Spectral Properties Of Large Dimensional Random Circulant Type Matrices., Koushik Saha Dr. Sep 2011

Spectral Properties Of Large Dimensional Random Circulant Type Matrices., Koushik Saha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Consider a sequence of matrices whose dimension increases to infinity. Suppose the entries of this sequence of matrices are random. These matrices with increasing dimension are called large dimensional random matrices (LDRM).Practices of random matrices, more precisely the properties of their eigenvalues, has emerged first from data analysis (beginning with Wishart (1928) [132]) and then from statistical models for heavy nuclei atoms (beginning with Wigner (1955) [130]). To insist on its physical applications, a mathematical theory of the spectrum of the random matrices began to emerge with the work of E. P. Wigner, F. J. Dyson, M. L. Mehta, C. …

Simplicial Bredon-Illman Cohomology With Local Coefficients., Debashis Sen Dr. Sep 2011

Simplicial Bredon-Illman Cohomology With Local Coefficients., Debashis Sen Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The notion of cohomology with local coefficients for topological spaces arose with the work of Steenrod [Ste43, Ste99], in connection with the problem of extending sections of a fibration. This cohomology is built on the notion of fundamental groupoid of the space and can be described by the invariant cochain subcomplex of the cochain complex of the universal cover under the action of the fundamental group of the space. This later description is due to Eilenberg [Eil47]. Cohomology with local coefficients finds applications in many other situations. We focus on one such application of this cohomology which is due to S. …

Ball Remotality In Banach Spaces And Related Topics, Tanmoy Paul Dr. Jul 2011

Ball Remotality In Banach Spaces And Related Topics, Tanmoy Paul Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this work we aim to study Ball Remotality and densely Ball Remotality of subspaces in Banach spaces. We study this property in many classical spaces of type c0, c,\\â„“p and C(K) where K is a compact Hausdorff space. The said problem also discussed for Banach spaces when considered as a subspace in its bidual. It is observed M-ideals in C(K) are densely ball remotal. It is shown that a particular type of M-ideal in A(K) where K is a Choquet simplex is densely ball remotal.

Distributed Algorithms For Initialization And Topology Control In Wireless Ad Hoc Networks., Subhasis Bhattacharjee Dr. Jul 2011

Distributed Algorithms For Initialization And Topology Control In Wireless Ad Hoc Networks., Subhasis Bhattacharjee Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Wireless ad hoc networking is an upcoming communication technology that makes exchange of information possible without any pre-existing infrastructure. Over the last decade it has grabbed tremendous interest in the research community due to its easy deployability and high flexibility, with numerous applications to social, industrial and personal uses. In this thesis, we designed effcient light weight distributed algorithms based on minimal local information to resolve the problems related to the initialization and topology configuration of wireless ad hoc networks with special emphasis on optimal utilization of limited resources. Once the ad hoc nodes with in-built radio transceivers are deployed …

Income Inequality And Spatial Distribution : Firm Location, Product Quality And Welfare Of Poor., Namrata Gulati Dr. Jun 2011

Income Inequality And Spatial Distribution : Firm Location, Product Quality And Welfare Of Poor., Namrata Gulati Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The key idea explored in this thesis is the following: though being poor in itself is a huge disadvantage, the situation might be influenced considerably by the type of neighbourhood the poor lives in as private establishments like educational institutions, health care facilities or credit institutions take both the location and income mix of people into account while making strategic decisions like whether to enter into the neighbourhood at all, and, upon entry, what price and quality to choose for their products and services. Is staying with the rich a virtue for the poor or a source of resentment? Are …

Geometric Invariants For A Class Of Semi-Fredholm Hilbert Modules., Shibananda Biswas Dr. May 2011

Geometric Invariants For A Class Of Semi-Fredholm Hilbert Modules., Shibananda Biswas Dr.

