The Investigation Of Photocatalytic And Adsorptive Properties Of Humic Acid Grafted Magnetite Nanoparticles For The Remediation Of Arsenic, Selenium And Phosphorous From Water, Mohammad Mamunur Rashid Jun 2018

The Investigation Of Photocatalytic And Adsorptive Properties Of Humic Acid Grafted Magnetite Nanoparticles For The Remediation Of Arsenic, Selenium And Phosphorous From Water, Mohammad Mamunur Rashid

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The crisis of freshwater has been a big concern worldwide. Water contamination that occurs through the discharge of toxic pollutants from different natural and anthropogenic sources have worsened the situation. Adsorption has emerged as a simple and economical water treatment procedure although the challenge is to find the right adsorbent that can efficiently remove the target contaminant followed by their easy recovery from the reaction vessel. In this dissertation, I have focused on the synthesis, characterizations and applications of environmentally compatible and magnetic humic acid coated magnetite nanoparticles (HA-MNP) as a potential adsorbent for water purification.

Phosphate is an essential …

Exposure To Estrogenic Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals And Brain Health, Mark Preciados May 2018

Exposure To Estrogenic Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals And Brain Health, Mark Preciados

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The overall objective of this dissertation was to examine exposures to the estrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals (EEDCs), phthalates, bisphenol-A (BPA), and the metalloestrogens cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and manganese (Mn) in an older geriatric aged-population and examine associations with brain health. Given the evidence that EEDCs affect brain health and play a role in the development of cognitive dysfunction and neurodegenerative disease, and the constant environmental exposure through foods and everyday products has led this to becoming a great public health concern. Using a bioinformatic approach to find nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1) gene targets involved in mitochondrial dysfunction, that …

Speciation, Metabolism, Toxicity, And Protein-Binding Of Different Arsenic Species In Human Cells, Szabina A. Stice Mar 2014

Speciation, Metabolism, Toxicity, And Protein-Binding Of Different Arsenic Species In Human Cells, Szabina A. Stice

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite of its known toxicity and potential to cause cancer, arsenic has been proven to be a very important tool for the treatment of various refractory neoplasms. One of the promising arsenic-containing chemotherapeutic agents in clinical trials is Darinaparsin (dimethylarsinous glutathione, DMAIII(GS)). In order to understand its toxicity and therapeutic efficacy, the metabolism of Darinaparsin in human cancer cells was evaluated. With the aim of detecting all potential intermediates and final products of the biotransformation of Darinaparsin and other arsenicals, an analytical method employing high performance liquid chromatography inductively coupled mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) was developed. This method was …

The Effect Of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles On The Fate And Transformation Of Arsenic In Aquatic Environments, Dionne Dickson Mar 2013

The Effect Of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles On The Fate And Transformation Of Arsenic In Aquatic Environments, Dionne Dickson

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Iron oxides and arsenic are prevalent in the environment. With the increase interest in the use of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) for contaminant remediation and the high toxicity of arsenic, it is crucial that we evaluate the interactions between IONPs and arsenic. The goal was to understand the environmental behavior of IONPs in regards to their particle size, aggregation and stability, and to determine how this behavior influences IONPs-arsenic interactions.

A variety of dispersion techniques were investigated to disperse bare commercial IONPs. Vortex was able to disperse commercial hematite nanoparticles into unstable dispersions with particles in the micrometer size range …
