K-Theory Of Quadratic Modules: A Study Of Roy's Elementary Orthogonal Group., A. A. Ambily Dr. Dec 2014

K-Theory Of Quadratic Modules: A Study Of Roy's Elementary Orthogonal Group., A. A. Ambily Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis discusses the K-theory of quadratic modules by studying Roys elementary orthogonal group of the quadratic space Q1H(P) over a commutative ring A. We estab- lish a set of commutator relations among the elementary generators of Roys elementary orthogonal group and use this to prove Quillens local-global principle for this elementary group. We also obtain a result on extendability of quadratic modules. We establish nor- mality of the elementary orthogonal group under certain conditions and prove stability results for the Ki group of this orthogonal group. We also prove that Roys elementary orthogonal group and Petrovs odd hyperbolic unitary …

Bures Distance For Completely Positive Maps And Cp-H-Extendable Maps Between Hilbert C*- Modules., Sumesh K Dr. Nov 2014

Bures Distance For Completely Positive Maps And Cp-H-Extendable Maps Between Hilbert C*- Modules., Sumesh K Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Completely positive (CP-) maps are special kinds of positivity preserving maps on C ∗ -algebras. W.F. Stinespring [Sti55] obtained a structure theorem for CP-maps showing that they are closely connected with ∗-homomorphisms. W. Arveson and other operator algebraists quickly realized the importance of these maps. Presently the role of the theory of CP-maps in our understanding of C ∗ -algebras and von Neumann algebras is well recognised. It has been argued by physicists that CPmaps are physically more meaningful than just positive maps due to their stability under ampliations. From quantum probabilistic point of view CP-maps are quantum analogues of …

Proximinality Properties Of Subspaces And Intersection Properties Of Balls In Banach Spaces., Jayanarayanan C. R. Dr. Sep 2014

Proximinality Properties Of Subspaces And Intersection Properties Of Balls In Banach Spaces., Jayanarayanan C. R. Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this chapter, we explain the background and the main theme of this thesis and provide a chapter-wise summary of its principal results. We introduce some notations and preliminaries that will be used in the subsequent chapters.Study of proximinality related properties and ball intersection related properties of Banach spaces have been an active area of research in the field of geometry of Banach spaces. In this thesis, we mainly study these two classes of Banach space theoretic properties. We consider only Banach spaces over the real field R and all subspaces we consider are assumed to be closed.1.1 PreliminariesFor a Banach …

Skilled-Unskilled Wage Inequality: Economic Theory And Policy., Priya Brata Dutta Dr. Aug 2014

Skilled-Unskilled Wage Inequality: Economic Theory And Policy., Priya Brata Dutta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Globalization and Skilled-unskilled wage inequality Globalization is the process of integration various economies of the world without creating any hindrances in the free flow of goods and services, technology, capital and even labour of human capital. The term, globalization has, therefore, following parameters: (i) Reduction of trade barriers to permit free flow of goods and services among nation-states; (ii) Creation of environment in which free flow of capital can take place among nation states; (iii) Creation of environment, permitting free flow of technology; and (iv) Last, but not least, from the point of view of developing countries, creation of environment …

Modelling Stock Returns In 'Volatility-In-Mean' Framework Under Up And Down Market Movements, Srikanta Kundu Dr. Jul 2014

Modelling Stock Returns In 'Volatility-In-Mean' Framework Under Up And Down Market Movements, Srikanta Kundu Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The first chapter of this thesis begins with a brief review of the existing literature on empirical studies on stock returns, especially those in the context of the relationship between risk and return, at both univariate and multivariate levels. In the next section, studies on the relationship between stock return and monetary policy are reviewed. The motivation of this work is discussed in Section 1.4. Finally, the format of the thesis is given in Section 1.5.A Brief Review of the Literature on Risk-Return Relationship-Both Univariate and Multivariate Cases. In this section, we first present a brief review of this literature …

Agriculture Trade And Protectionism., Debasmita Basu Dr. Jul 2014

Agriculture Trade And Protectionism., Debasmita Basu Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Ever since the inception of the World Trade Organization free trade in agricultural goods has been difficult to implement. The developed countries, who are otherwise active proponents of free trade, seem reluctant to remove the subsidies from the agricultural sector, making way for unfair competition against the poor developing nations. The Common Agricultural Program (CAP) spending of around ¿58 bn each year in the European countries as agricultural subsidy has always been subject to controversy. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has also devised a variety of programs to supplement the farmers’ income, support commodity market price and manage supply. The …

Coverage And Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks., Mrinal Nandi Dr. Feb 2014

Coverage And Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks., Mrinal Nandi Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which are two or three dimensional systems, usually consist of a large number of small sensors equipped with some processing circuit, and a wireless transceiver. The sensors have small size, low battery capacity, non-renewable power supply, small processing power, limited buffer capacity and low-power radio. They may measure distance, direction, speed, humidity, wind speed, soil makeup, temperature, chemicals, light, and various other parameters. The sensors are autonomous devices with integrated sensing, processing, and communication capabilities. In this thesis, we consider ‘coverage problem’ and ‘detection problem’ in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in grid as well as in …