Doctoral Theses

One of the basic problem in the study of a Hilbert module H over the ring of polynomials C[z] := C[z1, . . . , zm] is to find unitary invariants (cf. [15,7]) for H. It is not always possible to find invariants that are complete and yet easy to compute. There are very few instances where a set of complete invariants have been identified. Examples are Hilbert modules over continuous functions (spectral theory of normal operator), contractive modules over the disc algebra (model theory for contractive operator) and Hilbert modules in the class Bn for a bounded domain C …

Public Policy, Long Run Growth And Economic Transition From Agriculture To Industrial Mass Production., Rudrani Bhattacharya Dr. Apr 2011

Public Policy, Long Run Growth And Economic Transition From Agriculture To Industrial Mass Production., Rudrani Bhattacharya Dr.

Doctoral Theses

It has been recognized that the heart of the development process lies on the transformation of an economy from traditional activities in agriculture to industrial activities. As emphasized by Lewis (1954), the movement of labor from primary sector to industry is conducive to the rise of economy’s savings and investment rate and thus fostering economic growth. The core of this paradigm is the historically observed rapid growth in today’s developed countries associated with expansion of industrial activities. It is well-documented by now that at least over a few centuries leading up to 1800 AD there was little change in the world …

Wealth Inequality And Economic Performances., Sahana Roy Chowdhury Dr. Mar 2011

Wealth Inequality And Economic Performances., Sahana Roy Chowdhury Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Ever since the inception of Development Economics as a separate discipline inequality has been a major area of extensive study. Economists and researchers have deliberated both on the causes and the effects of inequality in a wide range of treatise, books and essays. So far, in this regard, two fundamental approaches came across viz., the Classical approach and the Credit Market Imperfection approach. The Classical approach was originated by Smith (1937) and was further interpreted and developed by Keynes (1920), Lewis (1954), Kaldor (1957), and Bourguignon (1981). According to this approach, savings rate is an increasing function of wealth and …

Sampling 'Survey Populations': Some Problems And Their Solutions., Kajal Dihidar Dr. Feb 2011

Sampling 'Survey Populations': Some Problems And Their Solutions., Kajal Dihidar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis we study some problems in survey sampling and propose their solutions. The thesis is divided into seven chapters, the first being an introductory one. Chapters 2-4 relate to surveys with direct responses, while Chapters 5-7 deal with randomized responses. We begin by introducing the motivations behind the principal problems studied in this thesis. The first problem arose while developing a survey where the objective was to estimate the tot al number of workers in different industries in the rural unorganized sector in a district of the state of West Bengal, India. For this, the technique of adaptive sampling …

Quantum Stochastic Flows: Trotter Product Formula, Dilations And Quantum Brownian Motion., Biswarup Das Dr. Feb 2011

Quantum Stochastic Flows: Trotter Product Formula, Dilations And Quantum Brownian Motion., Biswarup Das Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Motivated by the major role played by probabilistic models in many areas of science, several quantum (i.e. non-commutative) generalizations of classical probability have been attempted by a number of mathematicians. The pioneering works of K.R. Parthasarathy, L. Accardi, R.L. Hudson, P.A. Meyer and others led to the development of one such non-commutative model called ‘quantum probability’ which has a very rich theory of quantum stochastic calculus a la Hudson and Parthasarathy. Within the framework of quantum stochastic calculus, the ‘grand design’ that engages us is the canonical construction and study of ∗-homomorphic flows (jt)t≥0 on a given C ∗ or …

Selected Aspects Of Performance Of Indian Industries: An Empirical Investigation., Anup Kumar Bhandari Dr. Feb 2011

Selected Aspects Of Performance Of Indian Industries: An Empirical Investigation., Anup Kumar Bhandari Dr.

Doctoral Theses

At the time of India’s independence the need of the hour was to develop the economy at a fast pace so as to achieve a reasonable standard of living for the masses within a short period of time. India’s first Industrial Policy Resolution was adopted in 1948 which put emphasis on the expansion of production of both agricultural and industrial goods to satisfy the basic needs of the masses, a large proportion of whom lived well below a subsistence level of living. Hence, emphasis was given on agricultural expansion in the First Five Year Plan and on building up the …
