98 and 0.0≤y≤3.5. This stable trivalent state of cerium is in agreement with the proposed (CeFe4Sb12) 1-α(Co4Sb12)α, solid solution structure, in which the cerium atoms are always surrounded by twelve antimony first neighbors and six iron second neighbors, the observed magnetic properties of CeFe4Sb12 and …

The temperature dependence of the isomer shift of α-iron between 4.2 and 990 K and of Dy3Fe5O12 between 4.2 and 550 K has been analyzed in terms of the Debye model for the second-order Doppler shift, a model in which an additional parameter, the effective vibrating mass, is included. This mass is found equal to 57 g/mol in the ionic compound, Dy3Fe5O12, and equal to 60 g/mol in metallic α-iron. The deviation of this mass from 57 g/mol is a measure of the covalency of the metallic bonding in …
